Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie is one of the worst cartoons I've ever seen a 2/10 hands down
Starship Troopers: Pretty good Starship Troopers 2: Absolute shit, please make it stop Starship Troopers 3: Shit, but doesn't make me want to kill myself Starship Troopers: Invasion: Meh EDIT: I'm watching Invasion now, and I paused it to read a thread on reddit. Resumed and the first thing I hear is Johnny yelling "I'm coming!" Drunk me can't handle this.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was better than expected. I thought the entire movie was gonna be just Ben Stiller daydreaming, but it really picked up in the middle. Really nice cinematography as well.
Saw this one as well, I absolutely loved it. It was extremely refreshing from the usual flicks we've gotten the past year. Def going to be buying the soundtrack!
i really want to see that movie, but i probably won't be able to do it while it's still in theaters, which is a shame if it really has such great cinematography
Good Will Hunting. It was fucking amazing. The part where Sean kept repeating that it wasn't his fault ...
Is it some kind of rule that every Disney animated movie has to have two quirky non-human characters?
They always get thrown in to keep the younger kids entertained.
Fruitvale Station- 8/10 Really great little film that I missed earlier this year. I've been catching up on films from 2013, hence why I watched the Before Trilogy (wanted to see them anyway and figured now was a good time) and this won a bunch of things at BIFF so I figured yea I'll check it out- plus one of the film blogs I follow on tumblr raved about it for a while. Anyway, it was brilliant. It's based on the true story of Oscar Grant, a man killed by the police for a fight that broke out in a train on New Years. The film follows him through his last day of living, from waking up and taking his daughter to school to getting stuff for his mums birthday and celebrating it, to getting shot because someone started a fight with him. Now, Oscar is no saint, he was in prison twice and is a drug dealer (although struggling with the morality of it all) and has just lost his job for being unreliable but at heart he's trying to provide. He has no money, but he still buys things for his mum and offers to give a shopkeeper $10 to let his girlfriend use the bathroom because he's a giving person. I don't know how true to life this film is, but given that the writer-director lives in the area that this happened and heard about it since it happened, I imagine it's reasonably accurate. A brilliant emotional film with one of the best ending I've seen in a long time. Having just watched Before Midnight it pales but that ending is literally one of the best I've seen- no denying Fruitvale's power and I was on the edge of my seat, breathing slow, feeling panicked and tense the whole time. The scene with the cops holding them all down is definitely one of the best scenes of 2013. In fact this is one of of the best films of 2013 and I liked it a lot on all levels. As I said this is part of my 2013 catch-up, the rest of the films I'm going for are- Frances Ha (rewatch), The Great Beauty, Beyond The Hills, The Act of Killing (theatrical cut cos I couldn't make it through the 60+ minutes longer directors cut), Leviathan, The Selfish Giant, The Spectacular Now and Short Term 12. I've been trying to find For Those In Peril, a Scottish film that was very well recieved up here but got hardly any attention elsewhere, but being so small it's hard. I'll probably have to order it off the website or something since I missed it in its festival run. [editline]30th December 2013[/editline] and Computer Chess
Just watched Gravity and it owned even more than I expected going in Had some of my favorite Cinematography since Children of Men imo, the CG wasn't bad and didn't look fake as hell, acting was pretty good. Only upsetting part about the acting in general was that Clooney didn't have all that much screen time, but that's alright considering it would have defeated a lot of the point of the whole "alone feeling" the movie had going for it if there were two characters around for most of it. A lot of rebirth/evolution imagery, [sp]with Bullock being in the fetal position with the tube hanging off her abdomen and her swimming out of the sea with the frogs, getting on all fours, and then rising to two as the movie ended.[/sp] It was pretty blatantly obvious but it was still cool all around to fit with the whole "letting go" thing the movie had going on a lot. 10/10
Wolf of Wall Street - 8.5 out of 10, it's been a long time since I had so much fun in theater. It's hilariously funny, although it's humor is exclusively over the top - which might have gone stale or boring, but good thing it gets a bit serious later. The strongest bits are definitely acting: Leonardo is absolutely amazing, I think this is the highlight of his career, Jonah Hill was absolutely amazing, it turns out he actually can act and not only be one character from Superbad, and Matthew McConaughey had like three scenes at the beginning but I still cannot forget his character. It's also the superb writing. Many people compare it to Goodfellas, it's rather accurate (specially [sp]story and how entire plot resolves[/sp]), but I'm not sure whether it will get a cult status. On the other hand, while seeming more random I think it was a bit more "deep", in terms of having a message, making viewer think, and more symbolic than Goodfellas, but because of everything being over the top many people won't even notice that. [sp]And that kinda proves the point of the film.[/sp]
Lost in Translation - 7/10 Watched it because of Air - Kyoto. Chill movie with some chuckling moments, the style reminded me of Drive.
