Starship Troopers- 4/5
Really impressed by this actually. I expected just a solid gory action flick but instead I got a clever and political satire. This isn't a war film, it's an anti-war film and a damn good one. Lots of satirical elements and political statements throughout. This film is just... So fucking solid in absolutely every aspect. It's smart, funny, well directed, performances are solid, great CGI that holds up very very well today... I frickin loved this goddamn movie. It was brilliant.
Ah thank you for seeing what Paul Verhoeven was trying to do with it. Too many people badmouth the film for being unfaithful to the book whilst not knowing that the director was intentionally doing it. He's making fun of the book. Classic Verhoeven.
Yeah, I was interested in reading the book upon seeing the film but then I found out that the film is essentially mocking the novel for being pro-military fascist writing, by turning it on its head and making the film a biting satire that just makes war and the military look stupid and evil. I thought it was a great script.
I'm also a huge fan of Verhoeven's Robocop for the same reason, it's also extremely violent and cool but it's heavily political film that tackles capitalism, gentrification, privatisation and our progress towards a dystopian society.
Need to get round to Total Recall.

Maybe Showgirls as well. I know it's considered to be fucking terrible but I've read some people (such as Jim Jarmusch) praise it and call it a satire. But I dunno. I'm interested in seeing it just out of pure curiousity tbh, and to see the thing that killed Kyle MacLachlan's career and reduced him from David Lynch to fucking Sex And The City (still in my mind one of the single worst things ever created by cinema and television)
Gravity 8.5/10
One of the few movies that are worth watching in 3D.

This reminds me of when Rifftrax (a bunch of MST3K alums who took what they did to B-movies and applied it to blockbusters) did a live riff on the movie. So many people flipped their shit because "they were missing the fucking point" because it's supposed to be such biting satire. Me? I don't see the satire. I mean, there are points where it's obvious that a statement's being made ("Mobile Infantry made me the man I am today"), but the rest of the time it's just mindless action and/or shitty acting (Denise Richards can't fake-smile worth a damn. "SMILE-O-TRON 3000 ACTIVATED"). And Niel Patrick Harris. You may claim that I am also missing "the fucking point", but screw it, I prefer watching Starship Troopers with the Rifftrax commentary. It's one of those movies everyone holds up on such a high pedestal and those are the movies most deserving of the Rifftrax treatment.

edit:
Gravity 9/10
Spend the extra bucks and see it in 3d/imax/dbox or whatever you want, it's worth it
Gravity - 8/10
Solid film.
[editline]October 6th 2013[/editline]
Damn Sandra Bullock has got some butt.
Gravity - 9/10
My only issue with the film is [sp]that the level of "She can't catch a fucking break" was a little overdone at points.[/sp]
That opening take was a masterpiece though.
Pleasantville (1998)
Toby Maguire is a square geek and his sister played by the brilliant Reese Witherspoon is his polar opposite as a girl who likes her cunt munched out on the first date. They both get sucked into the TV and dumped into a 1950's ultra conservative sitcom. So, we have a story of old meets new and that conflict of morality. They could have easily made a film where the 2 kids are rebelling against the society they suddenly find themselves in but the writer/director plays a much more intelligent card. This is fantastic because the underlaying message is about liberal values and what life actually means, something much more shallow than the constraints and expectations put on us by society. Its quite light in places where men expect dinner on the table at 6 and shock horror if a couple of dating kids dare to hold hands.
Things have changed since the 50's, sexuality, the role of women, drugs and everything else has. This film is probably more important now than ever before because the social change of inertia has gone past mere acceptance of peoples choices and bred a new bunch of ultra liberal bigots who scream racist, homophobe and nazi at anyone who doesn't accept their version of a modern world. I'd say watch this film and take a fucking look in the mirror.
LIVE AND LET LIVE! Peace.
Fans of the Truman show will enjoy this film.

