shia la boof is gonna be the next gen clint eastwood
He seems to be reinventing his career, which I guess is a good thing.
Jeez, it feels like in 5-10 years people will have completely forgotten Shia's roles as "the guy who screams 'nonononononononono!' a lot".
just watched Julien Donkey-Boy and basically

I give it 3/5.
Starts off weak and continues as the same. It's not shit but although it's a continuous story it's mostly vignettes, and I didn't really connect right away so there was little motivation to watch. But the last 20 or so minutes are incredibly powerful and I realised that I was actually quite attached to everyone involved. It was the scene in the icerink that turned the film around for me. Like not even the pivotal moment there- just that ice skating featured pretty predominantly in the film up til then and given Chloe Sevigny's situation, what was going on and what had happened I had a horrible gut feeling the entire time and honestly when [sp]She falls and starts screaming/crying[/sp] I felt pretty sick. Like I was properly shook. And as the film progressed that feeling stayed. Like for a good 15 minutes. And then I just sat and watched the credits because I was still reeling it in.
I think this is definitely a film for the rewatch category. I love Harmony Korine and to me he's one of the best, most innovative and important directors of the past 20 years. Although I didn't connect with Julien Donkey-Boy right away, like I did Gummo (I was entranced from beginning to end with Gummo. Definitely one of my favourite films.) I feel in retrospect the film is better than I thought while watching it, so now that I understand it more I think I will appreciate it and enjoy it much more. I think I will love this film soon.
[editline]1st December 2013[/editline]
Chloe Sevigny gives some great bits of strong performance although a lot of the time her role isn't that demanding except from the end where she seriously brings in a powerhouse performance. Ewen Bremner, who is Julien, is perfect. The character is schizophrenic and lives under his abusive father (Werner Herzog) and his brother who doesn't care or understand him. His performance is very real.
I also feel like this film was incredibly realistic as well. It didn't exaggerate or glorify or Hollywood up schizophrenia or anything with stupid obvious shit. It's never even said in the film that Julien suffers from schizophrenia. You just work it out by watching, putting things together and realising (one of the reasons I think this film will be better on round 2) The family is totally dysfunctional and it feels really real. It's not just shouting and hitting and all that shit but it's subtle (or blunt) degradation and insult from the abusive father played by Herzog and all that. Never complimenting, always putting people down. When the brother does something well Herzog changes it so he did it wrong. Cos Herzog wants to be the only winner. And all that stuff.
The use of handheld camcorder works for the feel, it gives it a real home video feel and the editing gets pretty crazy at points which works given our protagonist and the situations in the film.
There's a fair bit of analysis into what is what in this film but I'm not gonna ramble on about that. An interesting film worth checking out if you're able to withstand something pretty tough going and depressing and honestly really quite weird.
The Citizen (2012)
Lebanese man gets an opportunity at getting American citizenship and lands 2 days before 911. The ensueing story is rather predictable.
This stuff is so easy to write and make where the underdog takes on xenophobia, hypocracy and preconceptions. The soundtrack was shit and the direction and presentation felt a little TV movieish but for some reason I sort of enjoyed it. Maybe it was interesting to see an American film taking on a topic like this. Not a classic by any means but mildly enjoyable.
Rusty, or Edward, you mind if I call you Edward? I was on Skype this week with a few contacts I used to work on websites with when one of the FP mods came on for a while who we've not spoken to in a long time. I was told about your meltdown in the staff area here and that its all getting rather funny which is why the IP ban on my location has been kept off. This whole spat seems to be consuming you and I'm really not worth it. You're even wiping my accounts in the middle of the night your local time which tells me this has become an obssession.
I'll come on usually just after I've watched something so I can express it, this makes me feel good. When I wander off the forum, Facepunch is behind me and I'm not thinking about some jumped up little brat who lives in his bedroom showing me whose boss. Facepunch is a great forum but the real world is a much better place. I mean this well Edward, your energy could be spent much better. Regards, Alex XXX.

