Humans have used dogs for work for a long time. Why eat them unless absolutely necessary? Dogs also are pretty fucking smart for an animal. Know people who even have had dogs save them. Eating them would be like eating a dolphin, ape, or elephant.
Pigs are extremely intelligent, as are octopuses, yet we still happily eat them.

Immortal souls.
Which is different.
Oh wow, I just found this thread
And I realized it's pretty offensive to me :v:
I think a better question is why people stopped eating dogs
they're animals just like cows or pigs or sheep, what's actually wrong with eating them?
As much as I would personally never eat a dog or cat because I've grown too fond of them as live companions, I agree. In the end they're animals like any other edible species.
About five years ago I was catching a taxi in Sydney, the driver was a thirty-something Chinese guy and when I got in he was finishing his lunch, a meat pie from a nearby bakery which got us chatting about food. He told me that when he first moved to Australia with his family in the 80s they went grocery shopping for the first time, and were pleasantly surprised to find cans of meat with a picture of a dog on them for sale. They bought a few cans and made a stew out of the contents, and were told a few days later by a family friend that they'd been enjoying a lovely dog-food casserole.
Great taxi ride.

Are you Chinese?
Poverty, nothing like lack of bread to make the dogs around you look like floating steaks just like in the cartoons
Most people know dogs and cats as domesticated creatures. So when people hear "eating dogs and cats" they think eating household pets. Same with horses in some cases.
This. In Sweden we eat horse meat and I've heard that to Americans and probably some other countries it's a disgusting thing to do.
While it's true you do often develop a sense of companionship with horses if you care enough, even over here - but we still eat horse. So it's only fair to assume they think the same way about dogs and cats when western countries think it's disgusting.

Koreans and some Japanese are the only majority of people that eat dogs, and even then, it's not like they're eating domesticated pets, they're eating wild dogs.
PS if you didn't know already amentothatt is one of the only mainland Chinese posters on FP
I spent a year in Thailand a couple years ago, and when one of my guides accidentally hit a dog with his scooter (Vespas are everywhere over there, and the dog was not that big) the dog's owners came out of the house, picked up the dog, wouldn't accept payment or compensation, and took the dog back inside to prepare for cooking. At least in southcentral/southeast asia, people seem to think of them in a similar way to chickens. They go until they don't, and when they stop serving that function: they make great food.
I don't think there is anything wrong with it. Like what others already mentioned, it's no different from eating a pig, cow, chicken, horse, etc. Meat is meat.
I just ejaculated in my ice cream.

It's not just wild dogs, it's a specific livestock breed at least in Korea.
