1408 is alright, no masterpiece but it's not terrible.
It's mediocre, but it didn't piss me off or anything.
Stand up guys - 8/10
The Family
3/5
Honestly, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It had some decent jokes. The whole bit with [sp]Goodfellas at the movie club[/sp] was pretty good, but all the wacky mob antics the family got themselves into, such as blowing up a factory, just didn't work. Plus, I didn't really like the son character. He just came off as unlikeable. And the ending really came off as unsatisfying. It would've been nice if it offered closure, but it didn't.
The World's End, 10/10
Fucking great movie, hilarious but serious when it needs to be. Simon Pegg really captures that poor "stuck in the past" character perfectly. I'll admit, I wasn't fond of it the first time watching, but after rewatching it, you see more things hidden in plain view relating to the other Cornetto movies and general hilarity.
Might as well give the entire trilogy a 10/10, to be honest. All great movies, very unique and they know how to slide in callbacks amazingly without dampening the theme of the movies themselves.
Pacific Rim 8.5/10
Fourth time seeing it, still bombastic and tons of fun. I can forgive its many rough patches because it has a heart of gold and wins me over every time. As soon as I see Otachi coming out of the breach to fight Cherno and Crimson I get excited all over again. You can definitely tell that Del Toro and company put a lot of effort into all this - the production design is honestly one of my favorites - and I notice new little details every time.
Open Grave
has the overused "characters wake up in weird situation with no memories" cliche' and the pay-off is average at best. Would have been okay as a pilot of a miniseries or something, but as it stands it's just a forgettable and boring movie with little to no interesting ideas. 4.5/10
Snowtown - 8.5/10
For those that don't know it's a film based on a true story of a serial killer in the 1990s in South Australia, and I found that it was unexpectedly brilliant. The entire movie was very chilling with all around fantastic acting, cinematography and music. The only real problem was that at times it was overly vague.

It was way too slow and uneventful for me.
Bubba Ho-Tep
If you ever wanted to see Elvis and JFK fight a mummy, look no further. This movie was great fun. Bruce Campbell played the part really well. The movie had its funny moments, its scary moments, its action moments, and even some sad moments. Overall I'd say it's a horror-comedy that, although not quite as good as the Evil Dead movies, is very good and holds its own in a genre that can be tough to pull off. Give it a watch, and make yourself a peanut butter and banana sandwich while you're at it.
the bourne identity - 8/10
i haven't seen this in a few years, still awesome
The Bourne Trilogy's biggest mistake was how it made everyone think shaky cam was a good idea.
The Bourne Trilogy's biggest mistake was how made everyone think shaky cam was a good idea.
It's funny because the first one is really steady.
Rush - 9/10
Fantastic film, considering I've never really taken a huge interest in Formula One, the earlier periods at least.
One of the better films to take on the racing genre.
The CGI in Rush was laughably bad though. It's one of those movies that's gonna be hard to watch in 5 years time.
The Bourne Trilogy's biggest mistake was how it made everyone think shaky cam was a good idea.
The biggest mistake was letting them make a fourth. [sp]secretly I wish I had never brought it up, but.. it really was a horrible, horrible Bourne movie[/sp]
Moonrise Kingdom - 7/10
It was nice to watch but realistically the premise was silly. I thought Bruce Willis did a great job as well, and seeing him with hair was very odd. Anyway I thought the two little kids were insane, I'm not sure if the movie is as much about their love as it is their insanity. Maybe I'm just seeing it too realistically, either that or I missed the point completely.
Pirates of the Caribbean - Curse of the Black Pearl - 8.5/10
I've never actually seen the Pirate films so I decided to start watching them all. I really liked this most of the whole series. There's plenty of nice action alongside good characters with development and an interesting plot. Superb acting all around too. It also starts trends seen throughout all four films (two guys bantering at one another, Jack getting slapped, etc.)
Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest - 7.5/10
This one was the least memorable to me for some reason, despite being better than On Stranger Tides. I loved the new characters introduced (I thought whoever portrayed Davy Jones did a fantastic job and I love the character), but there was a lot of unnecessary filler spots. I loved the ending as well.
Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End - 8/10
This one was my second favorite though I really hated how the beginning dragged. The entire time when they were trying to rescue Jack was quite tedious though it was interesting. The ending could have been much better. Instead of everyone just sitting back while the Pearl and The Flying Dutchman battled, I would have loved to see the other Pirate Lords do something. Their presence alongside the entire english armada was useless. Both sides just sat there the whole time! I enjoyed the ending though and the action was spot on.
Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tide's - 6.5/10
This one was okay but the story was a drag and uninspired. I thought the new characters introduced were stale and I didn't like them as much as others in prior movies. I hated what they did with Blackbeard as well. There wasn't much meat but the acting was superb and the humor was pretty good. I disliked how you never find out what happened with the missionary and the mermaid though, he just gets dragged into the water but you never find out what happens. Also it was nice to see more of Barbossa, I love the character and the acting is phenomenal.
Great series, I hope the bring back the old characters in the newest movie.

