Iron Man
8/10
I was really suprised by this movie, it's quite amazing even though I usually don't like movies with super heroes. Anyway it was charming, funny and had some really amazing scenes. It has also a lot of cool characters.
Because people got offended about their favorite Iron Man villain (that no one outside of comic nerds know of) turned out to be a pawn. I mean it's not like the comic and movie universes are different or anything like that.
So pretty much the same people who got super pissed that they changed the end of Watchmen to be less retarded than the book.
What's stupid is that this was Iron Man's archnemesis, basically his Joker.
You don't just hype the fuck out of that in trailers and then throw it away for a stupid gag, with a crappy rebound secondary villain with a throwaway line to clean it up. I'm not saying that the twist itself didn't work or was bad, it just didn't work the way it was supposed to. 80% of the film was still good imo.
Also you clearly didn't understand Watchmen's ending (the comic). In the absence of God, and two superpowers on the brink of the next great war, who the fuck would expect an attack from an extraterrestrial race in a huge metropolitan area? It gave the sense of "we are not alone" and that they were watching us. It made sense for Jon to also attack after his exodus from Earth, but it would have made more sense if he had just attacked America instead of the entire world imo, they could have still united.
Hell, in the Sam Hamm script the war actually starts before the attack on New York, one of the few things he improved upon.
and even if the villain didn't look like the true Mandarin to the comics, the character could of been a great adversary to Stark. Even the way Kingsley and Shane Black described the character
On his performance, Kingsley stated: "I wanted a voice that would disconcert a Western audience. I wanted a voice that would sound far more homegrown and familiar—a familiarity like a teacher's voice or a preacher's voice. The rhythms and tones of an earnest, almost benign, teacher—trying to educate people for their own good
Shane Black explains that Ben Kingsley's Mandarin is not Chinese in the film as he is in the comics in order to avoid the Fu Manchu stereotype: "We're not saying he's Chinese, we're saying he, in fact, draws a cloak around him of Chinese symbols and dragons because it represents his obsessions with Sun Tzu in various ancient arts of warfare that he studied." The filmmakers also cited Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now as an influence for the character
So basically a soldier turned terrorist who is obsessed with the general Sun Tzu and sees himself as a teacher towards his enemys, sounds like a good fucked up villain right there. (Even though Iron Man 3 didn't follow it's source material on the Extremis and Mandarin, I still liked the background and depth of the character that was given before the real thing came). Even then you would want to see Tony go to a hand-to-hand combat with the terrorist. (it would of most likely been katana fight in my imagination).
Casablanca - 10/10. Such a perfect movie, brilliant and sharp writing too, something that's rare to find nowadays.
Treasure Planet - 8/10
I've always held off watching this for some reason, no idea why, so I just decided to watch it on netflix today.
I thought it was great, glad I decided to give it a try.
Kick Ass 2 - 2/10
Holy shit this was bad. I don't know if this movie knows how bad it is and it's just parodying itself or nobody tried in this movie. It constantly points out the obvious with the dialogue, you can see everything coming a mile away that by the time it actually gets there you just want it to be over already. I'm not a girl but even I was offended with the scenes where Hit Girl was trying to be a normal girl. I was offended by a lot of things in this movie actually. The acting. Oh my god. What happened? They were decent in the first movie but it's like the actors knew the movie was so bad already that they just stopped trying. The only saving grace of this movie is Jim Carrey, god bless that man. This movie isn't funny either, it tries to be, but it fails every time. I can honestly tear this movie apart scene by scene, and it makes me sad because I really enjoyed the first one. I'm the nice guy, alright? I gave a lot of the movies that people hated on this year a thumbs up, but this one is just too much.
Whats looking to be the most anticipated film of 2014 in this thread?
Except all superhero movies, I'd go with Interstellar. But personally I also cannot wait for Grand Budapest Hotel, Exodus, Monuments Men, Child 44 and Gone Girl.
Casablanca - 10/10. Such a perfect movie, brilliant and sharp writing too, something that's rare to find nowadays.
Fact: there's no such thing as constructive criticism of Casablanca, this movie is perfect in every way, a timeless piece of art.
x-men first class 9 go fuck yourselves out of 10
First class owns
Also I forgot about the grand Budapest hotel that looks outstanding

