Basically it was an old comic by [del]Tim Buckley[/del] Bum Tickley (control alt delete), somehow he thought it would be a good idea to make a four panel comic about a main character having a miscarriage, and he called it "Loss". It's kind of an infamous thing and those sequences of lines are supposed to represent the characters as they appeared in the strip because for some time it's been a running joke to slip/edit it into just about everything here.

So do they actually explain why the human torch is black or did they just try to hide the obvious part where the actor was just friends with the director by not addressing the issue at all

Not that it'd make the movie any better if they did explain it though. I wonder if that one shot of the tank getting flung into a rock and just disappearing got changed in the final product.
