I don't believe it.
So yesterday I get the call from Costco saying if I'm still looking for work so now I'm working there starting on the 18th. It's seasonal but the fuck do I care now. It's job security with a level of pay I have no idea of other than it will be at least thirty cents mroe than waht my last wage was.
Then today I get a letter from the government of canada. Even though I was technically fired from my last job they still honored my application and accepted my EI request and started the ball rolling by dumping $800 (four weeks worth of backpay) into my account and with assurance that if I didn't get a job I had 29 more $200 cheques coming my way with one per week.
Uh, I really didn't expect all this to happen so quickly. First I get the job, then I get the money to haul my ass out of asking my parents for cash. I'm actually a little scared but well I guess the threat is over now for the immediate future. Now jsut to tell the GC offce that even though they spent a month processing my paperwork, I don't need EI right now after all.
so ask for a pay decrease. if it's anything like America, they'll be happy to pay you less.
Either find work involving mowing laws and shit, have a trade INCASE you lose a job.
Whacking weeds, walking dogs, or anything else, but I prefer mowing lawns with a range of 10-20$ a lawn, it works.
You always have your parents who can back you up if you can't support yourself anymore, as long as you have them, you're fine.

That's awesome mate. Now you pretend that you're still unemployed and get money from your parents and the government anyway. :v:

it may reduce your amount of posts to zero but it will make facepunch better
Get drafted.
If you are on your last resort, try to get a nice job in the Navy.
As long as you get a high score on those ASVAB's, you could be on your way to Navy's Nuclear Power School.
Even if you had to live in your parents basement for a bit, you could still get information on the test, and learn what you need to learn to be on your way to one of the more sophisticated jobs in the military.
You are basically sacrificing at least six years of your life. It opens many new opportunities, though. More than if you were to get a job in some company.
Right.
I really wanted to get into this. As if being socially excluded from my surroundings was not harmful enough.
Anyways, back on August 15 while I was halfway through my two weeks planned vacation I was called into the office by my boss. He said that because of poor sales he would be closing down the online sales division which I ran (and was the manager of, even though it paid me minimum wage) and he was letting me go.
I immediately applied for Employment Insurance and had all that necessary filed paperwork completed in several days, I printed off a stack of resumes and got hold of my record of employment. At home I stopped all luxury spending and stopped work on my shop. It meant that even after living in the house for four months I was going to have to wait even longer to unpack. I also took the $1000 cash I had stored in my safe and deposited it all. It looks like I will not be returning to Japan again.
Now here I am a month and a half and 28 (reapplications not included but would add another 15 to that number) written and electronically submitted job applications later and I'm still nowhere near landing a job short of a costco seasonal position which would be a disaster as it would leave me off right when school ended and the market is flooded with shits looking for a job. Even with saving money, My bank balance is $622 dollars. That will pay one more month's rent ($433) plus all bills ($70). It will not however pay my car insurance ($200) so I'll have to get a loan from my parents, who I already owe $700.
I ahve applied at all the major stores (wal-mart, staples, Best Buy and various major canadian supermarkets) and all of the joe job places (gas stations and fast food) and to date have received one callback and that was Costco offering me seasonal for five hours a day, five days a week.
I also searched through our local Craigslist for permanent full time jobs as well as I searched through the Canadian Job Bank. The number problem I was finding was that there were jobs I wanted to do but because I didn't have three years experience. certification in x and y, or a diploma in course Z I was not eligable. Criagslist also yielded my second (and only other) callback and interview and that one failed with the guy saying "We like you. You seem to know what you are doing...but the guy who used to be doing this before he was deported seemed to be a bit more experienced and we think you aren't good enough to replace him".
So here I am in a state where I'm rationing food and gas and with enough money left to survive in Vancouver for one mor month. Once the bills for November are paid and if I don't have a job, It's game over and I'll have to pack up and move everything back to my parents place four hours away in the mountains. Of course that ssumes I don't snap first.
At the same time, me breaking the lease on the apartment means my two other roommates will also lose the place and they won't be happy about moving either and I really don't want to go home knowing I fucked over two other people in the process.
I'm out of ideas now and almost out of time. The recent job fairs were to be one of my last hopes but they were brickwalled by everyone wanting experience I simply do not have and can not get because I can not afford a post-secondary education.
Before I wave the white flag and spend the next god knows how many years in my parents basement I would at least like to fire a flare off and see if Facepunch can help.
Oh shit dude, you live in Vancouver? I live in Victoria. If I wasn't already living with 3 people in a 2-bedroom, I would offer you a place to stay (I would pick you up from the terminal :D)
If you decide to come to Victoria and need a ride or something, let me know man.
Best of luck, try applying for jobs in Victoria perhaps? Rent is a little cheaper here I believe.