I too am glad they twisted the mandarin because having never read the comics I thought he was shit and it would be so lame to keep this massively generic cliche of a villain as your main villain at the climax of this trilogy. Don't care how he is portrayed in the comics he was shit in the film. The real villain sucked too but at least he was portrayed by Guy Pearce which gets a lot of points cos he owns
yo both of those movies are very enjoyable despite being nothing special. calm your hate boners
[editline]29th December 2013[/editline]
oblivion was pretty shit though tbh

like tom cruise saw moon, but didn't understand why it was good and made a grandiose version of it

*star in. but i like to assume mega stars basically tell the director what to make.
quite frankly I did not find the IM3 enjoyable.. at all, but that's proobably just me. Okay, there were bits and pieces of enjoyable shit, but that's literally it.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)
Robert Downey Jnr stars as his usual sarcastic character with Val Kilmer as a worthy sidekick. Tits and ass is provided by Michelle Monaghan. The plot is very hard to follow as the focus seems to be on the one line quips of the 2 leading men as they insult each other throughout. At the end you just about come up to speed with whats actually happening. Quite entertaining but full of pointless scenes which for me just added to the confusion.
Can Downey jnr do anything else? Does he write his own lines? Either way he very good at it. Worth a watch for something a bit different in terms of how the story is told.

You didn't know?
RDJ plays RDJ in all of his movies
I really liked Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
:(
It was a good film, flawed in many ways on paper but you can overlook that if it entertains which it does.

The Turin Horse (2011)
Hungarian misery-fest about the owners of a horse who live around 130 years ago. Nothing more than the daily routine of human pigs who eat boiled potatoes with their hands and never speak to each other. I reject the directors view of what life was like back then, people didn't start conversing with each other on the invention of TV. The soundtrack to the film is a miserable 20 second loop that puts you in a ball begging for it to stop as is the sound FX for the gale, a fucking 5 second loop. The sets were total shit, back then they didn't have door handles and lever locks as we have them on wooden doors today and the clothing was clearly cheap shit bought from a charity shop. If a director is going to have a go at a film like this then do some fucking homework first.
I'm not sure what the purpose of this film is, maybe a test to see how long we could cope before switching it off. I got to the end and wish I hadn't started. This was a horrible, unrealistic experience.

