Tom Yum Goong 2 (The protector 2) Bad · The writing was bad, The plot was bad, the acting was bad. The movie was ridden with deus ex machinas to the point where some people came back from the dead TWICE. It also didn't know whether to be a action comedy a la jackie chan so much relief it has, a serious action movie with all the deaths and revenge and angst, or a Indian silly over the top action movie. · The editing was hit and miss. Some shots were clever, like the POV camera during a rooftop jump scene, (very reminescent of parkour POV videos!) but at times the action scenes were connected very very badly one another spacially. · 3D IMAX derelicts. You'll see knifes, punches and kicks coming at your face for the sake of it. I hate it and breaks the pace. Good · The fighting was top notch as usual. I could watch Tony Jaa beating people to a pulp all day. · The action was so over the top it's good. There's a scene with Tony vs dozens of thugs on motorcycles ON ROOFTOPS, to name one. · The charachters were a little more solid than usual, and unlike the previous movies, they actually have some background introduction and whatnot. · The music grew better from his previous movies, it actually has a couple of drum'n'base and heavy metal tracks. Overall a disappointing one. I had my hopes up since the director was the same as in Ong Bak, the only Tony Jaa movie so far where the acting and plot didn't suck. Instead, we got another movie where tony jaa's bone crushing kicks alone are worth watching. 6 / 10 [editline]29th January 2014[/editline] It's a shame that Tony Jaa's career is condemned to a lifetime of suckage in thailand. I feel like he's got the potential to be the next Bruce Lee.
But didn't the director for Ong Bak also do the first Tom Yum Goong? Because I remember that film being kinda shit too. All I remember was the bone breaking hits, that transsexual gang member and elephants. [editline]29th January 2014[/editline] and the scenes that took place in Sydney.
I love The Departed
I love the sudden aggressive outburst of Leonardo when he just smashes people with glasses or throws them around.
I love the sudden aggressive outburst of Leonardo when he just smashes people with glasses or throws them around.
what are you on your period
Well, now I'm going to rewatch it. Any other movies similiar to the departed, I love stuff about criminals. I've seen so many though.
brooklyn's finest
Demolition Man 6.5/10 It sometimes tries to be funny and other times tries to be serious, it's just confusing and ends up coming across as goofy and weird. The concept of the future was interesting though, and the (very few) fight scenes were great. The two leads actually did a great job, Snipes was amazing as a fucking lunatic, and Stallone did a pretty good job as the classic badass he usually plays. Overall I have mixed feeling about this movie, I think it just tries to be so many things that it doesn't exceed at any of them. Worth a watch if you like 80s - 90s action and sci fi, but don't expect too much. Take Shelter It just didn't work for me. I get that it's supposed to have subtle meanings, metaphors, etc. but it just felt boring and uninteresting. I won't rate it cause I just think it's part of my taste to not like movies like these. The acting and cinematography was excellent, but the story just wasn't engaging and felt like it wasn't going in any particular direction.
I'm curious as to why you didn't like the Departed, I thought it was near perfect also speaking of Django yall need to see 12 Years a Slave, fuckin amazing
The thing that sticks with me the most from the film was the truly horrific editing. It is plagued with jump-cuts and continuity errors, not to mention there is no rhythm and the pacing of the editing is jumpy and messy. This is mostly during the first act, but honestly I almost turned the film off because I couldn't fucking handle how terrible it was. It was nauseatingly shit. Luckily it sorted itself out just before I couldn't take it any more and I stuck through to the end and the rest of the film was fine, and it turned out to be a pretty decent movie. However aside that complaints are all round weak acting aside Mark Wahlberg (as someone who likes Mark Wahlberg, you know you've fucked up when you have a stellar cast and he gives the best performance by a country mile. Alec Baldwin as well is tied for best performance as a fantastic scene-stealer), Jack Nicholson and Martin Sheen were terrible and out of place and cheesy/silly (Sheen especially), Dicaprio is miscast and not a convincing tough guy (he just seems like he has a case of wee man syndrome. Saying "fuck" every second word is not good dialogue. All the stuff Scorsese writes seems to be totally full of the word (although I didn't find it a problem in WOWS, and it worked fine in Goodfellas) It's not good writing, it's childish. I have nothing against swearing in a film, I find it terrible when a screenplay censors itself, but it's just too much. It's hard to believe and annoying. I think the screenplay in general is not that well written... The timeframe is unrealistically small. Characters are cardboard archetypes. If Jack Nicholson is a crimelord, why is he going around doing dirty work? He must be pretty stupid as well, for not working out that the rat turned up coincidentally close to him getting a new recruit who is very interested in the inner workings of all his operations. From there as well, that therapist must be really shitty if she's dating patients (iirc this character has literally no plot relevance as well and sucks up far too much screentime between Damon and Dicaprio's time with her). And all the subplots are just convoluted. I found the film overall hard to take seriously, and not because of black comedy elements. I just thought it was a ridiculous film, with stupid amounts of gore and violence and even more stupid levels of swearing, and some of the dialogue borders on cringe. The ending is dumb, it's just shock value and tries to tie everything up and bring all these minor characters in in some big ass reveal where you're meant to have your mind blown on Fight Club levels, but really it's just hard to believe. The film tries so hard to be cool, but it just falls on its face and seems silly. I feel like the Academy just realised "hey wait, Scorsese's never won an Oscar! wtf dudes??" so they were like "well uh he has a new film coming out I guess he can just give him every goddamn award even if its his worst work".
ahh come on it's not a bad film. I do see your point about the oscars though, it really wasn't the best that year at all. silliness and cheesiness is the fun in those kind of crime films. Thing is, I reckon the Infernal Affairs movies were probably superior to The Departed, definitely have to check those out. As for Nicholson and Martin Sheen, I thought they were highly decent.. Not something to scream about, not really a top 5 in their careers or anything. In all honesty, The Departed was a decent popcorn movie with an intriguing style and ruthlessness. If I see the original Hong Kong version and it turns out to be better, then that's probably gonna make me avoid rewatching it.
The jump cuts really irritated me at first, to a degree where it really hurts the movie. But overall it's still an amazing movie. I really liked the characters and dialogues.
American Psycho "Do you like Phil Collins?" I liked this movie. Christian Bale played his part quite well, and the supporting actors held up nicely. The comedy bits were nice (I particularly liked the business card scene), but sometimes felt like they didn't completely mix with the rest of the movie. The "less is more" approach to the killings worked well. By not showing his murders in any sort of detail, it left more to the imagination. The building of Bateman's insanity through the film was great, and the ending was pretty satisfying. Overall, go check it out. I give it 4 stray cats out of 5. if it weren't for american psycho, i wouldn't have realised invisible touch was the undisputed masterpiece
if it weren't for american psycho, i wouldn't have realised invisible touch was the undisputed masterpiece
Invisible Touch was the first cassette I bought when I got into collecting cassettes. Jamming to it on a Walkman is the best feeling.
Thing is, I reckon the Infernal Affairs movies were probably superior to The Departed, definitely have to check those out.
Well the first Infernal Affairs movie was great but the others are just average if not disappointing.
"well uh he has a new film coming out I guess he can just give him every goddamn award even if its his worst work"
It's far from being his "worst work" though.

