When I first saw this I absolutely hated it. It felt nothing like the show did, and I still hate it even today. The second and third movies feel more like what the show was trying to accomplish, and I liked those immensely more.
I got Electabuzz and Mew cards, but I can't find them and I absolutely hate Electabuzz. I wish I could find that Mew card though.
I got the holographic Mew, and I have the original score, and the VHS.
I just YouTube'd Mewtwo Returns and all I have to say is.. wow..
Compared to what I'm used to in a Pokémon related thing, it was incredibly more mature and had subject matter like racism and shit.
Not to mention it was far better than expected and I think I like it much more than I do Pokémon The First Movie and Pokémon 2000.
i like how the subtitle of the movie is "mewtwo strikes back" even though its the first time mewtwo has shown up in the cartoons
Oh god, nostalgia. I made my whole family go so I could get multiple mew cards.
Remember these?

He strikes back at humanity in the events that occur with Ash and the gang. Why he does it is shown at the beginning. So it makes sense.
but like that implies sequeldom sorta cause youre like "oh mewtwo struck in an earlier movie so i guess now hes striking back?"

your poor childhood
your poor childhood
well we got to go back in and see the rest, to my fathers despair, and we got a free movie ticket.
ohhhh yeah i forgot about that episode
Yeah, it was interesting how they made the events of the movie intertwine with events from the show.
Funny thing is that with the second movie the closest thing they get to a similar intertwining is that Ash mentions in one episode "Oh, that's a Lugia like the one we saw in the Orange Islands." Hello? You freaking saved the whole world with "That Lugia" 's help mister "chosen one".
yeah seriously isnt ash like the center of that whole ancient prophecy or something
yeah seriously isnt ash like the center of that whole ancient prophecy or something
Yeah, I enjoyed that movie and all, but Ash was the freaking savior of planet Earth, you'd think people would recognize him wherever he went and crap.
EDIT: Who else thought Lugia was supposed to be The other three legendary birds combined into one? We can all blame the way the trailer was cut on that...
maybe its non-canon
Holy Hell, I can't remember Gary's voice being that annoying.
Holy Hell, I can't remember Gary's voice being that annoying.
It was always that annoying. Good thing he pretty much dissapeared from the series later on after finally making peace with Ash.
Am I the only one who cried when Ash got turned into stone?

When I was like, 9 and saw this movie in theaters.. that is.

That was a p. fun pokeball

What the show was trying to accomplish?
I'm pretty sure all that the show and all these movies were trying to accomplish was getting kids to buy more Pokemon products.
I remember trading with my friends to get all 4 of the promo cards (which I still have) and I also got the Ancient Mew and the different Mewtwo card that came with the VHS. I don't think I actually bought the movie, but I did get that card. I was a pretty hardcore card trader. My claim to fame was one day getting one kid to trade me his holographic Japanese Wigglytuff for some shitty card like a Fearow. Hell if I knew how to play the game, but I had a grasp on rarity.

To me, the show felt fun and uplifting, scenes of Pokemon shooting elements at each other and Team Rocket being idiots. The first movie started on the same note, with Pikachu versus Donphan. The scenes with the cloned Pokemon brutally fighting the originals, Pikachu just taking the beating from his clone, the dark Pokeballs able to capture recalled Pokemon, the scene inside the cloning machine and Ash DYING FROM PETRIFICATION scared me and I never wanted to see the movie again.
I did buy more Pokemon products, and went to the fourth movie in a specific theater to get a Celebi card, but I never really forgave the first movie for shifting away from its genre that hard. It was nightmare fuel.
The first time I bougt a pokemon card game I found 2 shiny mewtwo cards, i was like, yaaay :D Also another dinosaur like I can't recall the name.
But this is the past. (Arg)
Not gonna lie, the part where Ash died had me in tears when I was younger if only because of Pikachu. I mean when Pikachu usually shocked Ash he would go UUUAAAAAAAA and fall down in a comical Japanese manner and laughs would be had. but this time he just
wouldn't
get
up
;-;

It was Burger King, not Mcdonalds.
amazing movie
this movie taught me that vikings live in minessota
I have this on VHS.
Mewtwo's an abomination of science who's just struggling to make sense of the world. He freaking murders all of his creators JUST BY FREAKING THINKING ABOUT IT. And if you look in the original Japanese cut, he even went so far as to having religious implications to his plan, disgusted at the fact that he was created by man and not by God. He's on a mission to bring about Noah's Great Flood once again to purge the world of the sins of man.
Never new that, but I must say it's not very original (though back then it would have been awesome to see the deleted scene).
I remember seeing this movie at the cinema, and then the second and third one. It was around the third one they started raping Pokemon by adding new shitty ones that no-one liked.