When I watched the Turin Horse I wrote a really long post here about it. I took away that it was an apocalyptic film. Like literally the end of the world is happening around them, possibly brought on by the horse. From the first shot of the film the horse is depicted, imo, as otherworldly and mysterious. Two of the more in your face reasons for my theory is that, well, for one thing the storm is destroying the world probably, [sp]when they go to the city over the hill (which we never see) they go over and simply turn back because there is no city and it's been swallowed by the world (note that several people come from the direction of the city travelling)[/sp] and at the end when [sp]the horse dies and the world just goes dark because it's been swallowed up and it's all over[/sp]
There's a bunch more stuff throughout that hints at these things, like for instance the well dries up, and a load more that I can't think of. I loved the film personally although it took me about an hour to realise what it was. I do think though that understanding that makes the film much more interesting and a better watch because I too thought the film was pointless until about an hour in and it all clicked and everything made sense and suddenly I was fascinated.
I remember somebody posting about this one, I didn't realise it was you. It was clear that just one thing missing from their simple life would turn out catastrophic because of the simplicity of how they lived. My issue was that it took 2 and a half hours of impenitrable, repetitive misery to get me to realise that. I can deal with slow films about nothing but this was on another level. The point of the film was clear, I just was so worn down by the end that I didn't care.
Three Colours Red (1994)
Part 3 in Krzysztof Kieślowski's mesmerising trilogy is a wonderful end. Irene Jacob is the leading lady who has much more innocence than the focus of the previous 2 films which is key to the core of this tale. She feels pity, humanity, sees the good in people and gives of herself which is a stark contrast to the character she meets. The same symbolic tones and use of the colour red are used and reading up on the film after watching it really reveals the level of detail this thing has. These 3 films are a cinematic masterpiece.
Am I the only one watching films tonight?
Kick-Ass 2 - 6/10
Nowhere near as good as the first one. Some jokes nowhere near as funny. Some action scenes were lacking. Hit Girls 'Normalisation' was too long and cringeworthy at points. Needless side plots and poor use of some of the background characters.
That being said, I did really enjoy it. It was fun. Some of the shocks were great, the new characters were pretty fun (If underused), and the general feel and themes were quite strong, if not done near as well.
Man of Steel - 8/10
Loved it. It was pretty much a remake of Superman 1 & 2, with much more interesting villains and no fucking Lex Luther. I think the acting was pretty good for the most part, with some great no-nonsense fun scenes (The fight scenes, the villains motivation, the background history, a bearable Lois Lane). Even though there are the mandatory stupid scenes that dragged it down (The 'end of the world' plot and the fucking stupid 'omg hes so hot' bit), but certainly one of my favorite superhero films, probably it's because it had a lot of throwback.
Moonrise Kingdom- 9/10
Really loved this. The third Wes Anderson film I've seen although I barely remember the first at all (Darjeeling Limited. Saw it years ago) I did however really like Rushmore. This I think I liked even more, so for now it's my favourite WE film.
This is a film made by a 12 year old. Or at least, it's the film Wes Anderson has wanted to make since he was a 12 year old. I can tell. This film is told just like a 12 year old would, it's filmed with the naivete of a 12 year old, it has the colours and the fantasy and the imagery a 12 year old would think of, and it stars two 12 year olds who are in love and would do anything for each other because it's more important to them than anything else in the world. They're willing to give up everything to be together. They're willing to die to be together. Love in its purest form, found in a pair of preteens. There's a mirror here- the parents of Susie are not happy and the wife is cheating on him with the camp leader and not one of them really cares a whole lot, so I think this film is about the innocence and purity of the connections you build as a child. I think this is a true story. I reckon Wes Anderson fell for a girl while he was in the scouts and wanted to run away with her but he couldn't and it's something that stuck with him, so he made this film to let it out. And it's incredible.
One thing I liked about this film is that it tones down the quirks, which are dangerous in that they can be either enchanting or horribly annoying. Edward Norton is a lovely character, Bruce Willis tries, Bill Murray is a pent up neurotic... Harvey Keitel is great in what little time he has as a slightly but not ridiculously over the top Commander. His moustache is great. But aside that there's not... REALLY.. A whole lot to the adults- not just because it's not their film, but because (also why it seems like the love in the parents isn't much) is because it's totally the perspective of a 12 year old even away from Sam. See the treehouse near the start, or the way the boat sails. A 12 year old doesn't necessarily get all the complexities I guess, I mean yeah they feel them but they probably don't understand or realise. This is why Sam and Suzy fall in love and want to run away, because it's simple. They'll just go do it cos why not. They're in love. I do admire that, though. An adult wouldn't do that because you can think of the repercussions but that stops your adventurous thoughts- the "what if". Sam and Suzy both agree that they don't want to be tied down and they want to adventure forever. They probably wouldn't want to grow up.
Could go on but I won't cos I don't really have a point to make honestly. I thought this film was brilliant, really really great, and I thoroughly recommend it. A fantastic fairytale love story.
Oh, also saw the first Hunger Games.
Definitely one of the worst big budget films I've ever seen. Cookie Cutter Cardboard Cutout: The Movie
Hunger Games 1 sucked but Catching Fire was outstanding tbh

the step up in quality in literally all aspects is just crazy
the step up in quality in literally all aspects is just crazy
Did all those movie review magazines and newspapers have to invent a new ratings scale for it? I couldn't believe all the 4 & 5 star reviews.
[editline]29th December 2013[/editline]
Also mikeyt what did you disagree about in my other films I saw? Just interested is all.

