Okay, I got two.
Oblivion
I had watched Elysium a week or two prior to watching Oblivion and was excited to see Oblivion. I liked Elysium, I thought the concept was alright but it was a lot of action and the plot was kind of simplistic. After watching Oblivion, I am absolutely blown away, some love it, some hate it as far as I have seen. I usually am not a sci-fi movie buff, but wow the level of detail, the idea, and visuals of this movie are fucking top notch. I swear I could go on for hours just talking about the visuals. I found the plot really engaging and it was well balanced with the action-y moments and slow moments. The soundtrack was fucking ace, great job by M83. I was expecting a plot twist because it couldn't be as simple as "Aliens took over and everyone left", but god damn the plot twist was just so amazing and as far as I have seen, original. But my fucking god the visuals, wow. Not even as much the destroyed earth but I love the way how they interpreted the future, I thought Elysium was well done but it did not seem like 150 years in the future. Great concept, really nice settings, Tom Cruise was great. I think they could have used better looking girls to be honest but maybe I am just seeing this too Hollywood.

Lone Survivor
Wow, where do I even begin. I had already known about Operation Red Wings and knew they had buffed up some of the details for the movie or made up some things like [sp]the final fight scene[/sp], and the title gave away the ending to anyone who thinks about it for a few seconds. I am a pretty big fan of war films, especially if they are following something really tragic that happens, because a lot of films just glorify how the US military is perfect. Black Hawk Down is one of my favorite films of all time, so I wasn't sure what to expect walking into this movie. I used to be a military equipment buff and was amazed with the attention paid to the equipment used by the soldiers in the movie, and it was all period correct. I liked the way the movie spent a little bit easing you into the setting and letting you build a personal connection with each of the four main Navy Seals as they joke with each other and talk about their personal lives. I wasn't so sure about Mark Wahlberg at first but he was fantastic, really a versatile actor. Same with Taylor Kitsch, he was great. All the actors did an amazing job of portraying the soldiers who put up a hard fight knowing damn well they were not going to make it out. But anyway, when the main problem actually occurred and the part of the movie that most people were waiting to see took place, holy fucking shit. I have never been so enveloped in a movie while watching, I honestly forgot I was in the theater and every few minutes I had to look over just to make sure I was still sitting next to my dad. When Wahlberg's character, Marcus Luttrel, first pulled the trigger, I saw it coming damn well but I still jumped in my seat. The movie got all slow-mo and quiet and you could hear Wahlberg's heavy breathing as he aimed down the scope, and his heart rate increasing with adrenaline and fear, as was mine from sucked into the action. I probably jumped in my seat about 7 or 8 times during the whole movie which is a lot for a movie that isn't supposed to be a thriller. I often found myself on the edge of my seat, my palms furiously sweating and squeezing the arm-rests while watching the Seal team put up their fight, wondering what mishap would occur next. At least 3 times during the film, and I say at least, probably more, the entire theater let out an audible "Gasp!" or sigh, and it was amazing just to hear how everyone in the audience was having the same exact emotional response. By the time the main fight was like 1/2 over, I had such a huge emotional attachment with the actors and the brave men they represented that when they each succumbed to their wounds or was killed I was on the verge of crying. I want to make it clear that I 100% would have cried had I not been sitting next to my dad who would have made fun of me :c. By the time the fight was over, I just had this strange feeling over my whole body like "this really happened, men really died doing what these actors are doing" and was just in awe at the bravery and spirit of the military. By far though, the most emotional part in the movie was after the "film" was over and they put together a slideshow dedicated to all the men, [sp]11 Navy Seals and 8 members of the US army[/sp] who were killed. They had a picture of each of the men with their fellow soldiers/unit, and then some of them included pictures of the fallen with their family, taken before their tour of duty. This is the part where my eyes started to water but I wiped away any tears from forming. It is just so sad seeing these men in pictures with their wife, family, kids that lost them. This was the first movie I have seen in theaters that brought me to tears (basically) and the first one I have seen in a while where almost everyone clapped at the end.

