I take offense that two panels of your avatar are from the smut you posted a couple days ago. :colbert:
They're 13 goddamn you.

I think you misinterpreted Eridan a bit. He's not exactly underdeveloped, he has similar and just as complex issues as Karkat or Equius, even if it hadn't been directly addressed in the story, which is quite unfortunate, I'd have loved to see more of him.
He's a failure. At least that's what he sees in himself, because high-ranked trolls are meant to cull the lesser. He's at a position where he could not only cull, but murder every single lowblood, simply by failing to provide a snack for Fef's lusus; yet he can't bring himself to do it. Only because of his friends and Feferi. He likes them, the chatlog you provided is a perfect example, but he can't admit it, not even to himself. That's why he pretends to be a genocidal maniac, trying to cover up those feelings. That's probably why Feferi is his moirail("hatched for each other"), as she does the exact opposite of Eridan. Instead of putting on a façade, she embraces her different views, she doesn't care abour blood, nor tradition.
He most likely snapped because he was left all alone as his friends slowly abandoned him. I thought it advanced his character pretty nicely.
Then again, I don't have much experience analysing characters, so excuse the crudely constructed text.
I've been in a bad mood all day because of the most recent developments.
It's not that I didn't think Kanaya should have died, it's that it was horribly, horribly executed. Most of it is due to Eridan being such an underdeveloped character, especially since Hussie apparently wants us to believe that he's a genocidal maniac. We're never shown him doing anything even remotely violent except for whaling and dueling with Sollux in MHP. We are told by the narration that he has a "GENOCIDE COMPLEX" which is never elaborated upon beyond making him vaguely racist towards the land trolls. We're just supposed to believe he wants to kill people without ever seeing him take any action that would indicate that desire. I mean, was I the only one who saw Eridan portrayed more as a hopeless romantic with a Napoleon complex rather than a cold-blooded murderer? There are even instances where his hatred is downplayed! Anyone remember this conversation?
Hello sympathy for the one guy Eridan arguably hates more than anyone else. If it wasn't for Eridan's complete lack of development, you could make the argument that what he's just done is completely out of character.
Besides that to just drop this kind of drama on the audience like it's a spoonful of gruel is just bad storytelling. No set-up, no suspense, just *splat* "here you go, feel sad." It breaks every kind of immersion the audience has in the story because it's an event prefabricated to cause drama in the audience, and it seems wholly artificial. It's like if Romeo and Juliet had ended when Juliet was randomly shanked by Prince Escalus, and the only reason given was "he doesn't like women".
What's even more infuriating is that the other three important murders (besides Feferi and Kanaya's) were almost flawlessly! Aradia killing Vriska brought to an end a cycle of revenge that was months in the making. Vriska indirectly causing the death of John played to her megalomaniacal tendencies as well as her indirect competition with Terezi, both of which have been properly developed. Vriska killing Tavros was a product of her lack of sympathy for him. He had failed to grow when faced with her challenges and she therefore lost respect for him as well as any romantic feelings she might have had. Above all, she has simply had enough time to be characterized as a cruel character.
Hussie's a great writer and I really admire his work, but this is a pretty fucking huge misstep in my opinion.
Eridan wanted to kill all land dwellers, he killed the consorts of his land, he is a huge failure and has been rejected by everybody.
He's snapped, tired of the bullshit, and wants to join with jack and just tear shit up.
Not out of character at all.
You can't say "Oh no hussie has ruined the story" before you even know whats going to happen next, stop bitching and have a little faith.
maannnn kanaya dying broke me! she was so nice... feferi wasnt a huge hit because there wasnt really much to her (still sucked so much though!) but kanaya had enough to her to make her dying really sad somehow... its sudden and you can kind of see it coming but it still hurts when it does!
I wonder what equius is going to do though... I can imagin him perspiring madly under eridans wand

This is five kinda of delicious. There better be trollface Eridan pics by the time I get back tonight or there'll be hell to pay.

Then again, I don't have much experience analysing characters, so I might be wrong, but this is my opinion on him.
The evidence does point toward Eridan relying on his friends, and when they abandon him he decides to take revenge himself. He's constantly wanted to upgrade his relationship with Feferi, but she cut off their previous relationship altogether. Not a single one of his friends would dare set foot on his planet, not even Nepeta, whose life Eridan had to save. He became jealous of Sollux after Feferi ventured around with him instead of Eridan, and challenged him to a duel. He lost, and returned to his planet to slaughter more angels.
The entire act of angel genocide itself could have been him thinking that his duty was to provide hope for his friends, so he took it upon himself to attack the most dangerous and strongest creatures the trolls had ever known to prove himself as a hero to his friends. None of them thought that what he was doing was for their benefit though, and they still treated him as a tool. He tried to install blackrom relations with Rose, but she didn't care and ended the relationship by blowing up his computer. Later he tried to inform Feferi, the only friend that he had known, about the only plan he could think of for survival, by joining up with Jack. Instead of praise or acknowledgment, he was attacked by Sollux again and Feferi cut off all ties with Eridan, completely renouncing whatever friendship might have remained.
He probably destroyed the matriorb out of jealously for Kanaya, who had a visible future and important role to play, along with friends to back her up. Since losing everything, he took out his rage on his former friends, the ones who don't care at all about what happens to him. Eridan's development was subtle, but there regardless.
Of course, the one guy with a ranged weapon is the one that loses it.

Very well said, I agree completely. The way I see Eridan is comparable to King Creon from Antigone, they're both quite tragic characters who lost every single person close to them. Needless to say, I'm intrigued by his story, can't wait to read more about him.
just to check with you guys who have way more thought out to this than I do... Wayward Vagabond is the one who killed all the dream trolls right?
just to check with you guys who have way more thought out to this than I do... Wayward Vagabond is the one who killed all the dream trolls right?
No, it was Jack
No, Bec Noir, who is the Kids' session's Jack Noir, but he turned into Bec Noir after he took Black Queen's ring and Bec prototyped himself with Jade's Kernelsprite.
No, it was Jack
uuuh.
In Wake, that guy has blood on his right hand. Like Wayward Vagabond did in his dream. And also no Bro glasses. Vriska appeared in WV's dream and convinced him to kill the dream trolls.

watch that again. That's definitely Wayward Vagabond, once he put on the ring or something.

and he has a stomach full of fuel for when after the green sun is blown up by rose to disable jack's power. fuel source will keep wayward vagabond powerful enough to kill him
I think my neck is going to snap
Are you serious or just trolling?
Bec Noir discarded Bro's glasses at some point after kicking his arse.

Bec Noir.
I believe the one in Wake had the scrap of Harlequin thing, Bec Noir specifically ripped his outfit up earlier in the story.
also in that screenie, jacks left handed

wake's 'jack' is right handed.
I think the writer would remember something like handedness if he was putting so much detail into this whole thing

Chronologically, after the trolls defeat the Black King and are about to claim their ultimate reward. Jack enters their session through the Scratch and terminates all of Aradia's doomed timeclones. He then travels to Prospit and blows it up, then does the same to Derse. While trying to kill Aradia though, he was timelocked for 4 hours and 13 minutes.
In the way that events unfold, however, he's still in the kids' session teleporting around, slaughtering everyone he can. We know of his future, but not what he does before entering.

Yes that sprite flip is from Intermission, though it happens very often.
And because Terezi gave the code for him at some point, then he discarded them after the disguise was used.
