Having seen the film yes it us a spoiler
Falling Down 9/10 Fantastic story, actors, and acting. Was really good from start to finish.
Polytechnique (2008) Back in the late 80's a man named Marc Lepine shot up a poly because he hated women. This film is the dramatisation of that terrible day. Director of the awesome Incendes and Prisoners Dennis Villeneuve controls the delivery quite well. Very little is said and most of the story is told using scenes, facial expressions and actions. This film wasn't bad but the topic certainly hits hard as its a tale of a young man using the hatred of women as an excuse for his own insecurities and failure at life. Times have changed, women can work, run countries and match their male counterparts and this is just something some of the male population can't handle. Fortunately most men are happy to let the girls buy a drink, open the door themselves and compete on a level playing field. Can you cope with a girl telling you to go fuck yourself Edward? Why not take your inadequacies out on a classroom of girls and show the world how tough you are? The Illusionist This is everything 'Now you see me' should have been. Set in the time of the Habsburgs later period in the 1800's where forbidden love vs the establishment twists around the illusion of magic. It's one of those where you know how it will end but how it gets there is the illusion. Not a classic by any means but a well spent session in the company of Paul Giamatti and co. [editline]6th December 2013[/editline]
i think its amusing that the only decent posters for either of these marvel films are the ones w massive spoilers on them
Can the ending to a Marvel film be given away. The few I've seen always have the same story. Hero/hero's come up against enemy, nearly lose but fight back against the odds to overcome evil. Everybody backs an underdog and thats how they get people to route for them. One of these days they will let the bad guy win. There is a list of 10 films where the bad guys win, I must fish that out. Much love to the Butthurter, a real sweety on here. (User was permabanned for this post ("alt of jewdozer" - Rusty100))
Is there a point to rating your posts if Rustys just going to delete them?
nope
Re-watched the first Pirates of the Caribbean for the 20th time. 10/10 always
What do you mean by the first one? There are other ones? Its just like the Indiana Jones trilogy
Davey jones' chest or whatever is pretty good too. Or it was when I saw it on release, not rewatched it since. [editline]6th December 2013[/editline] I remember at worlds end being awful though, didn't bother with the fourth.
Is it as good as most of FP makes it out to be?
I don't think it is. Sure it's good, but I think it's very overrated.
anyone else looking forward to seeing Out of the Furnace? the cast has some really great actors in it: Christian Bale, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Woody Harrelson. it looks really good
Yeah, that looks quite interesting.
watched Baraka in 1080p last night.. ... I 'm trying to get words out but they won't work. Someone pls help.
The Family It's OK. I love gangster movies and have a soft spot for them, so for me it was a pleasant watch. 6.5/10
Frozen was yet again another good Disney movie. I dont know how they do it but damn there good at it. 8/10
Stand and Deliver.. I remember watching it in math class, and just had to go back and watch it because I remembered it being really good. And it's still pretty damn good to this day imo.
I saw Thor: The Dark World. It was pretty decent, definitely better than the first one. Thankfully, Kat Dennings' character had a lot less screentime this time around making the movie as a whole a much more enjoyable experience. (Seriously, I didn't even love to hate Darcy in Thor 1; I just hated her. Her character served absolutely no purpose and all she did was annoy me. At least she had some role to play this time around. She's the reason why I hated Thor 1 instead of thinking it was purely middle-of-the-road.) The big bad was kinda bland as far as bad guys go, but I'll admit that part of the reason why I thought he was boring was because he spoke in an alien language and I didn't get to watch with English subtitles so there were entire scenes where I had no idea what was happening. I can't really fault the film for that. He was a justification for Thor and Loki to get together and in that regard he succeeded and managed to feel threatening enough to give the events of the film enough gravity to work for me. It was fun seeing the dynamic between Loki and Thor, this is the first time I saw his character as a truly deceptive individual. In the first films that included him, his actual plans may have been murky but his ultimate motives have always been clear. This is the first time I saw him and was genuinely curious as to what his endgame was. [sp]Was he genuinely saddened by Frigga's death and actually want to get vengeance, did he orchestrate her death as evidenced by the line he gave to Algrim which in turn set into motion the events of the movie, or is it any number of possibilities?[/sp] His true motives and allegiances are unclear even by the end of the movie, [sp]especially considering how he regards Thor at the end, giving him the kind "I'm proud of you," words to Thor when he didn't need to at all and had already achieved his final goal; he seemed to give Thor the approval of his father that he always wanted even if he didn't need to.[/sp] You're never quite sure if Loki means what he says, is only saying what he says because it's convenient and expedient to achieve his own goals, or if it's a little bit of both. This time, Loki actually felt like a complex character. Finally, the action scenes, especially the final one, were very fun to watch. I can see how some might consider the final fight as kind of silly but it was definitely a bunch of fun for me. As a whole, I was surprised at the quality of this film as I expected it to be as bad as the first. I would not hesitate to recommend the film to fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and to fans of superhero movies in general. [editline]6th December 2013[/editline]
fucking marvel
The more I think about it, the more I wonder if this is more of a throwback to the events of The Avengers. [sp]Tony is shown as having some major PTSD throughout the whole film, this poster could symbolize Tony's state of mind. It looks almost like the scene in which he fell back to earth in NYC after he went through the wormhole apart from the fact that he obviously wasn't conscious, but also it could represent his declining state of mine as a result of the very event that nearly ended his life.[/sp]
Thankfully, Kat Dennings' character had a lot less screentime this time around making the movie as a whole a much more enjoyable experience. Yeah Kat dennings had more screen time in Dark World than the first one.
