So I went to see the new Hobbit film and goddamnit, it's actually bad. Like, really bad. Worse than the previous one which is saying something considering how much of a disappointment it was. Now, I didn't have very high hopes for this movie, nor was I particularly loooking forward to it, but I kept hearing how much of an improvement it was over the first one and after seeing it I'm surprisingly let down.
To start with, the writing is shockingly bad. Like, the first scene with the dwarves, after the intro scene, I was legitimately fucking stunned at how horrid the writing was. That scene and the first 30 or so minutes of the film are imo the worst part, and it kind of ruined any expectations I had for the rest of the movie. The pacing in the first half of the film is just baffling. It's all over the place.
What is probably the worst thing about this film, is how fucking serious it is. Like, I know it's 2014 and every adaption has to be grimdark and brooding but for fucks sakes, lighten the fuck up. The only characters I didn't hate were Bilbo, Gandalf and a few of the dwarves, only because everyone else is a brooding asshole. It's seriously remarkable. Worst offenders are definitely Beorn (for the few fucking minutes he showed up) and Legolas, with Thorin and Bard receiving honourable mentions. Speaking of Legolas, why in the flying fuck is he even in this movie? Seriously. Like, he shows up, and for some reason is a fucking racist asshole, has a bajzidjllion goddamn action scenes (which go on for fucking ever), broods, shares some dumb sexual tension with the elf chick (who's only in the movie because we have to have some romance and to kills some more orcs amirite hollywood?) and broods some fucking more.
What was up with Beorn btw?? That was another scene which baffled me. I don't remember exactly how that scene was in the book since it's been a while since I read it, but I'm pretty sure it was more fucking fun than the one in the movie, which has an unhealthy dose of sulking, like this whole fucking movie.
Again, this film is just too goddamn serious. There's no comic relief, no joke, shit I don't think anyone even cracks a fucking smile. This isn't Lord of the Rings, it's not like the story is that dark.. There's no colour, there's no fucking fun. Character development, humour and any sense of adventure and joy the film could have had is nonexistent. Instead, we get a ceaseless barrage of ridiculously over the top action sequences, cliches and just generally some dumb ass shit like the whole of Gandalf's storyline (which didn't make any sense), everything in Erebor (and I mean everything) and of course the big ol' cliffhanger.
It's not like I'm Tolkiens no.1 fan or anything but fuckkk. The Hobbit films could have been good, if they had just made it two movies and focus solely on the dwarves. It's just so bloated with filler, and pointless/boring action shit.
So yeah, I didn't like this film, and I don't have high hopes for the final part.
Paradise now (2005)
The madness of Palastine vs Israel is featured as we look into the story of 2 potential suicide bombers who are best friends. The madness of the situation is dramatised perfectly as unexpected influences start to affect these men and where they're heads are at. Support comes from the brilliant Lubna Azabal who should be much more prolific than she is. Its interesting to see a film of this topic filmed in Nablus without it feeling like propaganda or pointing the finger at Israel. Very good film.

Your kidding, I hope you are. Unlike the previous movie, they actually 'did' stuff in the movie, rather than just walking around duh in the previous movie. Your review is more like a rant btw. It would be logically that Legolas is there, as he is the son of Thranduil, and Thranduil has made his kin believe everyone are the lower race. What's your god damn problem, you actually didn't find any joy in this movie, that's remarkably sad. You didn't crack a smile ,even when Bombur [sp] was all like bouncin' and stuff and then all a sudden he is like fucking ninja gaiden against the orcs [/sp]. Everyone in the theatre was laughing hard at that. Gandalf's storyline is interesting and if you didn't know, his mission is somewhat true to the background. [sp]In 2850, Gandalf made a second attempt to spy out Dol Guldur. Stealing into the stronghold, he was finally able to confirm the identity of its lord.[41] He reported this to the White Council of Elves and Wizards, but Saruman, hoping to acquire the One Ring for himself, dissuaded the Council from acting against Sauron.[/sp]. They just added this storyline to the movie, which I don't mind. The love triangle is I think only thing I didn't like about the movie. But your review is just ranting, there is no critique, more like 'FUCK HOBBIT IS SO STUPID, NO JOY, EVERYTHING IS HOLLYWOOD GARBAGE, EVEN THOUGH I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT TOLKIEN NOR NO, THE FILMS ARE TOTAL FANTASY GARBAGE.' I really don't see anyone not liking this movie like it's the worst one ever. Some people think it is average, but not like 'writing is bad, everything is bad, movie should be shat on', it's not that bad.
hobbit 2 wasnt a "good" movie imo but worse than the first? no way
American Beauty - 9/10
Best film I have seen in ages.
When they introduced the Oakenshield dude in A Journey Begins, I thought, "Hold on, Aragorn isn't in this, is he?"

