Thor: The Dark World - 8/10 Not necessarily a masterpiece, but it does what it wants to and it does it well. Surprisingly funny with very good pacing (like most of Marvel's movies), I was entertained throughout and having a great time. The only parts that felt off were the scenes in the First Act on Earth because, much like it was in the First Act of The Avengers, it sucks you out a little and makes you feel almost like you aren't even watching a superhero movie. As I said, the script is kind of cheesy but it is fun, and in my opinion fun counts for a lot more than being deep or complex (unless the other aspects of your film are also shit, but Thor: The Dark World has great cinematography and effects, the acting is solid, and the set design is gorgeous) All I can say to the end is I am ready for the next wave of Marvel movies. With Cap'n getting is sequel next year, along with god knows what else, I think Marvel is going to continue going strong. With Pacific Rim, Gravity, Captain Philips, and now Thor: The Dark World, I am finally remembering what it feels like to go to the cinema and have fun again.
The Ladykillers (2004) - 5/10 I grabbed The Ladykillers in a buy-one-get-one-free sale at a used video store. I had never heard of this movie before, but I had started watching the Coen Brothers' movies, always enjoy heists, and saw that Hanks, Simmons, and Wayans were starring. I figured that for "free" I could take a chance on it. Unfortunately, this just wasn't that good. This movie is definitely a weaker outing by the brothers. All the signature ingredients are there - idiosyncratic characters, a unique soundtrack, dark humor - but they just don't come together well. Perhaps the relatively straightforward plot didn't mesh well with their more meandering style, or the relatively large cast wasn't fleshed out enough, but it didn't feel all that great. There were good bits - Tom Hanks as a loquacious southern gentleman was quite entertaining, for one - but those were few and far between and what filled in the gaps just wasn't that entertaining. I did enjoy the sepia-toned southern summer theme. Perhaps I shall seek out the original 1955 version, to compare and contrast.
It was really weird how for a huge portion of the movie, nothing really happens, and then BAM, more than half the characters die from lame, anticlimactic cirumstances in a span of 5 minutes. The nothingness really stood out and soiled everything, which is strange because I really enjoy The Big Lebowski and Seinfeld.
Face/Off - 9/10 This movie is insane. Cage and Travolta are fantastic as Travolta and Cage, and the gun-fu action scenes build with the stylish direction for one heck of a movie. Some parts got a bit too ridiculous (all the emotional face-touching, the ending and the credits song, the sheer Cage on display, the runtime) but oh man is this a good time. I gotta watch some more John Woo movies. Recommendations?
I gotta watch some more John Woo movies. Recommendations?
Hard Boiled and The Killer are both great, those are the only Woo movies i've seen
LEGO Marvel: Maximum Overload - 3/4 [t]http://www.animationmagazine.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/LEGO-Marvel-Super-Heroes-Maximum-Overload-post-2.jpg[/t] A fun little animated romp. Loki attempts to build an army of supercharged supervillains, and Marvel's finest must put a stop to them. The humor was pretty great (although Spider-Man got a bit annoying), and it was fun to see all the characters interacting. Plus, JK Simmons returns as J. Jonah Jameson! All five minisodes are on YouTube, and the twenty-minute short film is on Netflix.
As Good as it Gets 9/10 Jack Nicholson as a neurotic loon makes for a very funny movie
The Arctic Giant (Superman cartoon) Superman fights a T-Rex! I've heard of the legendary classic Fleischer Superman cartoons, but I think I've only ever seen one or two of them. Browsing through Netflix I saw that they have the collection of them, so I figured I'd watch them a couple at a time. This was pretty great. Yes, it is dated (seventy years will do that) but there's a good deal of fun packed in there. Superman has a wonderful physicality to his movements as he runs faster than a speeding bullet, lifts things with more power than a locomotive, and leaps tall buildings in a single bound (he didn't fly at this point, however eventually he took to the skies as the animators found the leaping too silly-looking). All the signatures of the franchise are here - fearless reporter Lois Lane and coworker Clark Kent (slyly keeping his alter-ego secret) are just as you expect to see. Plus, you can tell that John Williams took some cues from this theme when composing his iconic Superman theme. If you're a fan of Superman, animation, or old-timey film definitely give these a look.
Scott Pilgrim V.S. The World I'm not 100% sure what to say on this one, it's jumping around at the beginning got annoying but the entire movie I was kind of just going "huh", if that made any sense. I might just pick up the graphic novels out of curiosity one day though.
