Watched Elysium not too long ago and actually kinda liked it.
My friend told me there was a District 9 easter egg near the end of the movie. Is that true?
I looked it up and all I've found was the film's tvtropes page, no pictures or anything.
Elysium was good but just not great like we were all expecting it to be.
Couple of films over the last few:
Stay
Decent flick, one that went unnoticed, actually it was a total flop in terms of business. You'd think with such a cast, you'd have a bit more of a solid feedback.
Anyway, you've got a pretty intriguing bit of psych drama here. Many think it's kind of empty and drawn out, while I think there's something quite solid going on. It's not trying to be like a David Lynch film at all, rather than delving every which way, you've got some meaning between the lines. This probably won't mean much but I'd say it's a gem, with lots of existential issues being questioned.
A nice one for the Gosling canon too, he may be a bit samey to folk but I think he really is terrific.
For a film with 26 fucking percent on Rotten Tomatoes, you'd think you were in for a Transformers 2 palaver, but this was nothing like I expected at all. Very skilful and in ways quite genuine tbh.
Black (ब्लैक)
An Indian film which doesn't boil you on the inside with 3 hours of song and dance. Instead it tackles a real heartbreaking life, someone's whose deaf and blind. We have the forever famous Amitabh as the teacher, who reminded me on the off as an Indian Hugh Laurie (playing House ofc). As it progresses it's a lot more a peril of getting to grips with life when a person is brought to such an unfair disadvantage before they've even begun.
What makes this film more meaningful is the fact that it doesn't just tackle that path but goes the other way too. May seem clichéd but for an Indian film which for once goes on its own steam rather than drawing off all the western styles, it does something quite creative for a change. I liked it a lot tbh.
Tootsie
Hoffman is the man... jesus, I can't even comprehend how he managed to do this. It's hilarious but in an odd way it's quite sweet and filled with heart. I just can't unsee what I just watched, just the craziest thing to witness...
Gonna watch "Love Actually" pretty soon for the first time. Seems like the right time of year to watch it and I hear that it's very good.
Don't do eeeet.
Says me sat here watching Battle Los Angeles. I've got too far in to switch off but I hate this film.
Fuck that was bad.....
Love Actually is a sap of a film but it's the okay mainstream sap :]
Wouldn't watch it again..

I'd give it an 8/10 but it was obviously below District 9, I think Blomkamp focused too much on the socio-political aspect and not enough of the sci-fi parts.
Also watched Love Actually earlier tonight. It's definitely my favourite Christmas movie even if it is cheesy.
Elysium 6/10

for some reason I loved watching that movie. It was really heart warming
time for a few quick reviews of cheesy movies
Star Trek: Into Darkness
A little too cheesy, I'd say. Some of the lines were unbelievably cringe worthy, but the story itself fit the style well enough that it didn't seem too bad. Pretty disappointing compared to the 2009 one.
Fast & Furious 6
Doesn't even come close to Fast Five but it's still a decent action movie. Unlike Star Trek, the amount of cheesiness on this one was expected. The fact that it doesn't try to come off as deeper or smarter than it actually is is a relief, and makes it much more enjoyable.
Avengers (rewatch)
Loved it. For the kind of movie it is, it's actually pretty clever, with plenty of witty dialogue and some interesting cinematography (I'd like to say unique but it wasn't always the case). It might be a little overrated, but it doesn't even come close to being bad, and even the people who don't like it have to admit that it accomplishes lots of things that are often seen as the main problems of superhero movies in general, such as putting lots of different, colorful and unique characters on-screen like that and having it not be a clusterfuck. My fanboyism may be clouding my judgement but boy, do I love this movie.
The Amazing Spider-Man (rewatch)
I'd be lying if I said I didn't like it, but I'd be an idiot not to see the obvious flaws this movie has. Poorly thought out characters, really meh writing... It just screams mediocre, any way you look at it. I'd say it's better than Spider-Man 3 from a more technical standpoint, but even that movie has more heart than this. I recommend it if you have nothing better to do or if you're just a curious fan.
Catching Fire
Meh/10. Never liked the second and third books anyway. Decent adaptation of a mediocre book.
Watching Frozen right now. I have high hopes for it.
[editline]9th December 2013[/editline]
Finished Frozen - 9/10. Beautiful visuals and cinematics, music kind of killed it for me.. GREAT movie though, would definitely recommend.
GI Joe Retaliantniomn
The entire city of London gets blown up but nobody cares and it's never spoken of again. It's the epitome of a lazy cash-grab. I didn't like it.

