I like your flag.
So sex in public isn't cool. Not a surprise; it's illegal under indecency laws pretty much everywhere. But what about two men making out? Western society, while some people'll be uncomfortable, it's still accepted. But what about Qatar?
Yeah that's not tolerated, but two straight people making out is just as unacceptable; it's not just a certain sexuality its just they feel really strong about intimacy being private here.

I was born and raised here.
Isn't Moscow the same as Qatar? Rich arse in one place, and across the street, homeless people in another spot.
Not a single person on the street. It sounds far-fetched and cocky but I'm telling you, not one homeless person.
You do realize the World Cup is in 2022? Qatar will be 137% over FIFAs requirement to host a world cup, at the moment they're only somewhere like 78%
My point still stands. Even though the World Cup isn't until 2022, there is no assurance that they will meet requirements in time. I congratulate FIFA for having requirements, but what's the point if having them if you award the cup to a country that only has a 78% at the time of its bid?
And about the sodomy thing, don't say "oh just buttfuck in private" because that isn't an argument. Will you get away with it? Probably. Are you breaking the law by doing so? Yes. And that's retarded.

You're right, FIFA took a gamble when it came to Qatar. But it was the Middle East's first chance at hosting the world cup, whereas the rest of the bidders have all hosted it in the past. Plans and the 20 billion dollar investment already put into place shows we'll be more than ready.
It was a stupid law put in decades ago that we found to be of no use and isn't even enforced on the grounds that you CAN'T enforce it. I'm pretty sure the law has been revoked by now.
I don't mean to offend any Americans on here, but if your government is 9 trillion dollars in debt do you really think spending billions of dollars preparing for a tournament for a sport that most Americans don't even watch is the best idea?
From what I understand, Qatar looks down significantly on immigrants and non-nationals to the point that they are literally second class citizens and do not receive the benefits of natural born citizens.
I'm not sure what to think of them, and the article didn't really tell me anything I didn't know about modern Muslim nations.
He already clarified that countless times in the thread, I doubt he'd want to do it again for the illiterate.
Don't be an arsehole.
Regardless, it proves my point. Not only is such a attitude bizarre under any circumstance, but another indicator of why Qatar is unsuitable to host the FIFA World Cup. I'm predicting major clashes between locals and foreigners.

There is that sense of elitism among a few of the nationals, definitely. Immigrants aren't looked down on though, they make up 75% of the population after all.
I quote an opinion piece I recently saw:
"What will happen to the Brazilian beauty dancing in the street? She'll be arrested or severely sunburnt."
Nice to know you base your decision heavily on the fact that a Brazilian girl will be sunburned if she's dancing "in the middle of the street". (She won’t be arrested)
This was a great post. I had barely even heard of Qatar, and now it seems like a really progressive place. I'm eager to see the middle east get it's shit together, so this seems to be a good thing.

Have you ever seen a public event like this? People are going to want to go outside, buddy.
Guess she'll just have to deal with the disapproving looks of men and the hushed, startled whispers of the women, then. What a friendly atmosphere!

Yeah, because one Brazilian woman is going to go support her team in the name of the millions of fans at home. Your logic makes no sense, the population is almost going to double at the time of the World Cup; there'll be as many people appreciating her dancing as anywhere else.
I'm really surprised the Qatari government doesn't tax its people. Maybe I'm ignorant, but I've never heard of a nation like that before
Very VERY informative thread. When I'm older and have enough money for travelling, I'll definitely pay a visit to Qatar.
I'm really surprised the Qatari government doesn't tax its people. Maybe I'm ignorant, but I've never heard of a nation like that before
It's nothing common, I doubt it's going to last until 2022 but right now we have enough money to go around so tax is unnecessary.

I checked your criminal code, the law still stands.
I've also said "Qatarian" up until this point, not realizing it actually is "Qatari". I'll stop doing that

I'm guessing its one of those laws no one really pays attention to, take this collection for example: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/129589/50_states_50_ridiculous_laws.html

arent qatarians aliens on mass effect?
Here are my 2 cents, being a mad football fan.
Qatar have never even qualified to play in the World Cup. - There should be a rule that you at least need to qualify for a single world cup to be eligible to host one. (They are ranked 113th in the world by FIFA. U.S.A and Australia are both low-mid 20's)
In saying that, Qatar's only experience of hosting a major event was the 2006 Asian Games, that's it! USA, Japan and South Korea, have hosted a combined 12 summer and winter Olympic Games between them and Australia hosted 'the most succesful olympic games ever' and the only Rugby World Cup to turn a profit.
Also the temperatures there are usually in the high 40's to low 50's (Celcius) - I play club football in 30 degrees celcius and that alone is horrible enough. I couldn't imagine an extra 20 degrees. I know they are putting massive air conditioning systems in but have you been inside on a hot day when the air conditioner malfunctions? It's like being in a parked car with the windows up, and that's at 30 degrees C.
You can only buy alcohol from one single shop with a special permit, not to mention that you need another permit just to enter that shop. - This normally wouldn't matter but at the worlds largest sporting event, there will be more trouble relating to this alcohol ban then FIFA have considered.
The thing that really gets me though, are the stadiums. In three of Qatar's nominated host cities, the population is so small they could not even fill the 45,000-seat stadiums to be built there. They have 3 built stadiums that meet FIFA standards (barely, and need refitting) now they have to go out and build NINE more, costing a total of $40 billion. They will also be spending about $100 billion on infrastructure.
Below is a picture from my local newspaper.

The lowest population is an eye raiser... the residents of Ul-Shamal will be outnumbered 3-1 when they host a game.
FIFA clearly made this decision to maximise it's television revenue. There is no other logical answer for it other than financial gain.
Given dumbs by people who clearly know nothing about the sport.

Who cares if they never made it or qualified into the World Cup, that’s not what matters. What matters if they’re able to fulfill the hosting requirements which they either have, or will overkill on by 2022. Population is small? Are you saying that’s bad? No, not at all. For starters, less chance of the inevitable traffic/transportation jams. This,
Have you ever seen a public event like this? People are going to want to go outside, buddy.

As for the weather, right, so you’re assuming that the climate-controlled stadium will by chance, just malfunction during the World Cup? Now you’re just looking for excuses and grasping at straws.
As for the alcohol, I already posted it:
-----
They already decided.
(World Cup - Qatar 2022 green lights Israel, booze)
Hassan Abdulla Al Thawadi, chief executive of the Qatar 2022 bid, added that the Muslim state would also permit alcohol consumption during the world's most watched sporting event.
Because they’re going to keep the current ones right?

i don't get why everybody is so up in chaos about this, it seems like a decent country, not some fucking backwards shithole like everybody makes arabic countries out to be

It wasn't until 2008 that non-muslim religions were allowed to congregate

the traffic is terrible there as is. They've been trying to improve but to no avail, really. It takes me an hour after 5 pm to get home from somewhere 10 minutes away with no traffic

Dude this one time I saw them giving a copy of Grand Theft Auto to a kid no older than 10, fucking awesome laws we have up in there
and yet they will censor the kiss between shrek and fiona in movie theatres

Traffics actually gone better since they opened up a whole bunch of highways and bridges, and they're working on the metro stations in the coming few years.
The kisses censoring is just funny, they stopped doing that when they realized how stupid it made them look.

Ah, hopefully they'll revamp it all by 2022. I wouldn't be suprised if they have current projects in development, I also read recently something about Metro stations being developed.
2020 is also when they'll finish the worlds longest causeway (Bahrain to Qatar)?