(he didn't fly at this point, however eventually he took to the skies as the animators found the leaping too silly-looking)
They found it tedious to animate him leaping all the time not silly. Leaping in great heights made sense since he had super-strength and Earth had lower gravity than Krypton but flying? It didn't really make sense back then but then again, Fleischer Superman punched energy away so whatever. Besides, Siegel was already thinking of putting in flight as one of Kal-El's superpowers due to competition with Captain Marvel (he had the power of flight before Superman). [editline]10th November 2013[/editline] also, besides John Woo's 'Hardboiled', watch 'A Better Tomorrow'. but they're very different in tone to his American movies
Rurouni Kenshin (2012) Run of the mill Samourai film from Japan about a killer who wants to use his life for good but keeps getting pulled back in by his old contemporaries. Its the usual tale of the strong trying to dominate the weak and then in walks in the mysterious good guy with his own baggage. The script is nothing special as it feels like a rehash of countless other movies. On a plus point the action is quite well shot and fans of fighting games will notice borrows ideas from old titles like Tekken and Soul calibre. The running time of over 2 hours was far too much to keep us all from clock watching. Kurosawa set the bar for these films back in the 50's and this doesn't touch it. Worth a watch if you like this kind of stuff but not really for non fans of the genre. In the Realm of the Senses (1976) Well this was basically a Jap porno with proper actors and a film crew. A tale of sexual passion between a sex addict and this dumb bitch. The sex is real and the scenes leave very little to the imagination. Banned in many counties and rightfully so as its top shelf stuff. Overblown, slow and repetitive scenes made this a waste of my time. Boring. On a similar topic the next teaser for Von Triers Nymphomaniac just got released this week. Hopefully that will be a masterclass at making a sex film. Kisses. Scott Pilgrim really rubbed me the wrong way, pretty much the whole movie. The comic book effects were really obnoxious and felt out of place, none of the jokes were funny, all of the references seemed to only exist to pull in the nerd crowd and trick people into liking the movie because 'omg it referenced zelda it knows me', I felt no chemistry between Ramona and Scott, and also Ramona was a fucking cold bitch I couldn't related to wanting to win over at all.
Gravity, 10/10 Go see it, that is all.
I think Edgar Wright's style suits british comedy much better, that's partially why Scott Pilgrim failed imo
Watched Captain America: The first Avenger again since it was on TV and I was bored. Eh 4-5/10? I mean it was watchable I guess.
I thought the movie was mediocre when I first saw it. My brother wanted to watch it with me, so I saw it again, liked it even more. I find it gets better with repeated viewings and the comics compliment the movie so much.
I can't speak for the comics but the film does improve with a second watch. The film is rather unique and its wackyness carried it very well. Its a cultural moment that captures something of it's time and I loved it for that. Because of its particular style it will polarise audiences one way or the other. I've also got to the end of a huge project at work and now spare time is available I hope to share some stuff on my watchlist here and try out some of the stuff thats been posted here. Theres a lot of good chatter about Gravity, not a film I'd usually try out but filmpunch has opened my horizons. I've got La Passe for tonight which should be good. A Separation from the same Iranian director was excellent. Much love. (User was permabanned for this post ("alt of jewdozer" - Rusty100))
Angel-A 77/100 It had it's moments, some were really really really good like the scene I linked below, but some were a bit cheesy and out of place. Nice movie. Seriously one of my favorite scenes of all time. Very nice.
A Separation is a fantastic movie. I'd recommend it to pretty much anyone, even if they're not into foreign movies. Kind of like Pan's Labyrinth in that aspect.
What amazed me about that film was if you wrote down what the film is actually about it would fit on the back of a matchbox yet somehow the movie swallows you up and spits you back out at the end credits. A modern masterclass in story telling. Maybe its the honest delivery without the usual melodrama and crappy soundtrack that usually steers the mood of such films.
watched Election last night, really loved it, very nice satirical high school/coming of age film. I was a bit skeptical being that it was Reese Witherspoon, but she's dynamite here, couldn't be a better role for her. The director went on to make About Schmidt and The Descendents which were superb too. This is probably his best film for me though, just sweet in all respects. It's a real gem of the 90s, hilarious too.
The only part from Scott Pilgrim vs the World i laughed at was "You made me swallow my gum, now it's going to be in my digestive tract for SEVEN YEARS!" But eh, i think it's an okay movie.
ive seen scott pilgrim 4 times and am yet to really like it. Its sometimes quite good and sometimes terrible but its always loaded with cringe
HBO is airing all of Band of Brothers today, dank.