Australian film about a man who has been imprisoned by his mother in the cellar all his life so he has no idea how to behave. One day the world is opened up to him and chaos begins. This is a hilarious black comedy of social no no's and misadventure. I've not laughed this much in a long time. Star of the show>>

the 4th pirates of the caribbean was a lame excuse to make another movie with jack sparrow in it. the perfect definition of a cash grab.
really, they probably just went "ok, what famous pirate can we put in this one? oh we haven't used blackbeard yet, do it!"
while watching the film it's easy to notice how there was no effort put into it, at all

Agreed. I thought it was fun to watch but it was mindless

Both.

Turkish/German film based in Bremen/Istanbul about 2 families whose lives become a little intertwined as their need to do things brings them to new surroundings and new places.
The story is based on extreme coincidence which for me took me out of the film at times. The performances were very good but the anti climax as the credits rolled left me feeling a little short changed. We are used to a story coming to an end in a film but maybe thats not how life is, the story doesn't just end so in this case it can be argued that art has reflected life. Either way, some will love this but I doubt many will hate it.
saw 47 Ronin - 6.5/10
ehhh not really as mediocrely-good as i expected.
the writing is pretty bad and so are most characters. I guess what i most liked was the concept designs and cgi theyve done, was pretty cool looking
also saw Before Sunrise, but I wont rate it yet as I want to see the whole trilogy and see how well they connect with eachother.
but gotta say damn it was good as fug
Over the past couple days-
The Spectacular Now- 7.5/10
Written by the same duo as (500) Days of Summer, it's different but has a couple of the same ideas running through it. The star is Sutter, an 18 year old who just got dumped because he was trying to help a friend get laid so distracted the girl's friend, and his girlfriend thought he was cheating- although in retrospect it's totally possible that he would have gone for her. He's funny and witty but selfish and not that nice a dude. Quite manipulative, which is something that isn't called out in the film but an underlying thing (similar to how JGL in 500 is a total asshole and Zooy Deschanel is manipulative and mean). The other lead, Amy, is a kind of stereotypical shy high school girl (although as we go on we do get more in depth). Naturally pretty, not so confident, but funny and a little bit strange. However as the film goes on we see more of Sutter's life that he hides away and we understand why he's who he is, and we follow Amy's journey through her first relationship and her growing up. I think at first Sutter is just using her to get over his ex, and depending on your views its possible he doesn't care or learned to care. The ending to this film is just outstanding. Like literally just the final shot is perfect (although the last 15 minutes are great). It's ambiguous and genius and it's up to you to decide what it means. [sp]personally, I'm conflicted and I don't know what I want it to mean. On one hand, Sutter meeting his dad and his mum talking to him about it, along with him losing his job due to drinking and allowed him to grow up and realise what's wrong with him and how to change himself. Which i think he has done. He realised that, although at the start he was only using Amy, he truly did care about her and wants to fix what was a bad ending. But on the other hand, Amy has grown up too and were this the Amy at the start of the film she'd run and greet him with open arms, but I don't think she would now. I think she matured enough to understand Sutter is not good for her and definitely not boyfriend material[/sp]
Overall a really good movie, worth a watch and one of the better films of 2013 imo but it just misses my top 10.
Prince Avalanche- 7/10
David Gordon Green's return to indie cinema after a bumpy stint in comedy (Pineapple Express was excellent. I have a soft spot for Your Highness although I rank it higher than I think I should, and The Sitter was awful) is a strong return. Starring Paul Rudd and Emile Hursch as the only two characters aside an old man who gives them alcohol and a woman who appears twice, the film is totally about them. Paul Rudd is fantastic and Emile Hersch is strong- the two work on a long road leading into a town, putting down those yellow lines and the distance marker things on the side of the roads. They do this in 5 day stints getting to go back to the city every weekend, but Paul Rudd lives in the woods and saves money because he likes it (he took the job for the peace) but also to save money for his girlfriend, Emile's sister, so they can move and live together. It's a nice film that looks pretty and has an original, quirky story. It gets quite powerful towards the end and their relationship is tested. A good watch.
The Great Beauty- 8.5/10
Excellent and one of my favourites of 2013. Beautiful imagery and a captivating central character around a flowing plot of meeting people and things happening but it's all about this man who has just turned 65, living the high life in Rome for 40 years, trying to find a new meaning to it all. He is a writer who wrote just one book in his 20's (for reasons explained in the film) and became famous, then became famous for being famous. We follow him over a few days as he meets old friends, new people, attends events, and has a couple epiphanies. The film is like the child of Woody Allen and Fellini, which is interesting and works incredibly well. It's very much an Italian film, playing strongly on the beauty of Rome. Now, I must say. This film is absolutely stunning. The visuals are some of the best of the year and some of the most beautiful I've seen (helped by basing it in Rome, I can't deny. It's just such a beautiful city you'd be hard pressed to not leave with a visually impressive film. Before Midnight also takes place in Rome and is one of the most beautiful films of 2013 for sure, however this exceeds it. Sorrentino's swooping and panning camera, use of symmetry and heavy colours and light make for a real experience.) The film starts on his 65th birthday, but the film really begins soon after, when a man of Jep's (our protagonist) age -whom he has never met- reveals that his wife has died. His wife was Jep's first love 40 years back, and according to her diary never truly loved anyone but Jep. This takes him out of his content with the hedonism that is his life and perhaps even feels passion enough to write again.
Something I noticed about this film that I've not seen mentioned, is that it's a coming of age film. You don't need to be a teenager to grow up (Prince Avalanche is also a coming of age film where both characters, adults, are forced to grow up to overcome their challenges)
Definitely one of the best of the year. Funny, sad and beautiful, I really recommend this.
American Hustle- 6/10
Strange. The film is a blatant Scorsese rip in all ways to be quite honest. A kind of disappointing and overlong film that is reasonably fun but very convoluted and messy. The setting is great, the costume design excellent, Christian Bale is fantastic and the best thing about the film. His character is very good and portrayed perfectly. Amy Adams is strong and at points great, same for Bradley Cooper. Jennifer Lawrence is hammy and overacts. Jeremy Renner is good.
A decent but totally skippable flick. Eh. Don't get the hype at all. It's almost rubbish.

