Yeah, I don't know about that being half the size of a black widow, much more like twice the size of one. Where I live we have ridiculous amounts of black widows everywhere, and the biggest ones I really ever see are about 1 to 1 and a half inches long. They sure are annoying as hell at night though, god forbid you accidentally step into a bush chances are you're gonna have one on your leg.
The diagonal shape are common to this species as they are considered "Ladder spiders" due to this zig zag shape, I used to play with these spiders as a child. Not too smart but never got bit, They can grow to massive sizes though i've found one in the wetlands around my area that one with its legs fully extedned was the size of my palm, and i have pretty big hands.
