i saw Filth today
really disappointing. just overwhelmingly strange and not a lot of substance. [sp]his death at the end sort of makes the entire film seem pointless, too. as well as the fact i called him dressing up as his dead or gone wife like 15 minutes in.[/sp]
i mean, it's worth one watch. but probably not another.
aaaww, i was looking so forward to enjoying it :(.
i guess ill still watch it for its silliness and not expect alot of sense
imo Filth was amazing one of the best of the year. I'd recommend it pretty strongly. Loved everything about it.
This exists? I thought Lucas destroyed the oldest copies and the closest thing we had was the Despecialized Edition?
http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Harmys-STAR-WARS-Despecialized-Edition-HD-V25-MKV-IS-OUT-NOW/topic/12713/
the closest version to the theatrical releases are the 93 laserdisc editions, which were later put on dvd in 06. really someone should just upscale those to 1080p and call it a day.
(on a similar note, Sif > Jane, what are you even doing Thor).
Is Sif the chick played by Kat Dennings? I remember watching the first Thor and thinking the same thing.
Is Sif the chick played by Kat Dennings?I remember watching the first Thor and thinking the same thing.
No, Sif is the female Asgardian who's in Thor's group of friends back in Asgard.
No, Sif is the female Asgardian who's in Thor's group of friends back in Asgard.
Oh.
Well, I liked Kat Dennings more than Natalie Portman, even though her character was barely in it.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)
Some have likened this to No country for old Men and There will be blood and I'd say thats spot on. Whilst this is not quite in the same league it's still a huge hitter in terms of building tension using facial expressions and silence. Brad Pitt oozes power on screen as Jesse James and support from Casey Affleck is near on perfect. The shoot outs are authentic, refraining from the quickdraw hammer shooting and perfect aiming. Theres not really too much in story here but the presentation and style of the film carry it above the rest.
This film is near on perfection and should be celebrated.

Dead man (1995)
Johnny Depp stars in this pointless film with nothing in it whatsoever.
Waste of time and only for fans of films with ............ bored even writing about this.

I watched The World's End, This is the End, Pirates: At World's End, and End of Evangelion all in one sitting.
They are really funny, pretty funny, moderately boring but still entertaining enough to watch through, and interesting respectively.
There will be blood - 9/10
Really good movie. I was watching it having no idea it was where the "I drink your milkshake" thing was from, so when he started talking about milkshake in the middle of that pretty serious scene I was like "no way!"
The Fellowship of the Ring - 9.5/10
Watched it in a class today, still one of my all time favorites.
The Hobbit - 5.5/10
Figured I'd watch the Hobbit later on since I hadn't seen it yet and wow I absolutely despised it. I heard it was pretty mediocre, but damn, I was surprised. The amount of CGI caked on was fucking ridiculous and all the characters in the group were flat and boring (save for Gandalf.) Really disappointing. Midway through I thought I was watching a Disney movie. There was just no soul to it. On its own I suppose the movie was alright, I was just expecting a lot more.
The Orcs' cartoony Middle-Eastern sounding accents were retarded too. not everything needs to be ~epic~ and ~grandiose~, it would've worked out better if they made it more like it was intended. too many tryhard scenes of "ooh, look at this beautiful computer generated scenery"
Too many scenes and plot elements felt unnecessary to me in The Hobbit. I mean, I get that the director can have his own interpretations, but certain stuff just did not work for me and I feel as though I would have enjoyed it a lot more had they not existed.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest- 10/10
I've been going through a lot of old movies that I was shown in high school by my film teacher, and this one was always one of my favorites that he showed me. I won't even go into detail about it, go into it cold and enjoy.
[sp] Nurse Ratched is one of my favorite villains, too. She's such a perfect bitch. [/sp]
This movie was perfect.
[sp]god damn the surprise when Chief started talking[/sp]
watched The Last Temptation of Christ again
wow, I thought this movie was great before but seeing it again now, it's truly something. Everything good I thought about it just got amplified and man, Dafoe, what an actor. Dafoe is best Jesus. Scorsese works his magic like always and the soundtrack is really something. Some shots and scenes are still playing themselves over and over again in my head. Also AK'z I must disagree (at least I think I disagree) with you in that this movie portrayed Jesus as someone who's solely human. To me, this movie wanted to show someone who was equally as human as he was 'divine'.
"The dual substance of Christ-the yearning, so human, so superhuman, of man to attain to God...has always been a deep inscrutable mystery to me."
It's just that most depictions of him in film largely forgot the human part.
10/10 it is accomplished
Superman Returns
no otisburg 4/10
lol what a total snore fest. Spacey was cool, everyone else was terrible cast. Why go all the trouble to find someone who would try to copy Reeve's performance as much as possible and then have bloody Kate Bosworth who acted nothing like Margot Kidder's Lois Lane. Or in fact, why did they ignore how anybody who acted like the characters in the Donner films besides Superman/Clark Kent. Brandon Routh acted like a robot would if it was programmed to copy Reeve as much as possible without the charm and originality. In fact I found it creepy. Suit looked bad too. No fun except for Lex Luthor. Plot was retarded and it doesn't make sense. e.g. how is the Fortress of Solitude's computer Jor-El still working if the control panel blew up in Lester's Superman II?
The big question is if Singer wanted so much to copy Donner's Superman as much as possible, why did he leave out the most important aspects? The charm, fun and inspirational things? The epic scope of the original Superman is also nowhere to be found.

