I've been toying with the idea of learning an instrument for a few years. I'll probably save up and shell out the cash when I'm around 20 or so (another 2 or 3 years).
I keep flip-flopping between wanting to learn bass and (rhythm) guitar, though. And then I've had periods where I want to learn drums. Even though Rock Band (Shut up :smith:) and my own personal air-drumming has made it obvious to me that I can't do doublekick and arm-work at the same time. I can do them separately okay, though.
That being said, which would people suggest? Bass or (rhythm) guitar? Keep in mind my end goal is to try and form a band and actually write out and perform some of the many, many song ideas I've had over the years.
If you actually have song ideas I'd recommend bass

done it both on and off the kit :smugissar:
Do it. I started to play the trumpet, and fifth grade. I love it. There is no "Late" start, you just start. When I was in fifth grade, I was ten. I sucked compared to everyone else, but I still played. Just do it. I recommend trumpet.
There is never such a thing as late. Trust me I know, I just started getting into music my JUNIOR YEAR of highschool. I had never been good at anything and then I picked up a bass guitar and my band director got me playing tuba and BAM. I'm first seat tuba in wind ensemble, student director of jazz band, and symphonic band section leader. I'm looking into music ed or sound engineering for college as well. Its never too late, while it is easier to learn at a young age, trust me on this. DO IT. Try to learn all the instruments that interest you.
Thanks bros.
I've played piano and percussion (in middle school) before so I'm not afraid of practicing / hard work. I'm interested in becoming good at a few instruments so I can write better music. I love music a lot, I want it to be my life.
Depends on the intstrument.
The RECORDER flute thingy: Such a thing
Anything else, No such thing.
I started playing bass when I was almost 15 and that was almost a year or something over a year ago.
It seems like the day of yesterday when I started playing bass guitar, I could barely play Green Day songs when I started out and now I'm playing Symphony X and The Black Dahlia Murder songs
That is almost my bass playing history, well I suppose you do have to be mature to want to play bass.
It's never too late, but it would of been easier to train your ear if you started earlier.
What is starting late exactly? I did band from 4th grade to 8th grade. Played the bass clarinet. I really didn't have an interest in music and more just played because my brother played an instrument. Some people would count that as a good jumping off point, but I don't especially since I sucked (although apparently not nearly as much as the bass clarinetist who replaced me).
Picked up guitar roughly two years ago and I've been able to do all of what is on my sound cloud page in that time. It all comes down to practice of course, and people really delude themselves when they think they'll make major strides in a month.

David Gilmour just recently started playing the saxophone a couple years ago. And he's like sixty something years old!

theres no better feeling than when you accomplish what you thought was once impossible, and play a song you thought you could never have done.
good luck to you
I've played the Trumpet for 5 years, I love it : )
I play Tuba and Euphonium. Been playing for just under 2 years, Euphonium for like a month.
done it both on and off the kit :smugissar:
Yeah, but bet you can't do it with heart. :mmmsmug:

Smug overload :smug:
I wish I could drum but I can't because some of my leg muscles are too short or will never be flexible enough to do it without pain.

Use a drum machine, if you do it with heart then people's opinions don't matter.
This is going to my 5th year of playing drums, start now, before you die.
