The lack of a reward and the difficulty in killing them shows that they were probably benevolent or at least not allied with Derse, but Eridan's prejudices lead him to commit genocide against them, and no other troll would dare to go onto the Land of Wrath and Angels because of Eridan's ludicrous killing spree.

What I find interesting is that Hussie said that ascended trolls have wings because metamorphosis is a big part of their culture and beliefs, and trolls believe that ascension results in a fairy-like state, so wings are granted to those that do ascend. He said that humans have no such ideals about ascension, so they're limited to awesome powers and clothes. But aren't angels, by human standards, what would commonly be referred to as a higher state than mortal humans? It would probably vary from person to person based upon their own personal beliefs, as the human concept of higher states is complicated and not everybody shares the same view, or maybe Hussie just doesn't want to pull a Sepulchritude-esque power again and give everyone wings.