I maintain that The Avengers is the best Hulk movie to date.
I maintain that The Avengers is the best Hulk movie to date.
Considering all he had was 'Hulk' and 'The Incredible Hulk' (live-action movies), it's not much of a competition.
I just watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
I cried happy tears, two whole happy tears. Holy cow I didn't expect a movie that was that warped and sad to have an ending that could feel rewarding. It illustrated a concept I'd only ever been assured was true. The kind of thing that makes you go from feeling like you should believe something to actually believing it. If that's not a ten out of ten movie I don't know what is.

I saw that ages ago and really didn't like it but expected to love it. Maybe a rewatch is in order.

So... it's about popularity, and in no way about quality. So why writing "Top User Rated Movies"? Why not "Most Popular Movies"?
Carrie (1976)
I didn't really enjoy it so much. I can understand how it might have been somewhat shocking at the time, but it just felt average. It's definetly creepy, also disturbing in some parts (especially seeing the 1970s prom night outfits. oh god).

I actually saw this too a few days ago. I thought everything up until she went mental was great. Everything after was kinda bad, partly due to its age.
Well the prom massacre isn't any better in the new movie either, pretty lame and filled with bad effects. Also the ending doesn't make any sense at all, it seemed like they tried to create a alternative ending and taking parts of the book which didn't match up at all.
Spoilers about the ending.
[sp]At the end of the remake Carrie simply kills herself while holding her mother in her arms at her house by giant boulders and pebbles that crash into the house, also she told Sue that she was pregnent and rescued her from the house.
Now this is absolutely different from the book and doesn't make any sense at all. First off Carrie never seemed like a person who would commit suicide. Actually from the whole movie you get the idea that Carrie really wants to discover life and fight for her beliefs. Even with the loss of her mother, I don't think that she would kill herself like that. The thing with the Pebbles is also totally out of place and unexplained. In the novel there was once a mysterious incident where it rained pebbles on their house due to Carries telekinesis, although she wasn't aware that it was her doing. That last scene with the boulders was just introduced without any explanation whatsoever.
Furthermore the whole thing with Sue and the pregnancy had no fucking reason at all, there was literally no purpose.
In the novel Carrie dies due to the side effects of her powers, she dies from incredibly painful headaches during the next morning after the massacre. She dies peacefully next to a tree, which gave off a really nice vibe.
I guess that wasn't cinematic enough after the whole massacre thing for the remake. I can't stress enough how bad this movie actually is.[/sp]
Carrie has the greatest jump scare of all time in it imo. Well its tied with Mullholland Drive.
[editline]10th December 2013[/editline]
also the 2013 Carrie's ending from the [sp]prom massacre[/sp] onwards is complete and utter garbage
Lets not forget how big of a failure the casting of the main charater and how all over the place the tone of the movie is.
Silver Linings Playbook
I expected not to like this and how wrong I was. Intelligent rom com with some original delivery. De Niro was on fine form for this and its been a while since I remember seeing him perform well. Jen Lawrence was excellent.
I just don't get why guys like Lawrence because her chin slopes and her nose looks broken, Cooper however is another matter.

Honestly I found that she did a good job, the acting was actually decent enough. Although she isn't that representative of Carrie at all.
Carrie has the greatest jump scare of all time in it imo.
What jump scare? [sp]the hand at the end? Because I saw that coming a mile away, but I'm sure that's because it's been done so many times since. I guess at the time it would have been shit scary.[/sp]
Submarino - 7.9/10
from Thomas Vinterberg, the director of Jagten (The Hunt), and cowriter Tobias Lindholm, these 2 guys make fan-fuckin-tastic drama movies. I sincerely hope they make more movies together.
The movie is about two self-destructive brothers both struggling with their lives in their own ways after a disturbing and abusive youth that still haunts them to this day.
The movie takes enough time to tell you all you need to know about both of them seperately and around halfway the movie brings both depressing sides together.
And it really is depressing, similairly to Requiem for a Dream in ways (and better imo i never really liked Requiem for a dream that much)

Yeah that shit catches me every time. Its perfectly done imo. Its a bit obvious especially now but very effective.
