I've got a surplus Gp-5 and Pilotka but I've always wanted to own a Ushanka aswell.
Why are people so stupid they call other people wearing these freaks/weaboos/hips ? People wear ushanka for the same reason why 90% of the planet wears jeans. It fulfills its function (keep your head warm) and it's nice.
Bought the red star ushanka. I don't like the long ass delivery time that much (December 27th - January 11th) but... meh. Quality. And it's sexy.
I just hope it gets here before the Chicago meetup

Go for it, you get the badge you see on the front, and two smaller stars that almost look like cuff links (they aren't, i just used that as an example).
Took like 3 1/2 weeks to get it though, when i got it, it was wrapped in brown butcher's paper secured by twine.
The seller also shipped a ruble with it too, neat little surprise.

I ordered mine and it gave me a long time frame like that, and i got it at the last day of the estimate. I live in Philadelphia, this is coming from russia to you in Illinois i assume.
I had a nice ushanka but then my friend got one and he wears his a lot so I don't wanna wear mine anymore otherwise it will look like we're in some sort of ushanka club.

They are both utilitarian and good looking, they aren't fagdoras. (The short rimmed pieces of shit, that is. Traditional long-rim fedoras are awesome)

I have a Ukranian-made ushank and the equivalent that the Chinese army uses.
I was wearing one while working at a church community outreach program, like an outdoor soup kitchen where we hand out canned foods, clothes, etc. About 2 hours in, a frail old woman is in line and comes to my station. "Ooh, ushanka!" she said int he thickest accent I've heard. "Very warm hat."
I didn't get much time to talk to her because the line was moving, but she said that she was from Poland, spoke 7 languages, and had danced with Stalin when he was 50 years old. I doubt that any of it was true, but my the stories she could tell. I'd love to meet with her one day and just listen to what she has to say.

For me, when it comes to efficiency vs. looks, efficiency comes first. Up here in the Great White North it can get pretty fucking cold especially when there's wind. A ushanka can protect your face from the wind and since it's heavily insulated it can keep you warm in essentially an arctic climate. Looks are just a bonus for a ushanka in my opinion, I'd buy one even if it looked like crap, as long as it kept me warm.

Where i live, those trapper variants of the ushanka are really stylish right now.
I think because that expensive clothing store American Eagle sells them now for like 50$ a piece.