You should check out the behind the scenes of Oblivion. Its really amazing what they did for the visuals.
Oblivion is good, but I hated how it made every plot twist so predictable.
I didn't see the whole [sp]Tom Cruise Clone[/sp] twist coming. I thought that was rather well done.
I didn't see the whole [sp]Tom Cruise Clone[/sp] twist coming. I thought that was rather well done.
am I the only one who thinks that the twist was a blatant steal from [sp]moon?[/sp]
honestly I liked the movie a whole lot better before he found out everything, the beginning shots were amazing especially. [sp]What they were being told/thought in the beginning interested me way more.[/sp]

Still one of my favorites.
After Earth Review
How Can The Movie Be Real If Our Eyes Aren't Real.
Jaden Smith/10
ender's game - 8/10
going in knowing nothing about the book, and forgetting pretty much everything except that harrison ford is in it, this was really enjoyable.
the ending was aight but understandable.
I didn't see the whole [sp]Tom Cruise Clone[/sp] twist coming. I thought that was rather well done.
are you kidding? as soon as the movie started I was like 'they are gonna do a moon thing. i can see it already'.
[editline]5th February 2014[/editline]
pretty sure whoever decided to make that movie just saw moon and was like this is great! i want to make one just like this. but actiony-er.
Does anyone else hate it when a movie has a bunch of mooks exploding into ash in one hit from a monster or whatever, but when someone with a name gets blasted, they just have some bullshit flesh-wound?

i just watched it
i didnt like the ending that much
it was too "now you have learned a valuable lesson in life that was presented to you in the form of a movie that is actually a 2 hour metaphor"
also the entire idea (book included) is similar to starship troopers which was written years before.
i give it like a 7.9/10
The Square (2013)-10/10
One of the best documentaries ever.

It's got the same problem as Terminator 2 though, the kid is annoying as fuck
The Imposter 9/10
"A documentary centered on a young Frenchman who claims to a grieving Texas family that he is their 16-year-old son who has been missing for 3 years." - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1966604/
An incredibly well done documentary, definitely worth the watch guys
And the end, oh boy, it gives me chills
Flypaper
Bank heist film with some who did it twists. Fuck me that was bad. Friend invites me round for a film and I sit for 90 mins in front of Ashley Judd and Patrick Dempsey wise cracking lame gags with a supporting cast who should have been drowned at birth. It was so embarrassing I wanted the ground to swallow me up. This film is a piece of shit but actually had a good idea. Reminded me of that piece of shit Boondock Saints because of an awful soundtrack.
El Inferno
Mexican film aka Narco. Deported Mexican goes back home and gets involved with a drug cartel. Reviews were strong but the story was drawn out much too thinly. Over 2 hours it took to tell me drugs are bad and that the Mexicans cartel problem is too big. By the end I was dribbling over the chair arm begging for the fucking credits. Elizabeth Cervantes is a beautiful woman though, I was jealous. If this film had 30 mins shaved off it then the whole experience wouldn't have been too bad.

Literally the first time I've heard this comparison. I can understand Starship Troopers being similar to like "Armor", but story-wise the only thing similar with Starship Troopers and Ender's Game, is the fact that humans are fighting aliens that look like bugs.
Only one of them has frequent vaguely homoerotic imagery.
Or do both of them do that?
Only one of them has frequent vaguely homoerotic imagery.

The only thing Armor has is PTSD.

I wasn't consciously thinking of Moon when I saw it.