It is very slow but I like that, gives it a more realistic and intimate feel.
I love that movie, one of my favourites. It is very slow but I like that, gives it a more realistic and intimate feel.
I think Take Shelter's a real gem, very raw performance by MShannon. Definitely need to give it a rewatch.
I dunno, I just couldn't connect with it. anyway.. Total Recall (remake, extended) After all the shit said about it... it's not that bad. sure it's worse than the original, sure it's not particularly any good. but honestly it's not terrible, it had some decent action sequences and the story is good for someone who doesn't know it already. The fights were good cause there was no shaky cam or shit, you could follow the moves and what was going on at least. Also Bryan Cranston was great as the villain. Not something I would recommend by all means, but it didn't deserve the shit it got.
Frozen - 7.5/10 It was good, but not the best disney movie by a long shot.
To me it felt like a mid-tier Disney Renaissance movie. Great stuff, but certainly not the best. I have a hard time comparing Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, and now Frozen to the Disney classics because they're so relatively new. It is nice having good Disney movies again, though.
I, Frankenstein: 2/10 The effects and action sequences are decent but there's no reason to be invested in the story (its hard to care for the main character when he's boring to watch and he does something horrible at the start of the film). Plus there's loads of cliches (an actual line from the movie is "I thought it was the end... but it was just the beginning", recited with absolute seriousness). Bill Nighy looks like he's having some amount of fun being a bad guy though.

Cube(1997): 7/10 A bit slow and boring at times, but definitely a thriller. It was a fairly decent watch. I remember seeing it when I was younger, I was absolutely horrified it would happen to me, and how I'd try to get through the traps. Then again, there were 290,000 or something rooms. So I'm sure I'd have died. I don't have a mentally handicapped prime number permutation solving genius, or a cute girl with glasses that does a whole shitload of figuring out.
You should avoid the sequel and prequel. They're crap.
I didn't think Hypercube was that bad. Zero is woeful though.
Yeah while I remember Hypercube being less bad than Zero, it was still pretty damn inferior to the first one IMO. It's not like Cube really needed a sequel anyway.
I thought one of the best things about Cube was its simplicity and small scale. Iirc the other 2 films get exploring the company and stuff? And building bigger cubes etc which is just dumb. The mystery is a great aspect, keeping you guessing and asking questions. It's actually a really well executed concept, it's not executed truly greatly but competently enough to make it a good little film. for what it is it's great. also I decided I didn't have many interesting new DVD's to watch and I had a half day at college, so I headed up town and totally splurged and bought all these films-- [img_thumb]http://25.media.tumblr.com/134bce1f6c1cec865ed5ead24f269c36/tumblr_n081x1Q5AV1r4khibo1_1280.jpg[/img_thumb] CeX's cheap as hell prices made up most of it, I love that store. There Will be Blood was 50p and half of them £1. The rest was from Fopp. I've never looked there for DVD's before since I view it mostly as a music store and I don't buy CD's etc, but it seems to actually have great selection. There's an entire section of films dedicated to Artificial Eye stuff, as well as a big foreign film section, and it's generally not too expensive, with some films being really cheap. Gonna have to start looking there more. im excited to start working through them. I've seen 3 or 4 before but that's 20+ films there including the Haneke boxset (10 films). [editline]30th January 2014[/editline] you will see i bought Casino and Raging Bull too lol ive not given up on Scorsese

Zero pretty much revolves around a guy who works for the company. Not a bad idea itself but I remember it was very poorly executed.
ew, DVDs