That ending was pretty incredible. Dark as hell though, definitely a heavy movie.
9/10
wow this new info is mindbending
can i call rusty, ted instead?
Im gonna try posting here. Family picked up a random movie from our local rental store.
Pacific Rim (2013)
Overall I'd say 6/10
The plot is predictable, and the characters are pretty one dimensional. Most problems between the characters either just vanish, or are solved in a manner that makes you think "Well that was easy".
This movie is enjoyable as long as you don't pay attention to the plot or details. However if you look at all its details, everything really just falls apart.
They equip their giant robots with a sword that can effortlessly cut through the Monsters that terrorize their cities, and yet they use it so sparingly, yet don't mind wasting missiles. The robots can function just fine underwater, but a scene is shown where the pilots are suffering from loss of oxygen from being pushed too high into the sky.
However, visually this movie is gorgeous. Probably the best part of the movie was the giant robot fights.
Also, I wasn't able to not think about Gurren Lagann while watching it. Im not sure if thats a plus or a minus.

I was wondering about that, too. When I rewatched the film I kept an eye out for the combat techniques.
In the final battle of the movie, Raleigh immediately draws the sword on his arm. However, before he can get to slicin' and dicin', a kaiju comes barreling in and rips that arm off. Mako later splits a kaiju with her sword, but it's clear that that weapon is a gamble to use.
Additionally, Del Toro constantly described the purpose of the Jaegers as something that can "grapple" with the monsters. Consider how Striker fights off the kaiju in Australia - rather than slicing it in two, it punches it around to weaken it and move it around, then blasts at it with its chest cannons. Kaiju are very physical brawlers - recall how the two jumped on Cherno - and as such the raw power of fists and plasma weapons are much better than delicate, precise swordplay.

I feel like I should give you a box rating, but I really don't want to call you dumb. Not by a long shot.
basically it's the best dumb movie of the year
Agreed. This summarizes it perfectly.
this one does have an explanation though, the fact that the kaiju have toxic blood and all that
So they want to blow it up instead, causing the blood to fly everywhere. Instead of just cut its head off and have a manageable mess.
And you think they'd use that metal on their rockets, knuckles when punching. But instead they choose not to use it until Hong Kong is half destroyed.
Theres really no way to save its plot. Most elements it introduces either just vanish, or have no real point. So I'll just enjoy it for the gorgeous mech fights.

Shia LeBeouf is starring in a film thats out in January and it looks great
[editline]1st December 2013[/editline]
I feel like Shia LeBeouf is gonna be a director. Not Kevin Costner/Ben Affleck style career change I can just see him making an indie feature like James Franco/JGL. I think it'd be a pretty daring and interesting film. I love his attitude.
he's already started a directorial career, did an indie film called maniac with kid cudi a few years ago
it's surprisingly good. lebouf also cameos in as the cameraman.
slight spoiler, it's akin to that venom short that came out a few months back.

except the explosives they use are nowhere near powerful enough to blow the kaiju to bits. you can see that in the sydney (?) fight where they're more of a blunt force trauma thing
besides its not like there's a special metal in the sword or anything, i dont know where you got that from

Whatever i find it entertaining to pass my bus travel
Its the little things in life
iron sky - it was honestly mostly just awkward to watch. it wasn't funny at all and the plot was stupid. i regret watching it
Nosferatu The Vampyre- 5/5
Wow. What a film. This is a total masterpiece of cinema. Werner Herzog's remake of the 1922 classic Nosferatu is an improvement in every single way- and the original is nothing short of great in itself. From the utterly stunning art direction and cinematography, to one of the best soundtracks I've heard along with incredible and effective and emotive sound design, to Klaus Kinski's breathtaking performance... This is just brilliant. Maybe the best horror film I have ever seen.
I never really "got" Herzog's earlier drama films although I definitely admired and appreciated them. Aguirre was to me a bit boring although very interesting and Aguirre was an excellent character, and some scenes were haunting and beautiful and I really connected with a couple parts. Same for Kaspar Hauser. This is my fourth Herzog film (Bad Lieutenant being the other- a film I also consider excellent)
But now upon watching this and just loving every second, I realise Herzog's style and I now understand it. I think I must rewatch Aguirre and Kaspar Hauser as well as delve much deeper into his filmography because by proxy of Nosferatu those two films have become much better in my mind since I know what Herzog does.
Truly a work of art and a beautiful and haunting masterpiece. One of my new favourite films. I gave this 10/10 on IMDb. It's the fifth film to claim a perfect score on IMDb from me.