hey
fuck you
I read it wrong, no need to be a cunt
Parent's home is always the best place until you get life back on track, they are here to help you.
Work at a fast food place. It's easy, and you'll get paid at least minimum wage. Plus (depending on your manager) you can get free food or drinks like me and you won't have to worry as much for paying for food since you can eat while on break at work and then bring something home for yourself afterwards. Do that until you can find a better paying job.
Parent's home is always the best place until you get life back on track, they are here to help you.
Unless your parents are like mine, once you're out, you're out. My father always told me, if I needed a place to sleep a few nights, the door is always open, but he said I will never be allowed to move back in, nor will my brother.
OP, I know I'm not going to get the most popularity from saying this, but instead of posting a thread, get a part time job. Sure, the pay is shit, the hours are shit, etc. But at least you'll be making SOME money. I made $200 a week working at Wendy's, so it's better than nothing.
Some money is better than no money.
Also, look into temp agencies. That's how my brother got his job, a printing company wanted some temps, they liked him, so they decided to hire him full-time with benefits and a 401k.
It's not that there are "no jobs", it's there are no jobs people want to do and look for. There are ALWAYS loads of part time jobs. What you can do, is work daylight part time at one place, then do a night shift at somewhere like Wal-Mart. Doing that should grant you a fairly manageable income.
As for food, shelter, etc.
You can get a shitty apartment for about $100 a month in rent, not including utilities. Coming from someone who has struggled a while, I can assure you that most of your money will go toward electricity, water, and sewage. The best way to stretch money out longer, is to completely ditch eating out, buying cigarettes, newspapers, etc.
Also, when buying food, do NOT eat loads of Ramen. It's cheap, tastes great, and fills you up, but the problem is the additives like Monosodium Glutamate that keep you hungry and make you crave more food, thus eating more. Farmers markets are the BEST way to get cheap fruit, vegetables, and potatoes. Potatoes are the miracle food of the broke. You can mash them, bake them, fry them, etc. Learn to appreciate potatoes. Also, stay away from frozen meals. Stock up on canned soups, etc.
Time for a personal story. For 2 years (I finally climbed out), I was living from paycheck to paycheck, sometimes skipping car insurance payments and walking to work to get by. It's rough, but at the end when you finally do catch a break, you can look back and feel proud of yourself for being able to rough it, and you appreciate things more, and are more conscious with your money. No, it's not your fault bad things happen, but you can manage to make the best of them. I've had times where I went a few weeks without power, I showered in cold water, etc.
I've been where you're at OP, and trust me, you'll be fine. You'll make it through this. The key thing is, never ask parents for money. While there is no shame in going to your parents to grab a meal, which I did a few times a week, never ask for money. It makes things weird. I worked a day job at my current grocery store, and I worked at Wal-Mart at night. Do what needs to be done. If it means sacrificing personal time, too bad, you need to get on your feet.
Is it something common that parents won't take their children back once they move out? because at least, in my family, we do whatever we can to help anyone of the family who's in need. Hell, We've given this cousin a bed in our place for almost a year now. I can't imagine having a son who's needing a place to stay and not letting him come back home.

That's pretty much the example of a bad parent
If you're going to make the decision to have a kid it's an obligation to make sure they have a good life. So if they lose their job and have nowhere else to go, if you don't let them back in you're a jackass. It's basically saying "I brought you into this world and that's your fault, deal with it"

I'm somewhere where houses cost 50 grand and the worst apartments are at least 350/month + utilities

My parents are not bad parents. In fact, they're some of the best parents someone can ask for.
Why should I burden my parents? I'm old enough now to make my own mistakes, and fix them. There is a point where responsibility needs to be taken by yourself, mommy and daddy aren't going to be around forever to fix your fuckups. A parents job is to raise the child to be the best person possible, and send them on their way.
You're a bird who obviously never left the nest.
I wish I could help mips. you seem like an extremely interesting person. if push comes to shove I got a little fruit cellar i am turning livable. still in the middle of buttfuck nowhere PA. but we got jobs here. and I'd let you stay free for the first few months....so long as you helped

Am I the idiot? Explain how so. Because it sounds to me like a few people here weren't taught how life really is. Face it, your parents are going to die one day, as will all of us. Then, where are you going to fall back to?
See, that's what kids are taught today. No matter how bad things get, mommy and daddy will always help you out. My parents told me they would never deny me a meal, and if I ever had any kind of thing like a house burned down, etc. I would have a temporary roof over my head. However, they did NOT say I could stay there just because I want to maintain my comfortable lifestyle, and not have a care in the world.
Responsibility is something a lot of people lack today. Call me an idiot, but at least I never had to burden my parents, and never asked them for money, shelter, etc. While I did eat a few meals there, it's mainly because of my mother. Anyone who has a caring mother, knows that mothers ALWAYS want you to eat something, regardless of whether you're hungry or not...and the fact that she cooks a mean ass pot roast makes it easier.
your parents had you they put the burden upon themselves.

I have to go in on Tuesday to discuss my EI with the government. I actually didn't really hear my employment terms so I don't have a clue what my pay will be or how many days a weel I'll be working.
If it's int he range of thre days with minimum wage it's possible I can work AND get paid by the government. That would be kind of cool.
Unfortunately the idea of getting a cheap and small apartment isn't really feasable for me unless I also rent out a storage locker. The reputation you get with having a pile of old shit is that you have a lot of old shit.
your parents had you they put the burden upon themselves.
While somewhat true, that doesn't mean that I have the right to keep burdening them when I have the ability to fend for myself.
Be a train driver. You just sit in there and push buttons and pull levers.
I don't know much about your situation, but most of the time I hear people whining about not getting a job, they may be filling tens of job applications, but not a single proper one.
Does your town have one of those "human resources providers", that rent workers to companies? They always have vacancy.

I know it sucks, but moving back home may be the best bet. No one wants to. Hell, i'm 25 and i had to move back home. It sucks, but until you can get on your feet, it's definitely not the worst thing.
I feel you about getting a job though.
I've been trying to get a job recently. I work in a kitchen, but kitchen jobs are just too sporadic with hours unless you're a manager. If it's busy i can easily put in 45 hours a week in 4 days no problem. But if it's a slow week i may get 20, I can't move out and try to pay 500 for rent, plus maybe 80 for utilities, not to mention 100 for gas, and then groceries when i'm not sure i will have 40 hours a week, every week. And only getting $9.25 doesn't help. It's not bad, but it's definitely not living on your own money.
Anyhow, keep your head up OP.
I tried applying for a ton of jobs, i've applied for various jobs in the city 3 times now, and i just now got an interview this Thursday, so hopefully it works out.
Good luck OP!
