No I think you'd have to get the "doctors" of the day to take a look at it. Then the barber would operate on it.

If I was a viking I'd die in battle or of the flu before STDs would become a serious issue.

Actually I believe we are better off with just about every scientific field except medicine.
Now before you rate be boxes, I am focusing on drugs and diseases. Not surgical procedures, anatomy, or the study of the human bodies. With current drugs we can fight off just about every disease known to man. Everything from the sniffles to some forms of cancer. But, at the same time, diseases do not go away just because you create a vaccine. Instead they adapt and mutate into a new much more deadly strain which in turn causes more deaths.
Certain diseases, (like the influenza) are key examples of this. Instead of people dealing with the disease and being sick for a few days on bed rest, they are taking the faster and easier way out by taking medication. This is what causes it to adapt so that it can spread in different ways, or have much more aggressive symptoms. As a result instead of the more basic strains of the flew which left you in bed for a day or two with a glass of your favorite orange juice, new strains developed which lasted weeks with more severe symptoms. Then as you keep popping pills you again recover faster only for it to mutate from a low threat pain in the ass to a life threatening disease. This cycle keeps going until you have "swine flu", "bird flu", and large epidemics of diseases immune to all current vaccines killing thousands.
Mind you this excludes certain diseases like Polio, but you get the point. AIDS and SARS are a result of this. Some believe this is also how most STDs were formed.

We would not have modern medicine without all the other scientific fields.

So apparently you believe that we should continue the rate at which the drug industry is being developed. Causing a never ending cycle of cures and mutation until the human race is eventually extinguished.
You sir, are the idiot.

So because there are still diseases we have not figured out how to cure the whole field of medicine is moot?
With medicine we have stopped fatal diseases or stopped them from being fatal such as the plague, polio, measles, small pox, some forms of cancer, influenza, the list just goes on.
The ultimate irony is that the people who disparage medicine would be dead without it.

The best part about actually knowing something about pharmacology, biology et al is knowing you can create a solution to resistant microbials.

Post above you answers your question. Death is inevitable, but the rates at which diseases spread and adapt is increasing. Yes some diseases have stopped in their tracks but many are not. We are inadvertently creating super diseases capable of destroying life on a global scale.

Logical inevitability and conspiracy are completely different.

Ok, so what you are saying is that instead of stopping things we know can kill us, just ignore it because there is a small chance that it gets stronger that we need to stop it again.
Lets also stop making bulletproof material since there will just be more powerful bullets.
Lets stop making more powerful internet security since there will be someone who can outdo it.
Lets stop making better forensics because there will be someone who can outsmart it.
Well, I like that I don't have to take 4 hours to walk 32 Miles, and instead can drive there in almost 15-20 minutes. I also enjoy having lights so that I can read at anytime of day, and also a variety of news channels on my television, so that I'm not coloured by one opinion, not to mention entertainment channels and video games. Space travel has also made us better off. Without it, say goodbye to your computer systems, that help you stay alive when you've had a stroke or heart attack.

Oh boy are the researchers gonna be red faced when they find this out.

Actually I am saying, stopping cure research on small diseases like the common cold and diseases that can kill you but only on a small scale (unless people are idiots) like AIDS we can at least lessen the rate at which diseases are changing. It is to late for us to completely stop what we are doing since these super diseases already exist and would inevitably destroy the human race as we know it.