This is my third Refn movie, and with each one, I appreciate his style more and more. I really liked how it all looks, and the soundtrack is quite good as well. The format of the movie is nice and different from a traditional method. The actor for Charlie plays the part very well, and his actions are unpredictable. This movie also has one of the greatest dance scenes I have ever seen in a movie. Go and give it a watch. Like the other Refn movies I've seen, it's not for everybody, but if it's your thing, you'll love it.
Is Valhalla Rising any good? I haven't seen a Refn movie I've disliked yet.

I liked it. Kinda slow at times and has very little dialogue, but it's very good.
Captain Phillips - 9.5/10
phenomenal. Amazing acting especially from Hanks at the end. Had me at the edge of my seat the entire movie.
Elysium - 6/10
A somewhat okay representation of what could happen in the future if things go wrong. I've seen better plenty of times, though.
For me, Elysium was 5/10.
A few cool sci-fi scenes don't make up for the cliche-riddled plot and messy camera-work.
Saw Lone Survivor. Very heartbreaking story, the thought that these were real guys and they really died is very peculiar. Obviously SPR was based around real people, but the last movie that made me feel like this was Blackhawk Down. Very solid flick though, maybe ran a bit long. 7/10.
I read the book, I would give the book 10/10 and it is 2-3 days longer than the movie (due to time constraints and such with book to movie conversions) and in no way did it run too long
I'd give movie 9/10 only 9 due to the event changes
I also went to see Marky Mark vs. The Taliban and I enjoyed it a lot, 9/10 probably. Funny parts, pretty touching, not overly gore-y and kind of helped it's case by not making it so. Pretty tasteful and genuine as far as action movies go, but this is to be expected with stuff that is based on true stories. I wasn't totally into stuff like Hurt Locker, but I did like Black Hawk Down and this kind of reminded me of it a bit, it was great in it's own way though.
I really do recommend it, the performances were solid and Mark Wahlberg is great as usual, at least, I usually see him as the great point of whatever he's in. Ben Foster and Speed Racer did well, I forget the name of the other guy but he was cool too.

Beowulf
bad-
· terrible CGI
· laughable animations
· the queen looks like Fiona's mother from Shrek, lmao
· in-your-face imax 3d derelicts
good-
· CGI Angelina Jolie as a monster-girl, I guess?
verdict-
Feels like an old videogame cutscene that drags on an on. in some istances I couldn't help but laugh out loud at the animation.
3/10
Bernie - 7.6/10
was not expecting to feel sad about this :(
very very good written and entertaining to watch, easily jack black's best role ive seen so far .
Rush - 8.5
Damn, that's a fine movie. It may be Ron Howard's best. I'm not sure how it presents the reality between Hunt and Lauda, but in the film it was brilliant. I was expecting it to be more documentary and methodic but it's straight action and man's friendship/rivalry. Add to that nice cinematography and we have a very good film.
James Hunt [sp]beating the journalist after the press conference[/sp] was one of my favourite "fuck yeah" moments in 2013 films.

Men are pigs. Amazing film.
It was a fucking great movie, albeit extremely tragic.
Do we have a thread that talks specifically about movie trailers?
That thread might as well include TV adverts then because some of them are better made than some actual movies.
I just fucking love car adverts, and sports adverts. There's always good sampling of known musics, catchy editing and so on..
maybe a "short film" thread.. surprised it hasn't been done already
That's a good idea actually. There's lots of good stuff out there that's short. I've seen some really great films over the year or so I've been interested in shorts. [sp]also i can promote myself[/sp]
The Spanish prisoner & Che part 1 were pretty good. Part 2 was rather bad.
Elisium is a 1/10 movie no shame about saying it. Good thing I followed it with the screening of Gravity.
watched Her
I really liked it a lot, very few people do the complexities of human emotion like Spike Jonze does. a thoroughly interesting and depressing movie. also, scarlett sounds exactly like rashida jones, to the point where i was picturing rashida the whole film.
