IMO I think ghosts and hauntings are all bullshit and not real, but that would be a cool place to explore. I say go for it. I suggest bringing a camera, a few friends, flashlights, and some form of a weapon to defend yourself just in case.
I've had "paranormal" experiences before. I don't necessarily blame "ghosts", all I know is I saw something or heard something. Something caused it. I love the mystery and adventure. About the defense part, I doubt they'll let me bring one of our guns. It'll have to be some form of knife. Even if we're down there illegally, I don't want to be caught with a gun. I also think it will probably just be one friend and myself; most other friends would be too scared.

Yeah just saying cause when we went to the hobo house we didn't know what we were gonna possibly meet up with so we salvaged whatever we could. 1 friend had a piece of wood, 1 friend was carrying a brick, 1 friend had the handle bar from a lawn mower, and we all had an assortment of bats.
And if it is just you and 1 other person I can garentee you will be scared shitless. The more people you have the easier per say it is. It's still scary but damn I wouldn't go with just 1 other person.

I'll see who I can recruit. I don't trust enough of my friends at school; not too close with most of them. My one friend I trust with my life, the others, not so much.
But I don't want to derail OP's thread with my own plans anymore, so thanks for the info guys, I'll see what else I can find on the topic.
Question:
I live in Sacramento, and there are TONS of abandoned buildings (there is a giant boarded up grocery store type thing near by , and a ways away, there is an abandoned rail yard).
I love the idea of urban exploring, but the problem is, well, I live in California, and in Sacramento, and there are a TON of gangs. I'm afraid of breaking into some gang hideout or strong hold or something.
Anyone have similar experiences? What are the chances?

Before you go to explore the place you would probably want to scout it out breifly during the day just to get an idea.
Also about the places being inhabited, really it is just your mind playing tricks on you. It may seem really likely at the time that some guy is gonna jump out with a shiv but really if you think about it if you were a hobo would you want to fight 4+ kids with their own weapons? They are more scared of you then you are of them.
Gangs usually don't chill in abandoned buildings. Unless they are a pov gang or something. You'd be more likely to wander into crack addicts and mentally unstable homeless people then armed gang members

I don't live in an urban area, but yes, I do know that gangs occasionally use abandoned areas. You could probably find info on the gang hideouts and the safer sites to explore via asking around though. You don't need me to tell you you'd be in deep shit if you were found in their territory. Best of luck though. You could probably also find stuff via the web, here I'll link you to the California page of the site I've been using: http://www.uer.ca/locations/newlist.asp?n=1&statfilter=160&country=United%20States&province=California
Doesn't look like they have anything of interest in Sacramento, maybe there's another area you live near by on the list.

This is true, I also live in Sac, and there are "gangsters" crawling all over this place, and a ton of abandoned buildings.

left by the workers.
It's 12:40 AM and you're talking about an insomniac institute for children who were brought there to die.
I am going to cry myself to sleep.
God I love such things! But isn't it Illegal?
I'm pretty sure if you're caught trespassing you need to be accused of an intent also. If they catch a bunch of guys with camera equipment and we explain that we are not looking to vandalize, then I don't think they will press charges.
Colleges have underground tunnels. They could be very fun for exploring.
Just don't go exploring tunnels while depressed, drunk, and high at the same time like this kid did.
I live in a city that was famous for a booming silver industry in the early 20th century. Though there is maybe one or two plants still in buisiness (one of them being the largest fine silver companies in the world where a majority of five-star resturants order silverwear from), there are doezens of huge abandoned factories throughout the city.
I've always thought of exploring some of those buildings, but none of my friends are into that type of stuff. :sigh:

If you were caught with a prybar or hammer to get into a building, they would press charges regardless of cameras though right? If you kept it in your bag, would they search you?
This is the kind of thing I'd love to do, but my friends wouldn't.

More or less the same. I have one friend that sees and hears weird shit he attributes to either ghosts or the unknown. Some buildings he'll go into, others he won't get near. For me, the fear of the adventure is all a part of it.
I should fly over there to Spain and go exploring shit with you because we're badass right
If someone spots you just run.

Any areas around me would likely be off the beaten path or old industrial buildings. Most probably don't have security, if they do, at the most probably just barbed wire, maybe a camera or two, possibly rent a cops.
What are my chances of being detected? I've picked up army survival guides and other books here and there that have brief bits on stealth and infiltration and I can be pretty light on my feet. I don't know if this counts for anything in urban exploration though.

I assumed they all had some sort of horrible disfigurement.
I have an abandoned mental asylum 10 minutes from me, It's so fucking creepy that even Britain's Most Haunted went to it.

Never have and never fucking will go in there...
I have however walked up to the front door.

I should live in Britain. It seems Britain has all the awesome creepy shit. Imagine exploring one of the many castles on the island. That would be fucking awesome.
There's a vent behind my house on a grassed over field.

Yeah it's pretty crazy the amount of creepy shit we have here, my town is pretty much 1 x 1 mile, yet it has the asylum, an abandoned slaughterhouse and a castle on top of the heighest hill of the town.
The castle has white lights shining from the floor up at it at night, and if you've ever seen a friend do that thing with a torch where they shine it up their face from their chin, yeah.

Go into one, and hunt for old forgotten silver. Then you can feel like a treasure hunter and a professional burglar.

Bring crowbar for unexpected headcrabs.
Goddamn, I've always wanted to try this. Unfortunately there are no abandoned buildings near where I live that aren't next to busy roads or other buildings where people would see me breaking in.
If someone spots you just run.
That's the worst thing you can do. Let them approach you and then explain.
Only a dumbass would run.
I'd love to go to that abandoned mental asylum at night with a bunch of friends. It would be scary but memorable no doubt.

Well there's this one place that's fun to explore, but it's not a building. It's this place with a bunch of stacked concrete tubes. Fun as hell to jump and climb those things, but even funner to look for "hidden" messages written inside some of the tubes. I've been there twice because my friends like to get high there, but I enjoyed it because I'm one of those hyperactive jumping around-type guys.
Damn, writing that made me want to go there again. It's been a while.

I also have the same thing in my area. Always fun to climb around and traverse the honeycomb like structures. Sometimes there are hobo's in them though.
