Again, I'll take Cave Story as an example, sure, you can release the game for free after developing it for free, but even with no advertising it doesn't mean it won't get you anywhere. Cave Story was remade an almost absurd amount of times, and all those of those remakes became commercial copies that you had to buy, giving Pixel some revenue. I know what I'm talking about, that's why I'm running my mouth off.
Cave Story isn't the be and end all of independent game development; just because one person made a high quality game in their spare time doesn't mean other people can or should.
If you're gonna tell me that a simple sprite swap for a gender, archievements, or a new game+ require around $10,000 each I really don't think you'll be able to keep a straight face while saying it.
Developing features takes time, and time costs money.

Can, sure. Should, I don't think so. I'll agree 5-years is too much developing time for such a game, and unless it's a one-man project, it's not something anyone should keep as a guideline.
Back on topic, I do hate retro graphics when they are not used properly. Everyone with a basic knowledge of NES layers knows that this is not feasable on the real thing:

People, if you're gonna limit your graphics based on hardware limitations of older consoles, at least try to be completely true to the source.
Great, it's another newgrounds flash with a lot of jokes relating to homosexuality and making fun of people we don't like. Repeating the same thing other people did on a flash video is different from repeating the same thing other people did on video games... right??
Super Meat Boy, The binding of Isaac, FTL, Sword of the Stars: The Pit, etc.) are awesome fucking games. This video was somewhat true on certain aspects but these guys just sound like ignorant fucks. I know its comedy but its the condescending type.
I can't tell if this guy's serious or just maximum trolling
We are adhering to the NES color palette, but adding many modern touches
They're not limiting themselves to the NES hardware, just using its color palette.
Finally someone here replies to me politely and logically. I can definitely see the reasoning behind the original goal, even though I still think the rewards for stretch goals are really small, considering how big of a gap there is in-between all of them. But thanks for not replying with a bullshit question/answer, regardless.
No problem friendo

Indie usually means that it isn't really funded or controlled by anyone except the developers (and crowdfunding). Sony just published it on their store. It would be like saying FTL, Hotline Miami, and others aren't "indie" because they are posted on the steam store.
journey was essentially paid for by sony. you should learn about how games are funded

hi
this is from an interview with Peter Bartholow, Lab Zero Games CEO, on why it costed $150k in crowdfunding to add a single character to their game Skullgirls
Trying to raise at least $150,000 was picked for a very specific reason: it was the money Lab Zero Games needed. Often, crowdfunding projects will ask for roughly half of what it actually needs to complete what it’s really promising. There is a psychological effect to crowdfunding, and people want to back a winner. A winner is likely to exceed its funding goal, and get closer to its real goal. The Skullgirls developers actually broke down development costs, hoping to persuade people this was reality:
$48,000: Staff Salaries - 8 people for 10 weeks
$30,000: Animation and Clean-up Contracting
$4,000: Voice recording
$2,000: Hit-box Contracting
$5,000: Audio Implementation Contracting
$20,000: QA Testing
$10,000: 1st Party Certification
$10,500: IndieGoGo and Payment Processing Fees
$20,500: Manufacturing and Shipping Physical Rewards
“We’ve always tried to be really transparent,” said Bartholow. “ [...] We’ve always taken a kind of Game Dev 101 approach to all of this. People don’t know anything about game development, and the people that you think might know something, know shockingly little.”
So yeah it's really not outlandish to ask for a fraction of that money on what can be considered a fraction of that content. The gender swap or achievements might not be worth that, but the New Game Plus has to be rebalanced and some content needs to be added, and I'd say it's definitely worth $10k
