Ian Curtis was a good singer. His style was quite unique and influenced many musicians
And it fit the music very well. If he sung like Freddie Mercury, then the band probably wouldn't be as influential as it is today.

Exactly. Ian had a very deep and emotional voice which suited the dark and gloomy music
I never found Joy Division to be depressive. At all.

In their earlier stuff, like very early, he actually sung in a way more punkier way.

Well I can agree somewhat. Most of their songs are pretty upbeat and catchy if you ignore the lyrics.
I never found Joy Division to be depressive. At all.
Then you're neither looking at the music in context nor searching for the deeper meanings in the lyrics. Through Joy Division's two albums (and singles), the lyrics almost represented the path of destruction for the singer - a deep look inside the mind of someone who is ready to end it all. Joy Division's lyrics were pure emotion and poetry, and the atmospheric sound only added to all this.
If you don't pay attention to the lyrics and you don't know the story of Ian Curtis, then the music won't seem very sad or depressive at all. On the surface the music seems harmless, but underneath lies pure poetry and art enshrouded in a cloud of dark emotions.
Just look at the regrets the surviving band members have. They never paid attention to Ian's lyrics when he was alive, and when they finally paid attention to them after his death they realized that his suicide should not have been so unexpected. Maybe if they didn't ignore the lyrics they could have helped Ian.

In what way?
[editline]07:26PM[/editline]
Sorry for analyzing music that actually has deeper meanings
God, you are SO pretentious.
I've come to realize most Opeth fans are like that. I have no idea why though.
But I'm going offtopic.
My favorite Joy Division song is definetly Dead Souls. One of their only songs I've found to be a bit depressive.

Love will tear us apart is one of the best songs ever.
Just bumping this thread to say that Closer is one of the best albums ever made.

I prefer Unknown Pleasures to be honest, but they're both brilliant.
Closer has their matured and perfected sound though.
Bump

Even though Hooky is a douche, I really don't want to miss this. Has anyone here gone to any of the previous shows?

You're not so different from them, all you ever do is bitch about everything.
Bumping this. My mom got me Joy Division's 'Best Of' album for my birthday, along with Control. I'm liking the music but I have yet to see the movie.
[editline]12:34AM[/editline]
Are they from Manchester?
Yeah
The Kill is a criminally underrated song by them.

Good stuff, I've been listening to them ever since I was like 5. 18 now and still listening to them. I think that Day of the Lords, Shadowplay, and Disorder are their best songs.