Mystic River (2003) Seen this ages ago and forgot everything about it somehow. Rewatch just reminded me how brilliant it is and how brilliant Clint Eastwood is as a director. Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon supported by a lot of people you'll recognise are all firing on all cylinders and rarely you get a full cast doing that such as the classics like the Godfather. The story and the underlaying twists and turns all fit together perfectly and the moral dilemas and what results settles long in the mind after the credits roll. My only disappointment was in myself for forgetting everything about this film but then again that allowed me to enjoy it all over again. A modern classic. Prometheus (2012) Needed a rewatch after seeing it at the cinema and although the 3D on the big screen gave it that wow factor it still delivered so much. The extra scenes help a lot if you had a problem understanding the intro. This film polarised audiences and many didn't like stupid character behaviour and unanswered questions. Deal with it! This fantastic film dealt with a story involving human origins and somehow tied it in perfectly with the Engineers in the original Alien film. Ridley Scott did an amazing job. Prometheus was bad and had stupid fucking characters and really shitty science. I'm super worried about Ridley Scott doing another Blade Runner, He hasn't made a good movie in a while.
i thought the recording of the previous people who were there were gonna evolve in some mindfuck plot but man was i disappointed
Prometheus was bad and had stupid fucking characters and really shitty science.
Whilst thats a fair point it is science fiction which I would say allows a degree of unrealistic creartive freedom. I agree on the Bladerunner idea though, Scott works better of original ideas as do most people. In a Better World (2010) Danish film about revenge, forgiveness, blame and grief. 2 kids with dads who work away form a close bond. One of the dads is a doctor working in war torn Africa which comes with obvious sacrifices. The film takes quite a turn where you're watching what these characters are building up to and you just hope they don't. The performances are very good here but I didn't think this deserved the Oscar for best foreign language film. Still a solid watch that won't leave you short changed. He was also good in Django Unchained
He was also good in Django Unchained
His role was too short to judge it correctly, but from what he had showe, yea - he played a village idiot really well.
Of course Jonah Hill can act. He was very good in Moneyball.
Still on my watchlist.
Killer Elite - 6/10 Okay-ish action movie with Jason Statham playing himself. Austin Powers: Goldmember - 7/10 still funnier than it should be.
Blade Runner - The Final Cut Another movie I had on my list. I could talk about this movie for hours but what I'll mention is that everything in this movie creates the perfect cyberpunk setting.
I watched a cool korean horror Tale of Two Sisters. I loved it a lot, it's just my type of horror. Finding something like this is just so hard usually. My only complaint is that the explanation got a bit too convoluted at the end, but it was still sweet. Psychological, creepy body horror (which I didn't see coming), genuinely cool scares. [editline]1st January 2014[/editline] also Lone Survivor - really intense. the action shits all over overrated turds like the hurt locker. yeah it gets a bit cheesy at the end but it was more balanced than I expected. being based on a true story, that I believe the survivor himself said was a very accurate portrayal, just makes it that much more intense.
Care to go into any more detail about why you don't like the hurt locker? I've only seen it once and don't remember much about it.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - 7.5/10 Ended up being a lot better than I thought, if you want to watch a light/easy movie give it a go. It does have some problems though. -Blatant product placement, so much of it that it pulled me out of the movie. Probably one of the biggest issues I have with the movie. -The first half is a little slow. The cinematography is really good, so is the soundtrack.
Care to go into any more detail about why you don't like the hurt locker? I've only seen it once and don't remember much about it.
Same here. All I remember is it was dumb.
Same here. All I remember is it was dumb.
That's all you really need It was a wasted opportunity for a great film.
Lost in Translation - 7/10 Watched it because of Air - Kyoto. Chill movie with some chuckling moments, the style reminded me of Drive.
well what a coincidence, i decided to watch Lost in Translation when i heard Air - Kyoto too. ive noticed that in a few of the movies where i've decided to watch it after hearing a certain soundtrack of it. Namely Take Shelter and Never Let Me Go proof that soundtracks can be very powerful
I've just finished watching a wonderful documentary film about digital verses reel presented by Keanu Reeves called Side by side. He interviews top draw directors on both sides from Danny Boyle who really pushed digital when the small filmakers started popping up with it to stalwarts like Chris Nolan who hates the format and wants the old photochemical reel to stay. It's interesting because theres much bigger questions than just format preferences here and if you want to learn more about the technical aspects of cinema and what roles people actually do then this is essential viewing. Heres a list of big hitters Reeves interviews: Danny Boyle James Cameron David Fincher Barry Levinson George Lucas David Lynch John Malkovich Chris Nolan Rob Rodriguez Joel Schumacher Martin Scorsese Steven Soderbergh Wachowski brothers Lars Von Trier Not many missing really and they all speak so passionately about this big debate and it's wider issues. (User was permabanned for this post ("alt of jewdozer. nice try" - Rusty100))
I saw side by side but I can't remember anything about it.
Dog Pound - 7/10 I got bored and decided to check this out on Netflix because it sounded good. Although it was a fairly bog-standard "prison movie" it was still competently done and the acting was very good. It had a satisfying climax and some character development. However, it really irks me that all of these prison movies try to show off the system as corrupt and broken because it is harsh. I thought the idea of prison was for it to be harsh, and I am no expert but I am fairly sure the guards wouldn't allow people to insult each other right in front of them. Then again, I know jack shit about prison or even juvenile detention, and the movie was still good. I didn't feel like the main character, Butch, ever really developed too much. And there are many plot threads that never seem to be resolved. That is always the problem with prison movies; how do you end it? The main character leaves? Fine, but what about everyone else? Do those tensions ever boil over? Dog Pound at least gives an exciting conclusion with a [sp]riot[/sp] but it doesn't explain to much and doesn't tie up all the ends. Still, it was a very well done movie and even if most of the characters didn't have that much of an arc, they were still interesting. The acting was good as well.
Care to go into any more detail about why you don't like the hurt locker? I've only seen it once and don't remember much about it.
The movie was alright at best and it was a horribly unrealistic portrayal apparently
