I didn't know this thread existed. I've had something like 3 ushankas for about 4 years now, a Ukranian one and 2 Chinese PLA-style ones. The Chinese ones are the warmest, softest, most amazing hats I've ever worn.

I don't think they make you look silly, the only difference between an ushanka and a traditional winter flap hat that we wear around here is that the ushanka is more square-ish in shape or more furry.

Ushankas look a little silly and can make you look like a tasteless nerd in the wrong context but I love mine for when it gets really cold and my ears hurt when I go outside