I've still never seen it. Is it really as good as people say?
It's probably the best mini series to date.
Bad Grandpa Seriously this movie is horrible. Don't watch it. Its incredibly short, stupid, there's really no plot, they break character all the time, its just a massive steaming pile of shit. It's sort of funny at a few times briefly but it's all forced humor. 0.5/10 A Haunted House Again, we were just looking for a stupid movie to watch so we found this on Netflix at a friend's house. Its basically a parody of Paranormal Activity with black jokes, excessive sexual content and ridiculously emulating tropes from the movies. Pretty fun to watch with friends but I wouldn't recommend it individually.
Like I said, the movie is a lot easier to like when you've read the source material, and I know that sounds really stupid because honestly, the movie should be able to stand on its own, but it's really hard to explain. There's a lot of throwbacks that I wouldn't have caught if I didn't read the comics ("Remember that time with Holly?" was just kind of a throw-away line in the movie and we never see her. She was a MAJOR character in the comics and I have no idea why they didn't include her in the film. It would have made it a lot more interesting.) and the characters in the movie are much different. I don't even know why I'm trying to explain why I like this movie because I honestly don't know, and that's strange for me. Usually I can pick apart what's good and what's bad about the movie, but no matter how flawed Scott Pilgrim was, it's still one of my all-time favorite movies. I'll admit, the gaming references were obnoxious sometimes (that line about Zelda and Tetris in the beginning is actually cringe-worthy), but it's more of a comfort zone movie for me, I guess. Whenever I hear people say that they hated it, I always recommend the comics because they're much better, but I totally get why some people didn't like it. I'm just glad that it finally found its audience.
Well, from what you've said I can definitely see I should attempt to read the graphic novels, and then watch the movie again so I can point out things and appreciate it more.
scott pilgrim's problem is that they push the scott/knives relationship further than it's supposed to go, and not enough emphasis on scott/ramona. and rusty the effects and reference nonsense is all intentional, did you even read the graphic novels? that shit was lifted straight from the pages you dumbass. anyway, the movie sucks imo, comics are way better. they really should have just waited for the last one to come out before fully writing the film. also michael cera.
Some kind of wonderful 7/10 God i love 80's feel good movies. A warning though, it gets kinda sappy towards the end, it's my biggest gripe with it. But liked it nonetheless!
La Passe (2012) What is it with this Iranian director Asghar Farhadi? Somehow he is able to take characters who are a group of nobodies going through something that happens every day and has you glued to the screen wondering what is going to happen next. Performances are absolutely spellbinding and the way the story slowly reveals itself is like melted chocolate with 10 flavours. Absolutely no music, no artificial stimulous but just actors on a screen telling their story. Theres a good few morals or thoughts behind the film which is pretty much open to interpretation but as well as many things I took that the past affects the future like the butterfly effect, meaning something so nothing can have far reaching effects on other people later on. Fans of 'A Separation' will once again be blown away by this mature film for serious movie lovers. I just want to keep typing about this film, just go watch the fucking thing!
y'know jewdozer, it's a shame that you're a massive bigot, 'cause i really like your opinions on films.
Europa Report Pretty neat movie. Has a nice realistic space mission feel to it and managed to keep me interested regardless of how slow it was. Unfortunately the acting is mediocre and the story is absent of a real emotional thrust, and doesn't pay off. I'd say it much more enjoyable to people who like space and that kind of shit, or else you'll probably just get bored. [sp]I hated the alien, at first I thought they were some kind of cool "light" entities but then it's a fucking octopus. geez.[/sp] 6.8/10
y'know jewdozer, it's a shame that you're a massive bigot, 'cause i really like your opinions on films.
Don't take it too serious, I love everybody, even the fgt's. [editline]11th November 2013[/editline] Little white lies (2010) A group of friends take the same annual holiday every year but this year one is missing because he's had a serious accident. Emotions, tempers and feeling run high as everything comes out. It's rare a group of actors can get together on screen like this and make you believe they have all grown up together but this lot pull it right off. Theres elements of this I can relate to, the whole who's fucked who and the tensions in a group of people who have known each other for a long time. Theres a good few familiar faces like Marion Cotillard and Francois Cluzet but everybody performs at the same high standard. After watching Le Passe I wondered if I could enjoy anything else, this was just what I needed. A fantastic watch.