My russian friend brought me along to watch it in theaters. I don't remember much about the film except that I found it boring and tedious but I will remember that one moment when Russia's space vehicle comes out. Not because it was cool or anything but my friend literally fucking stood up and saluted when it happened.
He was a weird guy.
One of the best films I've ever seen and I encourage everyone to watch it.

kimchimafia you are a sneaky man also I enjoyed Iron sky but I was drunk and with friends when I saw it so my opinion on it is pretty worthless
Iron Sky
I remember the funding for this was sort of like crowdfunding before it took off and that was something I found interesting at the time. I also remember the backlash when it came out which put me off. I do however find the whole Nazi thing rather funny so I decided to try it with an open mind....... Aryan serums, mobile phone batteries and a story that must have took 5 seconds to think up. Fuck me, that was bad, really bad and totally unfunny. The so bad it's good never really washed with me so fuck this film.

So the mod was lying? I don't think so Edward, he seemed very sure about what he told me. You have a look into that IP ban you claim to know nothing about, good luck with that. You smell of fear Edward which is why you're getting up in the middle of the night to wipe my content.

Max Payne - 2/10
God! Fucking! Dammit! I can write a book about how awful this movie is!
There's precisely one thing I like about this movie, ONE, and that's the visual design. The whole color palette of the movie does a decent job at replicating the film noir style of the original game.
Now that that's over with, here's what I HATE about this movie.
There's a good few people who look nothing like they do in the game. Max, Mona, Jack Lupino, Nicole Horne, they're portrayed well enough. BB is played by Beau Bridges of all people, Alex Balder looks less like a policeman and more like a hobo and Jim Bravura is played by fucking Ludacris! Ludacris! It's like they decided to go for the biggest casting joke they could think of!
It only very loosely resembles the original game. There's a few elements that remain like the murder of Max's family, Valkyr's history, that sort of thing but here's a list of things and people and how they are misrepresented in the movie:
[sp]BB[/sp]is the big bad guy, Nicole Horne has maybe 2 scenes in the entire movie, Alex Balder's role in Max's life is grossly downplayed (as are[sp]the effects of his death on Max[/sp]), Lisa's character is fucking BUTCHERED and Lupino going insane and believing he's a messenger of hell is nowhere to be seen. Speaking of being nowhere to be seen, you know Don Punchinello, Vladimir Lem, Vinnie Gognitti, Alfred Woden, the Inner Circle and Ragna Rock? Tough shit, they're not even mentioned. And before you say anything, having Ragna Rock 'appear' by showing a building where half the neon letters don't work and thus spell the name doesn't fucking count.
There's also a few story changes for seemingly no apparent reason. Like how Max has been on the Cold Case unit ever since the murder of his wife and baby. Might seem minor but it makes the start of his involvement in the Valkyr affair about 10 times as clumsy as it needs to be. There's also Valkyr no longer being injected but taken orally (which I'm pretty sure is the slowest way for a drug to work). Or the fact that not only is[sp]BB[/sp]the major bad guy, the fucker actually sabotages his own plans TWICE in the space of 5 FUCKING MINUTES! First he[sp]shoots and kills Jack Lupino while the latter has Payne pinned to the ground and is right about to kill him[/sp]and then when[sp]he's trying to fake Max's death, he gives him a full vial of Valkyr to make it look like a drug overdose. Disregarding for a moment that 'having a full vial in your pocket = drug overdose' is least of all a stroke of genius, you're just ASSUMING he'll freeze to death when the guy has a vial that effectively turns him into Superman![/sp]
Then there's some minor but still worthwhile things like how there's an astounding 2 scenes with slo-mo, the theme song isn't heard once, none of the actors seemed to give a shit and vowed to bring it across in their acting and, strangely, while the action scenes themselves don't look half-bad, there's no music in them. There's music in the build-up scenes but nothing during the action scenes themselves.
Overall, I'm impressed. I knew Max Payne was bad but I didn't think it would be THIS bad. Utter waste of time, both for fans and non-fans of the franchise. Fuck you John Moore, fuck you!
