It was actually a really nice speech. [editline]21st January 2014[/editline]
in some weird way, i think wolf of wall street reminded of Boogie Nights
Not seen wows yet but I just finished watching Boogie Nights and holy goddamn that was an incredible movie. Probably pta's best. Left me speechless, I'm on my phone but I'll write more when I get on my computer
He didn't.
He should have.
ok yea Boogie Nights- 10/ motherfuckin 10 GODDAMN THIS FILM WAS SO GODDAMN GOOD. In one viewing it has, to me, surpassed There Will Be Blood and Magnolia and then some, not to mention The Master and Punch-Drunk Love. This is, by a country mile, PTA's best film and I think it has earned a spot in my all time Top 10. I fucking loved this goddamn film- and by experience his films are always better second time through. So yeah I'm excited for that. There's so much going on in this film, it's hard to know where to begin. There's so much to say and I'll definitely miss most of it... Overall the film is total genius. It's funny and glamourous, stylish but very dark. It goes through tonal changes every once in a while and it works very very well. The film follows a young stud named Eddie (Mark Wahlberg) who works at a nightclub, where he's spotted by porn director Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds) and is quickly given an interview, where he has sex with porn starlet Rollergirl (Heather Graham). They're both impressed by his talent and very large penis. This is the start of a new life for Eddie, as he has been looking for a way to escape his suburban life, and get away from his parents. He thinks he's living the dream, and to be honest it seems like he is. Fame, money, women, friends. The film plays heavily on comedy at this point, although the darkness of the industry is there and shown clearly (increasingly so as the film progresses; for instance at the first party of the film a girl OD's on coke and it's not pretty at all, which is a shock to the viewer and is a great bit of foreshadowing). Drugs are rampant and emotional damage is there, although the main circle of characters are relatively stable and almost normal. Eddie, now named "Dirk Diggler" as a stage name, has done it partly as a revenge ploy but mainly because it's just what he wanted to do for a living. He says when having sex with a girl early on that he's got a talent and he wants to use it, and later on that he has this talent and wants to share it, claiming he helps relationships by allowing them to use the material to spice up their love lives. Jack Horner is a filmmaker. He knows he's making porn and it's what he wants to do, it's not like he's got stuck there and wants to make "real" films- in fact, his ethic is to turn pornography into real movies. So people are gripped by the story, the characters, and will sit in their seats in the nighttime theatre with cum in their pants cos they're finished but don't wanna leave. He considers himself an artist. He cares about quality. Refuses to switch to tape because he thinks film is better, even if it's more expensive. He has a sense of integrity. There's a lot of characters, this isn't half of the main cast (it's ~8-9 people) but yea. The characters in this film are great, and everyone is perfectly cast and everyone gives brilliant performances. The film is pretty objective, it doesn't judge. It just shows what happens to these people- that being said, the direction is fun and really cool, and it does build a strong emotional level. Something I found interesting is that the film's character follow the path of the porn industry- the booming late 70's, where everything goes and everyone has a great time, making loads of money. It's big and it's glamourous. Then the 80's come, tape is taking over, film is just too expensive and the home video market is destroying profit. Jack is forced to start budget cutting massively, shooting on tape that looks like shit, getting rid of storylines, studio sets and professional acting. (I noticed also that before the film takes the big turn but after the industry is changing, there's two seriously fake looking girls with obviously fake tits in a pool, something not seen in the 70's, they look trashy and disgusting... I think that set the scene really well. How reality is gone, everyone wants the fiction, although they don't want high class stuff, they don't care, they just wanna jack off to things that are getting ridiculous) As tape is taking over, and as everyone's lives begin to spiral for various reasons, things get worse and worse... Just rambling plot there. sorry. I dunno what else to say, I adored the film. There's a lot going on, symbolically yes but mostly in character depth I suppose. And when I try to flesh that out I end up reciting plot points. The film documents the industry (I have no idea how realistically). The sex, the all too common tale of descending into drugs, leading into the crime world, people being desperate, getting stuck. There are definite satirical elements, one of my favourite things being Jack's speech in the diner wanting to make real films, about having people sit in the cinema to watch the film for things other than the sex, then we see bits of his film that he wants to be remembered by (the action star one with Dirk in it) and it's super trashy and fake looking, the film enjoyed poking fun at how seriously the characters took the industry. Or the films, at least. I also want to take a second to give credit to my favourite scene in the film- the drug deal where [sp]Eddie, Reed and Todd try to sell baking soda as coke[/sp]. The scene goes on for about 15 minutes, it could honestly get away with about 5, but dragging it out so much worked perfectly. From the fantastic soundtrack playing over, both complimenting and contrasting the situation, to Alfred Molina's excellent acting, to the firecrackers going off... This scene was fucking amazing. I felt truly nervous and was dreading what was going to happen. The feeling it gave me reminded me of the rape scene in Irreversible, only it's like that realisation that something's going to happen, but that feeling stays because nothing happened yet. And it builds more and more, as you're wondering where it's all gonna fuck up. A perfect scene. Technically, this film is fantastic. The cinematography is incredibly impressive. It's clearly influences by Scorsese, but PTA definitely does his own thing with it. I don't think it's a criticism to compare them. Its long tracking shots, kinetic movement, strong contrast lighting, it's colourful... Really really great. A visual feast. PTA's direction is top class. The writing is excellent, the soundtrack fantastic, the acting stellar... I was also fascinated the entire 150 minute run time, really sucked in, not a single dull moment in the entire movie. So great. This film was fucking incredible and I urge everyone to watch it. A masterpiece and to me Paul Thomas Anderson's best film.
good thing the entirety of you're next is awesome
I wanna rate agree, but the first 30 minutes is legitimately awful
im gonna watch Boogie Nights hopefully it is as good as PTA's other work. I hear it is.
