Proof of ownership (IE: Receipt)is the same thing as having your name on it. It signifies that you own the object. In this case, neither a name on the object nor a receipt is present. The OP, in essence, owns the objects until somebody proves otherwise. Though "the law" may not say that explicitly, it's implied.

Ok, so how would one go about discovering if the item in question had a receipt or not? It's impossible unless you look/ask around.
In an earlier post you claimed if it was on public property with no identification it's free to take, or are you rebuking that post?
The point is, you can never know without asking, simply looking once, and coming back 3 hours later does not make the property mysteriously lose all ownership.

If that doesn't work, he should sell them. It's not the OP's job to have to track down the fuckhead owner who couldn't be bothered to keep track of his expensive merchandise. You may think that the alternative of leaving it out to rust is a lot better, but in the real world, laws don't apply rationally to most situations like these. The OP may be a thief if he sells them before checking, but the person who purchased it is evidentally very stupid or incredibly careless, and the situation is the consequence for their actions.
