I don't know why people (even those who liked Pacific Rim) say that all the characters were terrible. Sure, there are some weak points (for instance, Hunnam is not nearly charismatic enough to carry this movie) but I found them to be more simplistic than outright bad. There are a lot of archetypes/stereotypes, but we really get a stronger sense of the characters. Off the top of my head, I really enjoyed the performances of Elba, Day, Gorman, Perlman, and Kikuchi. Would I have liked it to be better fleshed out? Of course, I'd love to see Chuck Hansen get a more defined character arc, or have a stronger emotional performance for Raleigh Beckett. But what I got wasn't really all that bad.
"It's just robots fighting monsters" isn't that good of an excuse - the jaegers are not sentient so we do care about the men and women piloting them.
also:
Del Toro cut approximately an hour of material from the film. The unused footage explored the characters and their arcs in greater detail, but the director felt it was necessary to strike a balance, stating: "We cannot pretend this is Ibsen with monsters and giant robots. I cannot pretend I'm doing a profound reflection on mankind." Each character's arc was edited down to its minimal requirements.[39] The director wanted to keep the film around two hours, particularly for younger viewers. Alejandro González Iñárritu and Alfonso Cuarón helped with the editing; Iñárritu removed ten minutes of footage, while Cuarón removed "a few minutes" and rearranged several scenes.[63] Iñárritu and Cuarón receive a "special thanks" in the film's credits, as do James Cameron and David Cronenberg.
Olympus Has Fallen- 2013
Meh, I would have given it a 5
But it has Morgan Freeman in it so I'll raise it to a 6/10
You can't be serious.
About what? The hypothesis or calling Pacific Rim my favorite film? The hypothesis is just a hypothesis, I'm semi-serious but it kinda makes sense in my head, knowing how Kaiju and Mecha movies usually are. As for calling it my favorite film, I'm dead fucking serious.

So, I guess you'd give Dreamcatcher a 1/10?
i saw 2 movies
x men 3, dont like
dredd (2012), like
Sin City - 9/10
I hope the sequel will be good too.
Die Hard - 9.5/10 best christmas movie.
Rush (2013)
Great film about those 2 rivals. The power of the cars and the differing mentality of the 2 men are very well portrayed by Hemsworth and the consistantly great Bruhl. A good deal of their history together was missed out such as the 2 of them sharing a London flat but then again that would have watered down the competitive spin of the story. These things are not about a perfect retelling of history but using something real and dramatising it for our enjoyment and for me it succeeded. This was a very good film.

3 colours white (1994)
Part 2 of the colours trilogy is a bigger hitter than the preceeding blue imo. It's lighter and easier to follow but still has that depth and visual coherance that is central to its theme. At key points in the film white is used to good effect as was Blue and Red to hit home the circumstances of what the character is going through.
Zbigniew Zamachowski plays a Pole going through a divorce with his French wife in a court and the film is about his fortunes and how his experiences affect his behaviour towards others. It's a tale of love, revenge, morality, necessity and friendship. I always throught these films were French which they partly are but with the Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski at the helm it proves that Polish genius can beat the French art their own game. Such a shame this director died at 54.
Finally got around to watch Hot Fuzz with my brother. I loved Shaun but it took me some time to watch this one. I saw one trailer and I was a bit scared I wouldn't like it. That's why I always watched something else instead. After seeing though, I have to say I like it more than the zombie film.
Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead 11/10.
I'm convinced it was an anal fetish movie disguised as a zombie one.
Ghostbusters - 10 Bill Murray's out of 10.
Oldboy (2004) I don't know why I haven't watched this film earlier, it was pretty amazing. The ending twist was so good and I felt retarded for not seeing it coming. Amazing film.
9/10
In the house (2012)
French film about a literature teacher who has lost faith in his job because the average pupil he's trying to inspire is a meathead. Along comes Claude who keeps writing him a story about a fellow pupil and his family which relights his fire. The rest of the film is a blurred reality in his story vs whats actually going on. This film is absolutely brilliant because its multi-layered in terms of the potential 2 stories and also because of the performances of all concerned.
The only thing I have against the film is it's similarities to the writer/director François Ozon's other film 'The Swimming Pool'' but thats getting picky. Great film, highly recommend seeing this.
Whats looking to be the most anticipated film of 2014 in this thread?
Rewatched two movies I haven't seen in years.
Carlito's Way - 9/10.
Syriana - 10/10.
Syriana reminded me why I watch films so much I mean goddamn, it left me with such a feeling of longing. I really wish Stephen Gaghan would get back into writing and directing he's a fucking master.
Coincidentally both films ended on similar notes of characters not getting the retribution they deserve.

