Lots of other countries has so why can't yours?
LGBT rights still remains that one barrier that developed nations still haven't overcome. It should be no surprise it's frowned upon in Qatar as well.
Who the fuck are you to tell me my culture is ignorant you bigot? Slavery is NOT legal, we outsource construction workers who are payed on salary. Slavery is a sin in Islam, so even if we were the all out woman oppressing nation you seem to love trying to prove; slavery would not be legal. I don't give a shit what you google up, I was born and raised here and I know for a fact slavery is illegal.
Your culture opresses people based on their views, sexuality and nationality. If that's not ignorant i don't know what is. Your ridicolous sponsorship laws are a fucking disgrace. Please civilize the fuck up. oh, and "I WAS BORN THERE" isn't a nice way to back up your arguments. Try stating some sources instead, for all we know you could be lying your ass off.
Qatar doesn't look bad at all. I'd go there.
LGBT rights aren't followed in Australia either, this place is probably more homophobic than the Vatican, you get labbelled and shoved around for telling jocks to shut up when they go on. Unfortunatly for the ringleaders, they got caught giving blowjobs by the others in their group.

It's that Qatar is more tolerant on it than most other countries there.
I don't get Facepunch. They hate a small, safe, Arab country. But go fucking in love with Wikileaks and their potentially war causing stuff.
The views on sexuality and nationality are nothing new in many middle eastern countries. It's that Qatar is more tolerant on it than most other countries there.
Yeah, but it still has a long way to go

How is this part of the discussion related to world cup 2022 by the way?

Archie, did you ever consider that the country may improve after the influence of the world cup?
OK. How is this part of the discussion related to world cup 2022 by the way?
I don't think any country with such unacceptable laws should host anything
We had the damn olympics in China. That place has a way worse track record on everything than Qatar. I didn't see that many protests on that.

I'm just going to pretend that wasn't a part of your post. Kafeel - workers permit. Think like a green card, only a person has to sponsor you so they deem if you're actually working or doing something you shouldn't be doing. It's a way to avoid illegal immigration into the country. Some sponsors will lie to their clients and find loopholes in the regulation to their advantage. The employees are still payed on a monthly salary, and the sponsors who fuck these (primarily construction workers) people over are being tracked down. It's an issue Qatar is dealing with in its development. A wikipedia article about how that's been compared to slavery really isn't helping your point about how I should come up with some sources, by the way. Don't get me wrong, we're far from 100% there. But to say we're alike any of the extremist countries in the Middle East that have somehow shaped up the worlds view on Arabs is an insult.

dont care what you say, Russia and (and to a lesser extent, Qatar) were not the best choices for the world cup actually i dont mind the Qatar bid its just the Russian one
Were you living under a rock back then?
Somewhat. But look how that turned out. Fine...
at least the hosting in Qatar will attempt to breath life into arab football just like the last world cup did for africa
I don't think any country with such unacceptable laws should host anything
Why, is any part of the law relevant to you?
Qatar will probably be rid of those laws within a generation or two anyways.

The sponsorhip system is a system that can easily be abused. No common worker should be given that kind of power as it'll easily go to your head.
Why, is any part of the law relevant to you?
They came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for me and by that time no one was left to speak up. I believe that opression should be fought wherever it can be fought.

What makes me angry, op, is that you don't realize the actual implications of any of those discriminatory laws. It's nothing that I think should prevent Qatar from hosting the World Cup, but as a citizen of the country you should take a more realistic viewpoint. Having laws that discriminate against minority groups is saying from the government level that those groups of people are inferior in some way. The laws may be inactive, as you said, but that doesn't mean they aren't actively okaying prejudice against other groups of people. It sickens me that you can say those laws are fine just because nobody really gets jailed for them anymore. Your arguments are valid, but get a fucking perspective.

Over time we're moving farther and farther away from a whole Islamic State perspective and more to a globally friendly one. My point is that from my personal experiences with gay people, with non-qataris, with women: they're all treated equally. 'Sodomy' is a crime if they catch you doing it, and they won't catch you doing it if you're not fucking anywhere that isn't private property. It's a badly worded way of preventing sex in public. This is just as punishable between two straight people. Sure theres the conservatives who are against it, but really? Westboro Baptist Church, need I say more? I'd say gay people here are in pretty good hands. Anywhere you go, everywhere you go; you'll have your assholes. These laws were put into place decades ago and since then have been ignored if not long forgotten.
As a Qatari local, I can explain this to you. Public displays of affection, be it between two men, two women, or two members of the opposite sex is frowned upon. It's just respecting the culture, homosexuality is not 'illegal' per se; but so long as you aren't having anal sex out by the stadiums for the world to see you have absolutely nothing to worry about. If you'd think about it it's really hard to outlaw homosexuality, given it's not a choice. Seriously, think about it a little bit - or better yet read the thread!

Sodomy between consenting adults in Qatar is illegal, and subject to a sentence of up to five years in prison.
Sounds like a fantastic forward-thinking progressive country completely different to the rest of the middle east and a fine country to set an example to the world by hosting a huge international sporting event

It's also unrelated to the subject of that Qatar hosts the world cup in 2022
Sounds like a fantastic forward-thinking progressive country completely different to the rest of the middle east and a fine country to set an example to the world by hosting a huge international sporting event
Jesus Christ man, read the fucking thread!
Discussing about it and saying it's a shit country because of the laws is certainly not a good way. And it is very much relevant, I believe a country with such laws shouldn't host the world cup.
As an expat that lived in Qatar for 15 years, I can adamantly say that while the country isn't the best, it does have it's good qualities. Personally, I don't find the place very appealing because A) I lived there for 15 years, B) It's boring as fuck, C) There's not really much to do. The country is only about 15% Qatari residents (estimate) and the rest is all expatriates, be they migrant workers come to the Middle East to provide for their families or British/American/Whatever coming to work for oil companies. A small minority of the actual Qatari people are decent upstanding people, while the rest are pretty terrible examples of the Qatari population. Now that I'm out of the place, I do honestly miss it quite often. I go back to visit pretty regularly because I still have friends there and my dad works at a local bank, and I'm quite glad I got to grow up there rather than the Ivory Coast. Which could have been a possibility if my dad didn't think it was such a shit hole. TL;DR, Qatar is a p. okay place [editline]4th December 2010[/editline] and jesus christ they don't oppress anybody, it is a ISLAMIC country hence they will follow ISLAMIC beliefs, and homosexuality is FORBIDDEN in islam. They just deport the homosex if they're being pda'ing a-holes about it.
