I've yet to see it but that movie seems like textbook oscar bait.
Her
As a communication and media student, this film really spoke to me not only through its phenomenal design and execution, but with its ideas about the future of the human condition at an individual level. As I walked out of the cinema I was kind of unsure what to think; the film has countless layers and themes that will no doubt be discussed for years to come, so much so that it's almost overwhelming. Fundamentally, though, it's packed with emotion and delivered flawlessly. 9.4/10
The design of the clothes alone.
They seem to be in a "high beltline pants are in again" phase, I like how the mobile "developed" into a design that's very basic, very "well it's just a PC to carry aound it doesn't need fancy edges and design"-like and I think Joaquin Phoenix looks more and more like Daniel Day Lewis. Imagine a movie where they play twins or father and son or something.
12YAS? I suppose it is but it doesn't feel like it. I don't think it was made with that in mind. I watched the TIFF panel with McQueen and the cast and it really doesn't seem like he's too bothered about winning awards and he made the film to tell Solomon Northup's story and tell a story about slavery.

here's the conference and it's really interesting. Mcqueen is pretty great at talking about the film. He's quite witty in a way actually. The woman giving the questions is not necessarily bad but it's hilarious how careful she's being dealing with race and the politics of the film and Steve McQueen is clearly just thinking "just fucking say what u wanna say goddamn" or "why even ask this" it's pretty funny
good panel tho. I heard one of the critics from the guardian ask a question but I can't remember her name
Last Vegas
pointless, meaningless and incredibly unfunny movie.
Additionally to that terribly directed, cut and written.
That bikini contest scene was worse and less dynamic than any cheap American Pie ripoff could ever do.
The party. The shoehorned 50 cent. Just EVERYTHING.

Fuck I hope Mike and Jay have a go at it.
Dredd - 8/10
Not much I can say that's already been said, sadly. Though I do want to note, the visual design is awesome
All I want is Fassbender for Best Supporting
It's extremely unlikely, his performance was brilliant but it's a tough fight with Jonah Hill, and specially Jared Leto. Besides the fact that Leto was absolutely stunning and stole the film, him winning will win some political points for Academy.
I've yet to see it but that movie seems like textbook oscar bait.
I would think that, but I was watching closely the production of this film since very beginning. Steve McQueen doesn't give one or two damns about awards, and Solomon Northup's story is really fascinating. It's kind of coincidence that it's now "hot" to make movies dealing with slavery and present white guilt.
If you're looking for textbook oscar bait this year, search for "Lee Daniels' The Butler" or "Saving Mr Banks".
it annoys me that Lee Daniels called his film "Lee Daniels' The Butler" because he didn't even write it or produce it or anything and there was no need to call it that. could literally just be "The Butler" and it'd be fine. I mean I back the Auter theory to a fair extent but come on. That's just masturbation.
Yeah I guess The Butler is a better example of oscar bait than 12YAS. Funny how it didn't get a single nomination though.

it wasn't that good, the story wasn't very meaningful..
in fact it felt more like a TV movie to me.
It had Oprah in it, for god's sake.