Nymphomaniac!

Gonna be completely honest here... Godzilla.
Total Recall (1990)
10 bulging eyes out of 10
The movie is old as me and I finally saw it from beginning to end. As a kid I always caught only parts of it. Pretty cool movie but I think a different main actor and slightly smaller focus on action would make it even more amazing. I wonder, I only heard bad stuff... Is the newer Total Recall worth a watch? I heard it has Kate Beckinsale and I absolutely hate her in movies.
The funny thing about this new character Tauriel is
Evangeline Lilly participated under the condition that her role in The Hobbit would not include a love triangle, and was surprised and displeased to discover in the after-production period that such a plot device had been actually added to the trilogy.
Jackson 1. Lilly 0.

it'd have to be interstellar for me
it'd have to be interstellar for me
It would be Godzilla for me, Godzilla is on the verge on being very good or a let down. I hope it doesn't come towards the latter.
The Wolf of Wall Street
4/5
Perhaps it would've been 5/5, but it started to drag near the end. It wasn't bad dragging, per se, it covered important info, but it still felt long. God, it was good though! It had me on my ass laughing during a lot of moments, particularly the Lemmon 714 scene.
Go see this movie. Just do it.
We're the Millers (2013)
My family watched this Christmas Eve night because we don't really like Christmas movies and because our last name is Miller (my mom picked it out). It was alright. For a modern contemporary comedy about a "kooky family" and drugs, it was ok. It won't go down as a classic must-see comedy, but it's certainly better than say an Adam Sandler movie. It's full of the typical stuff you'd expect in this kind of movie. It also has a bunch of pop culture references, which detracts from the movie a bit in my eye. Give it a watch I guess, see how you feel.
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
The best Romero film, and the best zombie film ever. The runtime is a bit over 2 hours, but you never feel the length. It's really nicely paced. I really like the beginning, not giving the viewer any information, just showing a bustling newsroom. It really gives a nice sense of urgency, even though the viewer doesn't really know what's going on yet. The shopping mall setting is nice and is a good setup for a bit of slapstick comedy. The social commentary that Romero was going for still holds up even 25 years after release. In conclusion, definitely watch it. This is one of the movies that everybody should see.
why does everyone hate iron man 3 so much?
i honestly didn't think it was a bad superhero movie, and compared to iron man 2 it was definitely way way better
it didnt blow my mind but at least there was a twist and the movie was well executed too
the whole ptsd thing also contributed a bit to the plot and character development, though imo it got a bit annoying sometimes
i'd give it a 8/10 in the super hero movie scale
how can YOU hate dredd so much??
The secret life of Walter Mitty.
Disappointed, because the first half of the movie was just a guy day dreaming everywhere which some of the scenes could have been shorter, but at least the other half was more interesting because it's about adventure.
Gravity - 4/5
I was surprised at how tense and interesting they could've made "two astronauts stranded in space" work. The cinematography was really well done as well
Dredd (2012) - 4/5
Really fun action movie with characters who are actually interesting. I loved the setting as well. Also, I didn't know how violent the movie was going to be (I went in pretty much blind) and I accidently invited a squeamish friend to watch it with me + some other friends :v