So glad somebody has posted about this one, it's been on my watchlist for a few weeks and now I must see it. Seeing the likes of Fellini being thrown at it was enough to get me tingling.
Akira
It's been a while since I wanted to watch the movie, I finally did yesterday. I thought it was going to be more philosophical but it wasn't, characters hadchildish motivations compared to what they do, maybe that's what they want to make you feel, but I found it silly. I have a Blade Runner 'hangover' but I expected it from an Anime movie. Everything else was pretty cool, the atmosphere and the design was awesome so was the soundtrack. I'd give it a 6,5/10. Would watch it again

if i remember correctly, the earlier version has completely different dialogue and voice actors, and from what i've come to understand (i haven't seen it myself, though i've tried to find it) is that it's generally the better version.
I wrote in the TV thread that I finished watching Star Trek: TOS and most of the TOS movies. The only ones I didn't see were V and VI, which aren't on Netflix for some reason. This is kind of a mixed blessing since from what I've heard V is absolute shit while VI was supposed to be the great sendoff for the original characters. Anyways, here are my reviews:
Star Trek: The Motion Picture: 4/10
Boring. Nothing really happened. The Enterprise crew gets together, the bald chick and the new captain have a thing for each other, V-GER does SOMETHING and poses SOME THREAT, but then Kirk and the rest convince it not to by having baldy and the-not-captain fall in love oh fuck why should I even bother continuing it was so boring I couldn't be bothered to pay attention. Still, it had it's moments.
Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan: 8/10
This was so much better. The original episode that featured Khan was pretty great, and I just can't help but get a boner whenever I hear Ricardo Montalban's voice (it's the only reason I could bear to watch the 3rd and 4th Planet Of The Apes movies). And yes, I will admit it... I did have a few tears during [sp]Spock's Funeral[/sp].
Star Trek III: The Search For Spock: 5/10
Eh. Seeing Doc Brown as a Klingon was great in a way the creators probably didn't intend. The [sp]Scene where Saviik "helped" New!Spock during Pon Farr[/sp] was squicky as hell, though. Whatever, the movie was a movie, that's all I can really say about it.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home: 9/10
I absolutely LOVED this one. The story was bleh, but the humor more than made up for it. "And a double dumbass to you, too!" The humor made the whole movie excellent. I'm kinda glad I didn't get to see the movie after this one because it probably would have ruined this one for me due to the sheer ridiculousness of Shatner trying to direct (although Neemoy did a good job directing this one).
All in all, it was a worthwhile experience. I hope the TNG movies can do as good if not better than the best of the TOS movies.
Gamera: Guardian of the Universe
For those who don't know, since Godzilla is the King of the Monsters, Gamera is kind of like the Duke of the Monsters. Not quite as well known, but not unimportant. The original Gamera series was light-hearted and aimed at children. However, the reboot trilogy was much more serious. Which series is better is subjective. As for this movie, it is the first of the reboot trilogy. It follows the standard kaiju movie pattern with the people, the scientists, the military, you know the drill. The acting was good as far as I can tell (I don't know Japanese so I can't tell too well)(also can't judge the dubbing because I watched with subtitles). The costume design and the miniature sets look amazing. I really wish Toho would stop being lazy and give the Godzilla films a Blu-Ray release because kaiju movies in 1080p with 5.1 surround are awesome. Gyaos is a pretty cool kaiju, comparable to Rodan. The little bits of CGI and green screen held up mostly well. There were only a couple of parts that looked absolutely terrible. Overall if you want a good, fun monster movie, check it out.

Just came out of the theater from Anchorman 2. Oh god my stomach hurts, it was funnier than the first one by quite a bit. 8.5/10