I don't think I mentioned he was wholeheartedly human, but rather a more human interpretation of the somewhat "divine" character as compared to most interpretations. It's a lot more a film which I can take in on the face of it than as compared to most other biblical interpretations.
That being said, I'm in a mode where the music is superior to the film for me. :)
I'll definitely have to see the film again in 1080 with a nice setup to get that proper experience of both.

Ah ok then thanks for clearing it up for me. I pretty much agree with your first statement then. Although boy you must really love the soundtrack if you're liking it more than the actual film. Do watch it again, literally nothing bad can come from this.
seriously though, the soundtrack really is dynamite. Really opened up world music for me.

Yeah at first I wasn't really into the soundtrack but now, once you allow it to work its magic, it really makes the film so much better.
so you're afraid of jesus but not of willem dafoe.. makes sense
wait a minute TheFilmSlacker didn't you already see Last Temptation?
[sp] religious imagery, especially that of Christ is a very strange, but very potent phobia of mine. Can't explain it, but it's been there since childhood. [/sp]
I have a phobia of cherubs, those fat angel-children you see painted in the ceiling of churches.
Anyway, Sin city 9/10!
Spike Lee's oldboy seems to have done some prescreenings. Its out tomorrow in the US. its sitting on 4.3/10 and I figured oh I better tone down my expectations, but then i looked at the distribution

Cant say I can take that seriously at all :v: Probably just fans hating on it. I still think it looks good and I trust Spike Lee. hes great.
[editline]26th November 2013[/editline]
it takes a while for the demographics to kinda even out though. Always a massive amount of 10s and 1s and no inbetween.

It has 43% on RottenTomatoes, and I liked one review in particular:
If you've already seen and liked Chan-wook's film, there's no real reason to see this; if you've already seen and hated it, there are a hundred reasons to turn away.
Letterboxd has some more varied opinions.

I keep forgetting that letterboxd exists despite it being a really good website actually. I only go on it every once in a while. Im just used to using IMDb for rating films and checking them out and stuff. I guess though for actual info imdb is one of the best sites on the web. community wise it sucks though.
I'm still gonna see Oldboy and am hopeful and open to it being very good but not gonna be too disappointed if it's boring or just bad. I dont expect it to be shit.
Im a fan of the original and like it a lot but its not one of my alltime favourites or anything. (Sympathy For Mr Vengeance, the first in Park Chan Wook's trilogy, is miles better than Oldboy imo)
fuck imdb fuck rotten tomatoes, bring on a remake..
People focus far into it being a remake rather than just what it is as its own film, so I don't trust any of those "pre-critic" reviews just yet..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unforgiven_(2013_film)
This is a remake that didn't need to be but hell yes I will see this..
I guess it's payback for remaking yojimbo :v:

I actually only visit it to add some newly watched film or to put something on watchlist. And when I'm there I'll read two or three random reviews, that's all.
I still can't make myself to write reviews.
Man of Steel
I think Zack Snyder has something against buildings because a lot of them fall over in this movie. Seriously though it was pretty meh; the whole start of the movie felt really disjointed and sloppy, then the rest was just action action action with no character development and little plot.
Superman is overpowered, which I think they said they tried to address. He thwarts the bad guys twice by simply flying into their evil machines and/or shooting lazers from his eyes. The action went on to long and was gratuitous to say the least, it tried to fit too much into one movie, the characters were underdeveloped and the bad guys' plan was pretty shit. On the good side though the designs of Zod and his cronies' armour looked nice (so did most of the alien tech) and Michael Shannon gave a good performance.
also there were too many snap zooms, i hate snap zooms
6/10

I never bother for writing reviews except from my summaries and stuff here. It feels too much like work to write proper stuff about films. I save that for college essays. I write about films for pleasure :v: (although I do really enjoy analysing films and stuff. But mostly only if I have to. I'm not gonna write 2000 words on a film just cos.)
I enjoy just talking a bit about what I liked and disliked and mentioning favourite parts and all that. Its nice to be able to say it. But yeah it's not the kind of stuff I consider reviews and wouldn't submit it to letterboxd or imdb or whatever. I just rate on imdb/letterboxd (and on letterboxd I follow my arbitrary rule of no half stars which I also employ here, because giving half stars is like using ~/10 instead of 5 stars :v:)