Instinct - 7/10
Star Trek Into Fartness - 8.5/10
I had a couple issues with the 2009 Star Trek, mostly a really shitty bad guy and Kirk was rushed into the captains chair, both issue mostly fixed in this movie. Only thing I really don't like is Khans magic blood.
World War Z - 8/10
I went in pretty much ready to hate this movies guts, but to my surprise it's a pretty fun flick that manages to really not fuck up the book too much (because not much from the book is in it) outside of the zombies. Really didn't like the overuse of Shaky Cam and CGI Zombies though, it was actually jarring to see real actors play zombies after so much of the CGI ones. Also they needed to slow the pace of the movie down a bit, and give us some time with Brad Pitt and his family so we care a bit more about them.
Contagion - 9.5/10
I don't want to touch anything ever again.
Instinct - 7/10
That it?
The Kingdom
Decent enough flick. Strong "murica fuck yeah" undertone. Movie felt slightly underdeveloped somehow and ended abruptly imo
That it?
I don't really have anything to say besides the film was okay and Anthony Hopkins did a good performance
I'm thinking about watching "No Country For Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood" soon. I've heard nothing but good things about both of them.
Don't think. Just watch.

Is Natural Born Killers good? I've heard mixed things about it and have yet to watch it.
i liked it
It's pretty good.
Wall-E
maybe like an 8.7/10
The internship - 6/10
Pacific Rim - 7.5/10...
Wanted giant robots fucking up monsters.
Got giant robots fucking up monsters.
Also got a really cookie cutter human drama side to it all but the action more than made up for it.
It also has a pretty great musical score.
I felt that the plot itself was a tad convoluted but I didn't let it bother me too much.
Gravity - 9/10
Superb acting and great visual effects. Overall an amazing space film.
the lone ranger - 7/10
had some good action scenes and good casting, i liked that it was filmed like a real western and used the western frontier as opposed to a lot of set pieces or screens, but overall was average at best. also, jerry bruckheimer needs to learn to keep pirates writing in pirates, and not try to expand it into other existing media (prince of persia).
i also liked how once again hans zimmer lifted ennio morricone's music from once upon a time in the west (previously done in potc dead man's chest) and didn't credit him. fuckin faggot can't write his own damn music.

i find it tragic
Once Upon A Time is one of my favorite westerns, but like I said a long time ago. It isn't the greatest as people tend to say it is
Once Upon A Time is one of my favorite westerns, but like I said a long time ago. It isn't the greatest as people tend to say it is
It should be almost impossible for a film to be the greatest of its genre. Your absolute bestest favorite western? Sure. Undeniably the greatest film of its genre? Can't think of a movie deserving of that title tbh.
You are talking about Once Upon a Time in the West right?
Howl's Moving Castle 7/10
This is the second Ghibli film I've seen (after Princess Mononoke) and it feels similar in many ways. The art and animation is fantastic and beautiful, there's a sense of wonder with all the magic and mystery, most of the voice acting is good, and the plot is impenetrable and makes very little sense.
I really loved the art in this movie; I like the shiny/globular art and coloring style of these movies, and the painted backgrounds and little details make everything pretty. It reminds me of Del Toro at times, with the simultaneous fascination and fear of the mysterious, magical unknown.
However, the confusion I feel definitely hurts my overall impression. Some plot points are drawn out for too long (like the incredibly obvious "reveal" that [sp]Billy Crystal has/is Christian Bale's heart[/sp]) and some are awkwardly exposited very quickly (Turnips' true identity). Other scenes and concepts are confusing - I never really understood Sophie's curse, Howl's identity, or why everyone was suddenly buddy-buddy with the witch.
I certainly enjoyed it overall, though. I'll definitely be seeing more Ghibli movies - maybe My Neighbor Totoro next.
Casino 10/10 - Exactly my type of movie. Loved every part of it. Can anyone recommend anything like this? I have seen Usual Suspects, Goodfellas, Godfather, Heat, Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.. and few more which I cannot remember right now.
