I remember in interviews (or maybe it was old clips of him from within the games) he said he used to take a copy of the game home and test it out while it was being made- back when Neversoft were in charge, at least.
No idea if he still has that opportunity, or cares enough to do so- but if he does, then clearly what he thinks "is good" and what the fans think is good is different.
Like, there could be aspects of the game that he thought was amazing, or that he insisted on the newer physics to get a better "feel of actually skateboarding", and then people shat all over it.