New World One of the best Korean films I have seen. 4 Yanbian hobos out of 5.
Kick-ass 2. It started out really strong and funny as all fuck, but then the last third of the movie (Spoilers obvs) [sp]was weird as hell, like the entire first part of the movie was lighthearted and funny but then they killed Jim Carreys character, motherfucker was about to rape night bitch and mother russia just starts mowing down cops, they kill kickasses dad and then they shoot up the funeral. It'd be like if Lamb Chop's Special Chanukah turned into a holocaust documentary in the last act with no warning whatsoever[/sp] I don't even know what i'd rate it. I still liked it though, and i'd tell someone to go watch it.
Y'know what was missing from mean girls? a gun that made Regina George shit and vomit at the same time If I had a djinn I'd wish that Kickass 2 never existed. It retroactively makes the original film worse simply by existing. The comic series was super fucking mean spirited, but at least the first movie toned that down a notch. The second one they just said fuck it, let's film this scene where he masturbates before attempting to rape this chick and go home $$$$ wait we can't have the bad guy die in the end, let's let him live $$$$ even though his characters arc is finished $$$$ let's have none of the superhero team matter, because they're literally just background noise for the main characters to fight to. Let's not have any of them team up, any of them die or get hurt, none of them put in any danger whatsoever, let's literally turn these characters into set dressing while we fight this russian chick. You could have taken out all the other superheroes in the movie and the final fight would play out just the same. let's retcon the entire relationship from the first movie off screen because he never got the girl in the comics at all, so why bother. It was funny in Super when Rainn Wilson's character beat people with a wrench in the name of justice. It's not funny in Kickass 2. Why? Because it's a lifeless husk of a film that tried to be SO MANY THINGS and failed at all of them. It wanted to be "look how hyperviolent and darkly funny this all is!" and it failed. It tried to be "Don't be afraid of being yourself!" and it failed. It tried to be "Vigilantism is cool!" but you CAN'T fucking do that because your source material paints all your characters as idiots and douchebags, it treats vigilantism as a joke, and everyone gets fucked over in the end due to it. They steered clear of that in the first movie. That sets Kickass 2 up to shit all over the bed. All the characters get fucked over, the two most likeable of them get murdered violently, but we still have that scene in the end where they look over the city as the sun rises, and they all say job well done :) :) :) No fuck you, you can't have that. You just spent 103 minutes detailing how fucking awful your main characters are, you're not allowed that scene. You missed all the heart that the original director tried to shove into the first film, and thought that just because this is a direct sequel, it'll have that same charm. Well guess what, it didn't. It was mean, it was stupid, and every character was a mean ol' shit. If you want to paint all your characters as assholes and idiots, pull an Always Sunny and relish in it. Don't try to throw in the feel good ending just because the first film had it. Let's combine Watchmen, Mean Girls, and Scott Pilgrim into one movie, grind it into a fine paste, and tuck it under our lips like chewing tobacco. Whatever we spit out we'll call Kick ass 2.
I watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind coming in thinking it was romantic comedy, and I knew the acclaim it gets everywhere so that was the only reason I watched it. I didn't look up anything about it or anything, went in blind. Maybe if you still haven't seen the film yet don't read the rest of my post, I'm not necessarily spoiling anything but my emotions may change what you'll think of the movie if you watch it. My feelings are conflicted right now. The movie was absolutely amazing, and I'm so glad I watched it, but wow I ended the movie feeling drained (didn't help that I started the movie at 1 am). God that was depressing. I'm mad about everything. Also I don't know if it's because of sleep deprivation or that I'm retarded, but I started interpreting the plot in completely dumb ways. Half way through the movie I was thinking that [sp]Carrey and Winslet were the same people as Ruffalo and Dunst because they acted similarly, then I thought Elijah Wood was Carrey because they were both in a relationship with Winslet, then I thought Wilkinson and Dunst were Carrey and Winslet (you can tell I started losing it at this point). Not at any point did I pay attention to Winslet's hair color, I just assumed it was a part of her free-spirit whatever thing going on.[/sp] I really should have watched this when I was more mentally stable [sp]or less of an idiot[/sp], I would have gotten more out of the actual movie than looking at summaries on wikipedia. And now I won't be able to go to sleep now because I'm still mad. I swear to god I thought that when people reviewed this movie on this thread before, they said it was happy. LOLNO
i have tried, just now, to watch Machete Kills i haven't made it an hour in and I can't watch any more. it's not bad on purpose funny. it's bad on purpose bad. it is like the writers do not have a single funny bone in them. there are no good lines, every sentence is a wasted opportunity. the characters are boring, the plot is uninteresting, and overall it's just very dull. i can't take how bad this is. robert rodriguez has long forgotten what made grindhouse movies good. it's their charm, their cheesiness with substance. ridiculous but simple storylines, not convoluted ones where machete does something because i don't know why and interacts with a new crazy woman because shes important or something ??? it's just a dull, unfunny shitshow. a perfect example of intentionally bad is Black Dynamite. that movie is a comedy goldmine. it's parody is perfect and it never misses a beat. machete just becomes the thing it's parodying, and an extra bad one at that. fuck machete and fuck robert rodriguez.
So same as the first movie then.
you're not supposed to watch it and feel like you're watching a seriously, seriously bad direct to dvd movie. you're supposed to watch it and think this thing is parodying a bad direct to dvd movie, with a lot more smarts. machete is just the former. IN FACT, i'm pretty sure that's not even what it's SUPPOSED to be parodying. which is grind house movies. which machete doesn't even feel like, it's really is more like a modern flop bad ass spy movie that went straight to dvd. god its just so awful. [editline]7th December 2013[/editline]
So same as the first movie then.
yes
"haha look how bad we are" type movies almost always are shit, redletter media is totally right about that. no difference between all of the shark movie crap from The Asylum and the Machete movies.
the thing is that they CAN be good but rarely are. planet terror was good, and as i mentioned so is black dynamite.
True. Plus those are more like tributes, especially Black Dynamite, they really researched their stuff, the writer of Black Dynamite is like a walking blacksploitation compendium. At least that what I read a while ago. Whereas the bad ones are mostly "lol lets make a bad movie" and Machete is pretty much the same with an added "and lets throw some celebrities in".
ugly washed up celebrities to boot
i actually rank Rodgriguez pretty highly. I think Rodriguez did well with the first Machete but Kills was yea not as good. I still thought it was fun and enjoyable but basically because it fell into its own trap of being legitimately bad but enjoyable because of that. The first Machete pulled off the whole parodying-bad-films-by-being-bad thing imo though. I think that you gotta respect him though whether or not you like him. His DIY ethic, originality and pioneering creativity are worth nothing less than respect regardless of your opinions on his movies. I like Robert Rodriguez as a director and think he's done some cool stuff and I really respect his ethic. The dude is a total icon of independent filmmaking. Even now he has a huge DIY attitude despite being a Hollywood director. (kinda. I'd say he's stayed clear of Hollywood but uses them when he needs to. He can get away with a lot more than most directors, working with Hollywood etc cos I think he knows how to use them) Often getting friends in his films, he does basically everything himself (writes, directs, shoots it himself, edits it himself, scores it himself). El Mariachi brought on waves of low budget indie films and stuff cos Rodriguez basically showed that it could be done when everyone was saying it couldn't. All you need is the right attitude and dedication. I mean, the dude sold his body to science to fund the film. And a whole lot of cost cutting and improvisation. He even wrote a successful book about the production of the film. I don't like the term auteur much as I think it demeans everyone but the director and if a director labels themselves as one they're straight up pretentious but i think Rodriguez is a prime example of a contemporary one. He also pioneered 3D when no one was doing it (I remember seeing Spy Kids 3D in the cinema. I'm sure it was the first time I saw a 3D movie and now 3D is a massive thing. Rodriguez was an influential kickstart to the 3D movement of right now.) Sharkboy and Lavagirl, another Rodriguez film was an early contributor. And with Sin City he pioneered yet another new way of making films- he did zero budget. He did 3d. With Sin City he did the first fully CGI/green screen stage feature film. It had never been done before and it brought on films like Tron: Legacy, Avatar (that's twice he pioneered something leading up to the highest grossing film of all time) etc. Say what you will about his films but the dude is a creative and original force in the filmmaking world and is highly influential even way outside his genre.