Its a totally different pace to his other stuff and extremely funny. I thought it was amazing. AK'z is right, it is like Wolf of Wall Street because of its hedonism and excess. I didn't think it was quite as good as There will be blood though, Paul Dano for me nailed that movie. [editline]22nd January 2014[/editline] Her This was exactly as I imagined, fantastic but empty and dark. Phoenix and co are fantastic, totally convincing. I just hope the future isn't virtual because with the internet, TV and social media we are becoming ever more detached from each other as humans. Even this forum is a manifestation of this parallel life we have, the fact that I'm writing this and kidding myself that people give a fuck. Everybody will take something personal from this film and for me it was a warning to keep it real. People need people and this film is a reminder of that. Outstanding piece of cinema, go see it. The Watsons Go To Birmingham 8/10 (as far as TV movies go) I read this book back in 7th grade and really liked it. This did an okay job pinning down some of the main points, but of course felt rushed to fit it all in for a 1:30 tv block. The [sp]Church bombing[/sp] scene was actually pretty powerful. I was surprised how much I actually liked it, and I might have to reread the book again. And the little girl looked a lot like Lil Wayne for some reason.
I wanna rate agree, but the first 30 minutes is legitimately awful
pretty much all of the dialogue and most of the acting(especially mom and dad) is
Just watched 'Her' at the movies. Holy shit, absolutely fantastic. Deserving of those five Oscar nominations and more. Most certainly a film worth seeing!
Are you emphasising 'film' cos it's "not just some movie, like transformers!" cos that is silly they are literally the same thing and I don't get why people do it. /r/movies (ironically) seems to make a point that there is a difference but no there is not
pretty much all of the dialogue and most of the acting(especially mom and dad) is
Me and my friends still say be careful whenever we leave the house Just finished Fruitvale Station. 9/10. Cried a bunch.
oh my god several people outside who want to kill us, better run outside
That was straight up one of the beat scenes I have seen in a film tbh. Outstanding.
Are you emphasising 'film' cos it's "not just some movie, like transformers!" cos that is silly they are literally the same thing and I don't get why people do it. /r/movies (ironically) seems to make a point that there is a difference but no there is not
Why would you even go there?
Because by highlighting the word 'film' he is implying that it's not just a movie or whatever which is a bit silly cos they are two words that mean the same thing and there is some kind of weird thing around them like where you're in this special circle because you watch films, pieces of cinema and not just shlocky 'movies' [editline]22nd January 2014[/editline] Why else would he highlight it? That's why I went there. Cos it's really dumb.
p sure he was talking about /r/movies
Oh right I understand now I dont even know tbh its shitty and /r/truefilm is 100x better. You van actually discuss films there properly and not be smacked in the face by circlejerkery. But it's an ok base for getting info and can sometimes be good [editline]22nd January 2014[/editline] It's sadly the second best sub on films on the website, I'm subbed to several but most are dead/have no sense of community at all and little discussion. Don't really know anywhere else to look for talking about films aside here. Imdb is mostly shitty or not that interesting, rotten tomatoes just is awful overall and letterboxd to my knowledge doesn't have much going on aside posting a review and rating films but I've not looked at all. I've only very recently Started to us. It properly, as a film diary.
Terminator 1 ILL BE BACK/10 I'm ashamed to have not seen this movie before [editline]23rd January 2014[/editline] Going to watch Terminator 2 next. I've heard 3 isn't that good and isn't worth watching, is this true?
3 is fucking horrendous but 2 is even better than 1
3 is fucking horrendous but 2 is even better than 1
I agree. I stopped after the second one. The third just seemed .. Out of place.
Didn't the woman who played Sarah Connor say herself that she believed the series ended at 2?
But without Terminator 3, we wouldn't have this:
Escape Plan, 6/10 Could have been really good for a blockbuster action film, but my god was it cheesy at times. It really put the mood off in a bad way.
Just watched 'Her' at the movies. Holy shit, absolutely fantastic. Deserving of those five Oscar nominations and more. Most certainly a film worth seeing!
Oh man, I just found that this movie comes out on my birthday in the UK, I must see it.

sadly that was the only good part of salvation because it was like WAT and then the rest of the movie sucked
good part of salvation
:pwn:
3 is fucking horrendous but 2 is even better than 1
3 is pretty shit yeah but the last speech scene gives me chills, shame terminator died out after it
This is the true ending to Terminator to me
