Carrie (2013) 3/10
My girlfriend told me that the novel was actually quite decent but I haven't read it myself. Anyway we went to the cinema and I went in with an open mind but this movie is really bad. It has some decent moments but overall it's awful.
The pacing is sometimes far to fast or extremely slow, there is no mystery behind Carries power whatsoever, already in the first scene you discover unspectacularly that she has some secret telekinesis power. It's just boring and they wasted a lot of potential with that, there isn't much suspense at all. Furthermore the characters are so onedimensional and boring, it was really bad. Everyone behaves absolutely awful and not believable, characters are so superficial and unlikable. This is one of the few movies that doesn't even have one likeable character. There are other movies like that but they do a far greater job immersing yourself into these characters and give a reason for them to be like that, in this movie people are just assholes without a reason. This reminds me of another big issue with this movie, everything feels extremely artifical and fake, everyone looks just perfect and like topmodels of some sorts. It's just so unbelievable and takes a lot away from the movie, the acting was okay but it just lacked some good dialogues and depth. There were also a shitton of stereotypes
One of the things that was really notable during the end of the movie is that it shifted always from a drama story to a cheap horror, the end was pretty shocking compared to the first half of the movie but it was really cheap. I got some serious Silent Hill vibes which isn't really fitting for this movie at all, the end was just about gruesome kills for cheap thrills. The animated effects looked also really horrible, I really hoped that the movie didn't rely on to much special effects. Anyway I wouldn't recommend this movie at all, I haven't watched the 1976 version but apparently it's really good and it features John Travolta.
My girlfriend told me a lot about the book and more details, which made a lot more sense than the movie does. The movie gives off some hints but never explains anything really.

Third time seeing it and it's still great. Tons of fun, with great style and design. You can tell a lot of heart was put into it, and the result is a very enjoyable movie.
Shame we'll never see the extended version, though..
Even after the second time I was tired of it. I can't imagine watching it a third unless it's been a long time and I have the blu-ray.
Frankenhooker - 10/10
Exhilarating.

And here's the problem, too many remakes of great films. The reason the original was great was it had all those special things like Sissy Spaceks brilliant portrayal of an outcast in a school full of jocks with ......and all the rest of it. Why do they keep insisting on trying to recapture a classic with a modern interpretation? Oh yes I remember now, $$$$$$$$$$$.
Originality always wins.
I don't know if it's an remake. An article that I read stated that it was just a film version of the book instead of a remake. Nevertheless it's quite a bad one, it had some potential but it really fails at creating this realistic hostile remake against Carrie. Carrie looks actually really good and like nice person and all the mobbing towards her just feels unjustified and fake.
it most certainly is a remake. but yea its not very good at all even if it was an original film, made worse by the fact that the Brian DePalma film is really really good.
Also, I just watched Stalker. Eh. 3/5 I guess. I've heard a lot of praise for this film and for Tarkovsky in general but this is the first time I've actually watched any of his stuff. The film was as expected- long, slow, long takes, existential, not much action. But tbh I just didn't get it. It looked nice, was well directed and well acted and I didn't even feel like it dragged. I just didn't connect or understand what the point of the film was. I guess its something to do with hope and what you want/what you need? idk. I took basically nothing away from this film and i just watched 3 dudes walk around for 160 minutes.
I'm sure there's a lot to this film but I didn't really get any of it and I feel like the undertones are what would make a film like this great. But to me I just missed it. It wasn't a bad film though and I still plan on exploring Tarkovsky's filmography as maybe this film just wasn't for me. I enjoyed it visually and I enjoyed the idea of it- I think maybe I'll connect more with some of his other films.

I loved the way they handled the Zone though. Always an eerie sense of something bigger out there, something waiting to happen. It played out the way I thought in that [sp]nothing really did happen[/sp] but yea. It was cool. Also the sound design=top notch.
And can someone explain the ending? The bit with [sp]the kid pushing the glasses around with her mind[/sp] is it [sp]related to the Zone? How?[/sp]
And can someone explain the ending? The bit with [sp]the kid pushing the glasses around with her mind[/sp] is it [sp]related to the Zone? How?[/sp]
In the book it says that the children of stalkers are born mutated/crippled and I do believe it's also said in the movie as well. [sp]Her psychic powers are implied to exist due to her father's constant trips to the Zone which made her born not only as a cripple but a psychic too.[/sp]
I figured as much. I just feel like the film has more to it than its plot and I'm wondering what symbolically that means. Imo the film was very religious but I only got hints of it, I think a second viewing would benefit a lot.

A second viewing could definitely help. It does have a lot of religious themes in it but I think it includes many other things as well which are not strictly tied with religion. I don't want to sound like some pretentious asshole and then claim I know 'the true meaning' behind Stalker but I don't think I could even if I wanted to.
If Stalker doesn't work out, Solaris should work better for you.
[editline]8th December 2013[/editline]
But yeah, Stalker's plot isn't anything really 'amazing' because essentially it's just three dudes who walk around some places and then come back. I can't say exactly why right now probably because I'm tired as shit, I must agree the film has more to offer than its simple plot.
Even after the second time I was tired of it. I can't imagine watching it a third unless it's been a long time and I have the blu-ray.
I can see why you might feel that way.
For me, the appeal is in the production design. I really like the "used" look of everything - because it's nearing the end of the Kaiju War - and how things look slightly futuristic but are still tangible. I love the different settings and color schemes. Ideas like the "bone slums" where people live around the skeleton of a kaiju, or concepts like a black market of kaiju snake oil are clever and well-realized. I enjoy the characters, their amazing names, and their cool costumes (see: Ron Perlman). And, of course, the fight scenes. Sometimes the pacing is poor (and I wish the 20-second Sydney fight wasn't the only one in daytime) but it's always fun to see Otachi keep going and going in crazy ways.

