I think all of those movies are thoroughly terrible but nobody wants to hear about that again
[editline]30th August 2013[/editline]
Suuuuch poor stories, dialogue, acting, cinematography and action. But their subject matter is a fantasy nerds wet dream so these flaws are not apparent to them. not when there are elves and goblins and wizards and shit
ok sorry

Or most people are just capable of enjoying good films.
But the lotr trilogy and The Godfather are both incredibly awesome movies
But the lotr trilogy and The Godfather are both incredibly awesome movies
Yeah but TheFilmSlacker meant that even though some people who didn't like The Godfather as much as others, they can still recognise its great cinematic quality. Not trying to say that The Godfather is worse than LOTR trilogy or vice versa but for someone who might not be into Tolkien fantasy, they should still be able to recognise that the trilogy isn't the most overrated piece of turd.
Don't forget about the genre-setting story, the epic dialogues, the acting(who doesn't adore Gimly? huh?), the world-panning cinematography and the tight yet not overdone action that juxtaposes thrill and imersion in a perfect way.
look at me guys i don't like popular movies look
Nah, Rusty likes movies that happen to be very popular too. It's just that the film he hates also happens to be extremely popular; he's not 'hating it because of its popularity'.

This whole statement just proves that hes either trying too hard to troll or he thinks hes a "patrician" with superior taste.
Pic related, its Rusty.
You can say that you're not interested in the stories, that's fine, they're not movies for everyone, but to deny that they have good cinematography, acting, writing and action is just being stubborn.
I don't really enjoy The Godfather, but I can definitely see why people love it as much as they do.
Let's be honest, half of the value of the film is the grandeur of the Tolkien universe. The wide, epic shots and even the camera-work during intimate pieces of dialogue are only as cool as the art direction. The acting is good in that it's immersive, but what exactly makes it spectacular? A lot of characters are just the tradition archetypes of fantasy. And the writing feeds so heavily off of the universe that a person lacking any and all interest in fantasy probably couldn't find much value in the script.
The action is pretty impeccable though, as is the score, editing, and effects.
I personally like the trilogy, but is it really 11+ Academy Awards incredible? Is it really perfect? And yeah I find that lot of the time this:
But their subject matter is a fantasy nerds wet dream so these flaws are not apparent to them
is often true. But whatever, my grievance is comparing it to The Godfather. Not really an apt comparison, because enjoying fantasy is a prerequisite for LotR, whereas as a partiality to mob movies isn't really important for The Godfather.
Those movies would have been a bit better without all the masturbatory shots of characters walking, because Peter Jackson loves those books and thinks its the coolest shit ever.
[editline]29th August 2013[/editline]
Now that I think about everything about those movies is masturbatory, same thing with King Kong.
Maybe Peter Jackson should stop adapting things he loves, or he needs someone to tell him "no, this a movie, not a book"
LOTR owns.
Saying that they're as masturbatory as the source material is blowing it way the hell out of proportion.
I never said the source material is masturbatory, I said Peter Jackson was being masturbatory.
I never read the LOTR books, I think I read The Hobbit when I was younger though.

I am legitimately pissed that I didn't see this in theaters, that was fucking awesome.
Still haven't bothered with the Lord trilogy...
I think once I've seen the likes of Pan's Labyrinth and other worthwhile fantasy flicks, it'll prepare me best.

Pan's Labyrinth and LotR are way different kinds of fantasy.
It's like comparing 2001 a space odyssey to Star Wars.

Sorry, I took this:

As you equating the way he shot the film to the pacing of the books.
Guys cmon Rusty is just trolling us.

and it's wrong why?
and it's wrong why?
there's nothing wrong with it
it's just that saying that you'll watch something to get ready to watch something else while they have no relation whatsoever other than the general theme doesn't make a whole lot of sense
and it's wrong why?
Stop tip-toeing around the movies and just watch them.
They're not hard to digest by any stretch.

It's not like I'm watching romantic dramas to prepare to watch them, why is it bad to have a plan :(

what do you care is the real question
what do you care is the real question
if you don't want people to care why post about it at all
if you don't want people to care why post about it at all
I'd rather have a discussion than have people blurt "just watch the 10 hour series... just do it".

which cuts of lotr are the best? extended, no other option.
I'd rather have a discussion than have people blurt "just watch the 10 hour series... just do it".
ok here's the discussion
watch the extended version or whatever
the lotr movies are good, there's no need to worry so much about 'getting ready to watch them' or anything, you're just creating too much hype for yourself, just go ahead and watch them