aren't the academy famously homophobic?
but then they can show they're liberal and with the times if they let Jared Leto win cos thats more important than acting quality. See- Crash winning best picture.
not seen Dallas Buyers Club though, do look forward to it when it comes out here
aren't the academy famously homophobic?
And this will be the best way to "deny" this "rumours" and shut the naysayers.
The Maltese Falcon (1941); 9/10.
What a classy movie. A great example of why I love film noir. I honestly think that my rating will only go higher with repeated viewings. Almost perfect in every way.
Kinda wanna put some thought for The Oscars out so yea
I'm also horribly curious and angry at the total snub of Inside Llewyn Davis outside of a mere two technical categories. I think it's totally snubbed and it's one of the Coen's best films. It was one of the best of 2013 (it's not even out in wide release here in the UK yet so I'm counting it as a 2014 release though, I'm sure it'll be on my top 10) but to me it deserved- best actor, best picture, best director, best score, best original song (either Mr President or Fare Thee Well- I dislike Mumford and Sons but god Marcus Mumford blew it away with this. Best thing he's done in his career by miles haha. Actually loved the song), best cinematography (glad it got a nod) and it also got nominated for best sound mixing but I don't know enough about sound design to comment. Also, there are only 9 nominations in Best Picture but they're known to do 10. So they straight up decided "nah this film is not good enough" which is ridiculous. I wonder if something happened between the Academy and the Coens to warrant this lack of recognition- it's no secret how petty the Academy is and how willing they are to let outside events and politics influence their choices, which I think alone makes the entire thing unprofessional but whatever I guess...
American Hustle I've spoken my dislike for, but also it's obvious that politics are influencing it via buzz names and such. It annoys me that it got so many nominations and angers me more that I know it will win some. If it wins any acting awards or wins best director/writer I will just oh god no that thought is terrible but oh so likely. Just hoping they don't do a "sorry we didnt give u dudes stuff before" and sweep AH. Christian Bale nailed it, yes. He was fantastic in the film and it's a well deserved nomination, the only one I'm alright with. However, Amy Adams just cashed it in and was horribly flat and dull. Jennifer Lawrence was the opposite, and instead was an overacted caricature, not to mention that she was awfully miscast and didn't suit the role AT ALL. And Bradley Cooper was just... There. He was fine I guess. No one really became their character and it's obvious that they're all who they are, due in part to lack of writing on Russell's part- every character is very one dimensional and written so actors can shout cos thats what earns oscars. Russell didn't care about the story and it's clear. His women especially are horribly written. All Lawrence's character is about is showing that she's strong and independent and doesn't need men but then she actually does rely on men? Wtf Russell.
Also, I've not seen Her yet since it's not out but Phoenix looks excellent so I wonder if they've just decided "fuck Joaquin he doesn't like us so we don't like him" and ignored him. Like he didn't win last year but absolutely deserved it (although he was going up against DDL on an American biopic by Spielberg so I guess Oscar snubs were inevitable) for The Master, and no nomination this year.
Also I wish Spring Breakers got a nomination, Franco deserved a best supporting actor nom and I'm quite gutted he didn't get one (although I'm not surprised) but ngl my main reason for this is because it means Harmony Korine would have been at the Oscars which is one of the greatest thoughts of all time. I would love to see his pre-ceremony interview. It'd be incredible. (if it were up to me SB would be getting Best Picture, best Director, best supporting actor, best cinematography, best editing, best sound, and best original screenplay nominations)
I like Ellen DeGeneres so it's nice to see her hosting the Oscars cos she's entertaining but it's weird. like why is she there. Obviously for entertainment value but, she's not really relevant to cinema. Obviously the Academy only cares about stretching it out to what is it, 3 hours? so they can pack it full of ads and make a fuck load of cash.
Also, complete and utter disregard of anything left wing including Foreign film. Almost totally zero recognition aside the Foreign Film category, which I've always viewed as a sort of "best of the rest" deal. The Grandmaster got I think 2 or 3 technical nominations, and The Act of Killing got a Best Documentary nomination (and it will probably win). Zero recognition for Blue Is The Warmest Colour causes me physical pain. Where are the Best Director, Best Actress & Supporting Actress, cinematography and Adapted Screenplay nominations? (it was shown too late in its native France to be considered for Best Foreign Language picture so I understand that- it could appear in the next year. I assume the same thing happened with The Hunt, as I actually saw that film in 2012 in the UK and expected it to appear at the 2012 ones but it didn't. Nice to see it getting recognition as it was incredible) Where's the cinematography, director, and writing nominations for The Great Beauty? I know they don't go outside of safe foreign films with a lot of attention but those two got arguably the most of any foreign films of the year, especially BITWC.
Also purely on principle, ew at Iron Man 3 and Into Darkness getting Oscar nods.
[editline]16th January 2014[/editline]
also Leviathan 100% deserved a best documentary nod but I guess its a bit too out there for the academy despite being a small masterpiece
Maybe Llewyn Davis is being put in for next year's awards, seeing as it didn't get a wide release until last week.
Oscar nominations everyone!

Biggest surprise is probably disturbing lack of Inside Llewelyn Davis, Rush and All is Lost.
Oh, and I love how Acadamy changes every year the amount of candidates for Best Picture.
No Pacific Rim nomination for Visual Effects? Bull honkey!
Maybe Llewyn Davis is being put in for next year's awards, seeing as it didn't get a wide release until last week.
But that was the circumstance of Her's release too.
No Pacific Rim nomination for Visual Effects? Bull honkey!
While Pacific Rims effects were good, they were nothing new.
Maybe Llewyn Davis is being put in for next year's awards, seeing as it didn't get a wide release until last week.
Its eligible this year. It's been nominated for cinematography and sound mixing, it did its festival run last year so it played in places eligible for the academy awards.
While Pacific Rims effects were good, they were nothing new.
while the effects themselves (robots and monsters and etc) weren't anything new or unique, the way they handled the sense of scale in that movie was absolutely amazing, imo
Wow such an odd experience watching the wolf on wall st after just seeing stroszek, wich tackles the same issues, but without dehumanising itself. I couldn't feel any emotion watching the wolf on wall st, the characters had no originality, it felt bleak.
The simplest way to put it is this:
The wolf on wall street wants to develop its story based on a very delicate issue and hangs on a very tight cord
because of it's often overused and badly placed black humor

Then it drives straight off-course half boozed, forgetting its purpose, and why it exists

And finally chokes on its own puke when it no longer can contain all those cringeworthy 3hours of absurdity.

It's sad how alot of people praise this movie after exiting the cinema.Millions were poured into this movie's advertising, making it look all cool and fancy for people to look up for...I guess joffrey can explain why this happens better than myself, in this short presentation:

Asphalt Jungle - Not a bad 50's heist movie. It's nice that it doesn't focus so much on the actual hesit, but rather on the preparations and on what follows next.
7/10
Imagine having that wrong of an opinion

Shit, that's a bummer.

12 Years a Slave
Her
Wolf on Wallstreet
In what order should I see these movies
Argo Extended Cut
5/5
Still an excellent film. The extended cut didn't add a whole lot, but it was still pretty cool. And "Argo fuck yourself" still makes me laugh. They had a whole special feature with damn near everyone in the cast said it, which was amusing.

Wolf of Wall Street either first or last. That's not a middle film.

more like shitty ripoff attempt at making a scorsese film but fucking it up terribly cos u cant actually write a goddamn film
It does feel like a ripoff of a Scorsese film or a ripoff of Boogie Nights.
It's not a terrible film though, it's pretty average.
Speaking of academy awards and oscars and shit.
I really wish French movies that aimed for the similar awards in France weren't all the fucking same.
Seriously, every single French film that ever gets an award at like the Cannes Festival or anything else is always this ultra-serious drama about either a family that goes through divorce, or prostitution. Sometimes both. And the trailer always has someone yelling at their parents and said parents slapping them back.
French cinema can be such a fucking choir.
I find the various awards and their respective ceremonies to be boring and pointless.
