Unfortunately, the matriorb is required for the re-population of the troll race; the cloning equipment is only meant to be a small boost. This was mentioned in one of the Jade-Kanaya conversations if I recall correctly. So the remaining trolls are most likely the last of their kind.

God damn THIS. I don't know why people are so surprised. It's been hinted, stated and told hundreds of time that the trolls are a violent race. They are haunted with dreams of carnage without sopor slime, they have a whole romance based on two people hating and beating the shit out of eachother, they have virtual videogames where you, again, beat the shit out of each other. They are culled constantly if they do not reproduce, and a whole bunch of other shit.
With tension rising, trolls running out of sopor slime, and their already established violent nature, it wasn't that hard to see this would all happen.
I'm liking it, imho, it makes it really exciting.

We've got to remember that the trolls were never meant to be the main characters of the story anyway, so it's not quite so surprising that they're going to start dying off.
I wonder how strong Gamzee is. All the trolls are said to be at the pinnacles of their echeladders, but the ones that are dead so far were killed by a troll that vastly overpowers them. Tavros wasn't nimble enough to avoid Vriska's counterattack, Feferi was taken by surprise by Eridan, who had a weapon more powerful than his previous legendary one, and Kanaya did the exact same thing that got Feferi killed, by charging with a melee weapon at a guy who has a long-range attack. Karkat's an able fighter, with three known powerful weapons at his disposal, while Gamzee really didn't fight much and is never shown to have alchemized anything stronger than his regular juggling pins.
So if Gamzee's really going to go on a rampage, then he's going have to be completely ruthless and use all options to kill the other remaining trolls. Terezi's also good at fighting and has powerful weapons, Nepeta has been hunting and fighting her entire life, Equius is the physically strongest troll, Aradia ascended to the god-tiers, Sollux has a strong long-range attack plus psychokinesis, Vriska ascended and is a serial killer, and Eridan isn't taking shit from anyone anymore and has one of the strongest weapons available.

But she never regretted killing her victims, only regarding them as weak. It's why Aradia sent the ghosts of the trolls she had killed to haunt her: to teach her empathy. Eridan teamed up with Vriska during FLARP sessions to obtain food for Gl'bgolyb, and he only hunted lususes, not trolls. Tavros killing Grandpa Harley was an accident and he regretted doing it; he thought that he was protecting Jade and stopping an intruder. Vriska held no such regret for the trolls whose lives she took so she could feed her lusus, and felt no pity toward Tavros when she presented him with an impossible situation and crippled him for trying to quit because there was nothing else he could do.

Hussie said that psionic powers are more probable to manifest in lower-blooded trolls than the upper-castes, and Vriska couldn't directly control Terezi because of this. All the lower-blooded trolls we've seen have some sort of psionic power: Tavros can commune with beasts, Sollux has psychokinesis and Vision Twofold, allowing him to hear the voices of the dead, and Aradia has powerful psychokinesis and can't be directly controlled by Vriska. Karkat's blood is mutant, so that probably disrupted his chances for psychic powers.
Aside from that, Eridan is untouachable with that wand...except fighting Jacquerel, obvious - Which he isn't going to do...unless befriending Jack is to get a secret attack on him, but then killing the fellow trolls makes no sense if they can't be brought back.

Hussie said that Eridan's final interpretation of his role as the Prince of Hope is not to create it, but to destroy it. It's why he destroyed the Matriorb; to remove Kanaya's hope of their species repopulating itself. He's a villain now.

What give you the idea that Eridan is untouchable. Vriska and Aradia are god tier and from what we know Eridan isn't, He probably wouldn't stand a chance. He killed two okay-ish fighters when they were enraged and not thinking tactically, they ran straight for him and he was easily able to just spear them seeing as he had a ranged weapon which is a real advantage. He isn't unstoppable he just had the upper hand.
