I like how Gamzee's typing quirk was changed from alternating case every letter to every sentence instead. It really makes him seem a lot different.

It's genius, really. Together, the upper and lowercase make his lines difficult to read, and therefore slower in our minds, like a stoner. Separated, the uppercase denotes shouting and anger and the lowercase is psychopathic calmness.

Well, he's been just killing off trolls left and right for a while now. Tavros, Nepeta, and Dream-Feferi died in the recent flash, then Sollux got KO'd and real Feferi and Kanaya died. Aradia died and then Aradiabot blew up. Equius and some others have gone off to godknowswhere. Gamzee's gone nuts. Terezi's fine as far as we know but she's probably still freaking about about Tavros' speared corpse landing right next to her.
Things are not really looking up for Karkat at this point.

Well, someone said earlier they also look like scratches from Karkat's sickles, so it could go either way really.

Calling it now, Andrew is going to troll us all and not update for a few days, so we'll all think "FLASH, YIPPEE :swoon:", but then he will post an image with the caption, "Minutes in the future, but not many..." with Karkat's dead body splattered all over the floor.

I gave them all troll handles well before they ever came close to being real characters, but those names always set up the parameters for where I could drive the characters thematically when continuing to develop them, if inclined. So yeah, this was always a strong possibility, without necessarily being 100% committed to it the whole time. Regardless, there was some groundwork set up for that possibility should I decide to run with it, which I did, and the decision was made quite some time ago.
Same with others we've seen recently. Kanaya had the theme of virginity due to her sign, which when you think about it, is a pretty TOUGH CONCEPT to shape into coherence for a character in an ensemble like this, but I worked it by bonding her to matriarchal themes with her virgin mother grub lusus, and the role she inherited as progenitor and caretaker of the matriorb, and more specifically, recently showing the futility of that role, as the concept of chastity is not particularly compatible with successful breeding. [highlight]When she found the key to release it, it was a sign that all along it was not meant to be used, but destroyed.[/highlight]
Eridan was originally cast as someone dangerous and genocidal, but those qualities were never illustrated and became easily dismissed as a joke as his whole character seemed to revolve around failed romantic aspirations for so long. But they came back, reminding us they were driving forces behind his profile. (His name, caligulasAquarium, was also tied to his various romantic obsessions, particularly the need for a rival, which is bound to the caliginous quadrant, another word for dark.) Ultimately his dreams of genocide were realized by being the one to destroy the orb, which appeared to always be his intent for "helping her" with it, making his preceding conversation with Kanaya much more detestably villainous than it seemed. In doing so, he destroyed hope for the species. This is his final interpretation of his role as the Prince of Hope. Not as one who fights for hope, but destroys it. He's certainly the worst kind of bastard this story has to offer.
Both Eridan's and Gamzee's dangerous sides were heavily masked by the long adherence to their roles as one note gag characters, and made it very difficult to predict these outcomes seriously. A few days ago, nobody at all is guessing Eridan walks into a room and kills two characters. And before this page:

I knew that most of the trolls were going to die, since Sgrub annihilates the host planet and caused Feferi's lusus to release the Vast Glub, which killed every troll not ingame already. Then at the end of their session, they were denied entry into their reward universe and were drifting on a meteor, waiting for the unstoppable, enraged force to find them and finish them off. This doomed them, but Kanaya finding the key to the captchalogue card containing the Matriorb was proving to be an interesting development and i wanted to see how far she could take it. Now three of the surviving trolls ended up becoming murderous, and Kanaya was supposed to destroy the Matriorb because of her theme of virginity, not plant it and cultivate it.
That's the part that surprises me: Kanaya had the wrong idea of what her role was meant to do, but Eridan knew, and she flipped the fuck out when it was realized and she ended up dead because of it.
I have to start my Gamzee drawing from scratch again because every time I try to finish his goofy expression I can only think about "i am going to motherfuckin kill all you motherfuckers."