The first Superman didn't jump back and forth between time periods and events in Clark Kent's life, and although there were some shifty moments, nothing was downright unbelievable.
Man of Steel pulled crap like [sp]Jonathon Kent dying from a tornado after breaking his leg to save a goddamn dog[/sp] and [sp]Lois Lane being in the plane carrying the deus ex machina device[/sp].
I thought Man of Steel was terrible. I agree with Kickass tho.
I'd give Hunger Games 2/5 and Catching Fire 4/5, it really was a great film and definitely the best blockbuster of the year.
You didn't know?

That's what makes it so great though.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was really good. If you thought RDJ and Val Kilmer insulting each other throughout the movie is pointless then the movie probably wasn't made for you.
Stalingrad (1993)
German film about the ill fated attack on the city and the ensuing retreat of the German army. We all know the story as its well documented. The human will to live is strong but nature and the overwhelming number of Russians ultimately beat them back. This wasn't a bad film as it follows a group of men and their desperation to just survive. The battle scenes I thought were a bit cheap and the scale of the invasion of Stalingrad was lost in a small filmset as big as a small industrial estate. Performances were ok so overall it was just about watchable.
My old boss should never have fought a war on 2 fronts.
Before Midnight- 9/10
I don't even want to write about this. For the past week I've followed Jesse and Celine over 18 years and it's just ended on an ambiguous and incredible note. So powerful and so fantastic. This is the best effort on the parts of Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy and Richard Linklater in the trilogy. A fantastic film but this is almost not a romance film. It's cruel and sad. But at the same time, it's such a real portrayal of a relationship. I realised some things that I had suspicions about too, which was interesting, as wel got to see more of their actual life this time.
Spoilers ahead:
Here's what I now think and I did kinda think similarly at the end of Sunset but wasn't so sure. I kinda feel mean saying it and I don't think it's fair or how I want it to go or anything like that at all, but I think they should break up. But then I don't because I think it could all work out. It's just so complex and so real that you cannot predict it. Humans are complicated and two together is even harder. I find myself thinking, their relationship has become become poisonous in a way. They didn't resolve their issues really at the end of it and they won't. Not properly at least. They'll just fight about it another day, and another, and they'll become Jesse's last relationship where they fought and never laughed and it'll be horrible for the children. I feel cynical for thinking it but I also feel like I'm being real about it. Jesse's a romantic but he's smart, Celine prides herself on being emotionally driven and being a woman and all that, and we finally get to see past her properly in this film -she would twist Jesse's words, she would manipulate him and make him feel bad, jumping to conclusions, not let Jesse be reasonable like he wanted- but then, she wasn't faking it in the first two or anything. They just know each other really well now so they have nothing to hide. They let it out and they talk about the deep stuff but not in a getting to know each other way like the first two. And it's not like their fight was over nothing- it was other their entire life together. It was a big thing.
But then I think, maybe this is good for them. it's good for them to get it all out there, rather than hold it in and resent each other without discussing it. They've always been open to talk. Maybe by getting it out there they will resolve it. Maybe not right there and then, but soon. I also think that, every couple fights. Overall they probably have a healthy relationship- Celine has pressures from being a mother while Jesse is away and resents him for it but that's understandable. He also resents her for keeping him away from Hank. No relationship is perfect. Jesse's the romantic, still clinging on, and Celine is melodramatic and pessimistic. But yeah, she's a drama queen. Maybe she's just doing it to keep stuff going. I'm sure she does mean what she says, but it's like, it's good to get it out. So she does. They're getting their baggage out on the table and working things out even if it's not very smoothly, but it's a tough and emotional issue so as much as Jesse wants to working it out rationally and unemotionally is not gonna happen.
I think, maybe, Sunset was the one I enjoyed the most and my favourite, but I think this is kinda the best. 10 years down the line this will be my favourite. I know it.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was better than expected. I thought the entire movie was gonna be just Ben Stiller daydreaming, but it really picked up in the middle. Really nice cinematography as well.
Hentai Kamen. 10/10
Best movie I've ever watched.
