Little disclamer: I'm using photoshop but using settings similar to MSPaint, just with layers. Please excuse this.
Hello, this is my first pixel artwork project so bear with me.
In the Pokémon Megathread in GDD I began work on creating an in-game sprite that would look like a legitimate Pokémon (Torkace is a fanmade one, courtesy of a few others and I) and below is where I'm currently at:

Constructed and blown up for comparison reasons.
Previous stages of development can also be viewed from the provided link above, as well as below:

Approx 3 straight hours have been spent on this now.
I would like to ask what tips the citzens of MS Paint could share with me and any praise/constructive crit I would need. Thanks.
It looks cool (I saw it in the pokemon thread) but I think it doesn't feel like a pokemon sprite, like the shading is different (don't ask it just feels like it) and it also seems like there's not enough areas with an outline
Pokemon sprites have clear black (and in later games, dark coloured) outline on their sprites, and generally they have little to no dithering on them.

Thanks for the replys guys.
I understand what you mean with the dithering, and in my next update I hope to keep it to a minimum level.
In response to the outline, I agree I have been a little soft on them but with the reference sprites you showed me Fippe most of them have at least a quarter of their outline with a lighter colour contrasting the light source shone on them.
In the next update I'll be sure to address these issues, anything else that could be said for my latest one would be much appreciated.
I think the darkest gray on the shell needs to be dithered so it blends more, the steam/smoke coming from his nostrils break up the image too much making it harder to read. Lot of jagged lines here and there. You could maybe add some highlights to the shell and the shell vent part to make it look more metallic. Anyway it looks good and I like the way you did the smoke, one thing it lacks is purdy colors, the dull gray shell could be nicer, just have to experiment.
lookin' smexy

Thanks for the pointers.

Yeah I really want the shell to look more smoother so I'll look for a way around that, while keeping dithering in moderation.

I'll keep an eye on the head smoke too, I think some darker outlines would help seperate it a little more than it is now.

Again, I'll see what I can do with trying to smooth things out.

Metallic shine sounds good, I'll try not to go overboard with it too.

Thanks, I was having trouble with figuring out how to portray smoke as all my reference material came from stationary smoke (if that makes sense) and I wanted to go for a forceful steam approach to make it seem like it really is levitating (I'm still deciding on wether to make this into a proper sprite animation).

I'll try out making the shell lighter too, I agree it looks dullish and it's the same colour as the reference Torkoal sprite. It should look like a steel-type so that is definitaly on the to do list of things.