Anyways, after we saw Pacific Rim my buddy mentioned "that one gif where the guy does a thumbs-up in lava" and I realized that he hadn't seen any Terminator movies. We're planning to watch them soon - he doesn't know much about them besides "Arnold travels through time to save the future or something" - but I only have a copy of Terminator 2.
Now, I saw T2 before The Terminator and was fine. But should we seek out a copy of the first movie so as to watch them in order?
just watched Spring Breakers again I have now seen it four times. I bought it on DVD last Wednesday after seeing it twice in the cinema. Watched it on Thursday with Directors Commentary which was excellent, a great and different way to watch it. Only time I've ever watched a director's commentary except from Tropic Thunder which was mostly just to hear RDJr still in character :v:. Watched it again now having a slightly different perspective from the commentary. Well more, I think some stuff made more sense/had more depth to it.
I love this film and I think it's one of the best of the year as well as one of my favourite films.
Maniac
This is a movie about a city where people put mirrors above their beds, where everyone conveniently disappears whenever someone is being chased by a murderer, where piece of shit cars go from naught to sixty in under a second and where [sp]people accuse you of murder for knowing where somebody lives. [/sp]
I really liked it.
saw the book thief
as the title implies, theres not actually much book theiving, but it is a very well done movie if you have played through the stanley parable before, you will instantly understand where this movie is going after hearing Kevan Brighting start his speech...
it went out of its way to portray the war from the german civilian's side, from the mid 30s all the way through, not nearly as much nazism as you would expect, but very much a movie that gets darker and darker as it goes along and the cast of characters dwindles as conscription sets in, made worse by knowing where the men would be headed just by the date

...So it's about the illusion of free will in modern videogaming?
I loved Pacific Rim 9/10. Elbow Rocket was my favorite.

You probably should, but really, I don't think it would make much of a difference. Like yourself, I saw T2 before the first one, and it didn't really change all that much.

The sense of scale and weight is fantastic.

Well a big part of T2 was the shock of the T-800 being a good guy, but then again everyone already knows that so I guess it's unavoidable.
I bought the RiffTrax for The Avengers.
It was definitely very funny, but there's not much to talk about that you don't already know; The guys MST a bunch of movies and laughs are had. It was definitely worth the $4 I paid for it. Pick it up if you like that sort of thing.

If I was allowed to rate the Rifftrax for movies I've seen, I'd have taken up several dozen pages talking about it. Rifftrax is the best thing on the web.
finally got around to seeing this

9/10 god damn that was fantastic.
Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies
3/10
It wasn't as terrible as some other Asylum films but it was still god damn shit ass fuck.

I dunno, man. I thought this movie was fantastic, then the ending happened and pretty much ruined the entire thing for me.
I dunno, man. I thought this movie was fantastic, then the ending happened and pretty much ruined the entire thing for me.
[sp]The very title was kind of pointing to that ending already, especially with that tagline.[/sp]
I still thought the ending was great, it had a lot of impact.
It's not WHAT happened in the ending, but HOW it was all presented.
[sp]Cop gets shot, partner is cradling the body. Audience presumes death. Badguys unload AK47's into the partners back, killing him. Then, out of the blue, a ton of other cops show up just to wipe out the badguys. Cut to funeral, where we learn that Cop survived the entire thing.[/sp]
The ending just felt like a compromise between execs at the studio. [sp]Okay, I'll let you kill ONE of the cops, as long as the badguys get killed as well. [/sp]
It felt like the ending to a different movie.

It felt like the right ending to me... I don't know how the film could have been better without the ending it needed.
Without the ending, it would have been much lesser film.
End of Watch was good but maybe the ending was a bit hammy in that last bit. [sp] Would it have been better if they had both been killed with no funeral speeches?[/sp]
The 70's was a golden age of cinema and it wasn't odd to have your characters get killed and roll the credits in silence. That said it was what it was and thats ok.
If they [sp] both died and the credits rolled [/sp], I personally think it would have been more powerful. I'm a huge fan of abrupt endings like that. I think Reservoir Dogs did it best, though. Then again, I haven't seen very many movies that had balls enough to do an ending like that.
Mean streets and a good handful of films from the 70's. Directors back then didn't feel the need to tie it all up in a nice little bow so you leave the cinema feeling warm and fuzzy. Deer Hunter was another heart killer.
[sp]considering they both had children, at least one of them needed to live, especially the way things were foreshadowing. not saying that it always goes like that in real life but i wanted at least a somewhat happy ending.[/sp]
Good films where the bad guy wins or the hero dies:
[sp]Arlington road
Seven
Melancholia (planet pwnt everybody)[/sp]