You should always be thinking of Moon.
God damn it, now I need to rewatch it.
Oblivion also made me think of "Rendezvous with Rama", [sp] with the whole "Unidentified big object coming towards Earth[/sp].
Frozen- 10/10
ok so this turned out to be pretty damn long but,
I watched this based purely off internet hype, since I never saw any trailers and didn't know the plot, and only had seen a few gifs of it on Tumblr... And it absolutely delivered, and then some.
I loved this film! Between this and Tangled I honestly think Disney are back on absolutely on top form. This was maybe even better than Tangled, and absolutely one of Disney's best. This film was just so nice and fun, but at the same time really did tug at my emotions even very early on (and throughout the film). "Do You Want To Build A Snowman" and "For The First Time in Forever" got the feels going earlier than expected :v: Overall this film dealt with some really important things that I'll address later that I didn't expect it to. The film has honestly left me emotionally drained and vulnerable... I did not expect it to go some of the ways it did. I'll discuss this at the end.
everything i loved about this film-
>the animation was absolutely gorgeous
>the direction was top notch
>thE LET IT GO SEQUENCE WAS PERFECT 10/10 A+ 100% !! !!!! It needs the Oscar cos fuck i love that song.
>I loved the dialogue. every single joke was on point. It was modern but not obvious. It wasn't too cheesy, it felt generally quite realistic and all worked well.
>The soundtrack is amazing and definitely one of Disney's best ever
>The characters are also some of Disney's best, and some of the best of the year. Three-dimentional, flawed, interesting, lovable, bending archetypes. Especially Elsa. A beautifully crafted, complex and vulnerable character. She suffers from depression, anxiety and panic attacks (I'll get to that) One of the best characters of the year, and honestly I think this is the best character Disney has ever had. It isn't the first time at all that Disney have twisted the basic fairy tale archetypes at all (The "prince" character especially has taken various forms and twists, going back to films like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast etc), but I thought Frozen executed it really well.
>SHOP DUDE WAS GAY DID ANYONE NOTICE THIS??????? THAT IS 100% A GUY IM REALLY HAPPY ABOUT THAT
>Olaf was a real character and not annoying comedy relief (literally the only thing that annoyed me was his song but even then I enjoyed parts of it. That's also the only issue I have with the film at all, and it really wasn't that bad)
>The film literally gave the best messages to children that any Disney film ever has. I think it's do to with the times. for one yea cool Shop Dude was gay and they gave no fucks about it as one, also the amazing ending with [sp]"true love" being sisterly love and not true love's kiss. I was SO FUCKING HAPPY at that. Like honestly I was like dying inside at how great it was. im sorry but yes. amazing. I loved the lead up to it and everything. One of the best parts of the film, when it's Anna and Kristoff are in the cart and Kristoff is going crazy at Anna for getting engaged to someone she doesn't fully know, cos she's infatuated but then it turns out he wasn't who he seemed and he's a bad guy and THATS SUCH A GREAT MESSAGE TO ME cos I hate how idealised "true love" is in a lot of these kids movies or whatever. Then after that it makes u think she's truly in love with Kristoff but I knew it wasn't gonna go that way cos then it'd be going against its own message, but at the same time I loved all the build up to it cos it was done so well and for a moment I forgot about that and did believe they were in love but then Elsa saves her!!!! cos sisterly love motherfucker yea. none of these goddamn idealised fairy tale LIES. But then Anna and Kristoff stay together anyway (but not rushing to get married or anything) cos they realised they want to be together and they'll just see how it goes and hopefully it'll work out but at least they're not rushing into things![/sp]
gettin the srs now. Themes, metaphors, general praises to writing etc ~tumblr mode engage~:
This will probably be especially ramble-y as I'm just writing it as it comes, and there's some really big stuff going on in this film that I've seen little attention to, and I want to make a point of it and I'd love for some of you guys to read it and see what you think?
Anyway,
The film deals with major problems like depression, anxiety and panic attacks, and their effects on others. And it is an accurate portrayal. I think this is very important given its audience. While it's generally children, teenagers and especially teenage girls are a major part of the audience as well and I think it's really important to let people understand things like this. be it a child learning to support their older sister who won't play with them any more, to someone suffering from depression themselves and maybe it'll help them realise some things about themselves. I don't think I'm off point to say that the film is really about a depressed girl struggling through her problems, and a sister who doesn't understand what's going on with her but loves her and slowly learns to sympathise and care for her, and the whole ice powers thing is a metaphor around that.
See "Do You Wanna build a Snowman". A great song, catchy yes, but very very sad. i think it's safe to say that the song is about the effects of the above listed conditions on those around you. Anna is young, and can't understand why Elsa is ignoring her and always stays in her room, and throughout the film, even years on, we see that she still blames herself for it (she mentions something like that to Hans, for instance- how one day she just locked her door and didn't come out and didn't play any more. She also repeatedly states that Elsa shuts her out. Every time that was said I died a bit inside tbh. Heartbreaking.) because she doesn't know what's going on and no one will say what the problem is, so she assumes it's her own fault. Which destroyed me, and made me horribly sad. But at the same, through the visuals of the song we also see it from Elsa's perspective- a young girl scared to even leave her room, having real trouble with crowds, having trouble doing relatively small things in the fear she won't be able to do it (holding the scepter for even a few seconds). Elsa suffers from depression.
There are two separate scenes in this film that deal with panic attacks and triggers. Her triggers are crowds and physical contact, and I'd say when she's reminded the hurt she caused to Anna, since all of these things remind her of how different she considers herself and how potentially dangerous she thinks she could be, and how she's a terrible person for it. Maybe fairytale circumstances, but very real problems and situations. I would even argue that her powers are a metaphor for panic attacks etc. It literally shows how her mental issues are affecting her. See how uncomfortable she is during the ball, and how when Anna says she wants to get married to Hans she's not pleased and won't allow it but she's holding herself together, then Anna wants Hans' brothers to live in the castle and she absolutely loses it. She has a visceral reaction to this which is of panic and the urge to escape and she's filled with legitimate fear. It's a trigger to her, setting off a panic attack which is physically shown via her using her ice powers to keep everyone away from her (amazing touch imo). She runs away, and creates her own palace. To the town, she is no longer the Queen. She's the witch. But like many witch(like) characters, she's misunderstood. We know this, but the townsfolk etc don't. To us she's a young woman with struggles that she's tried to run from and problems she can't control. To the townsfolk, she's a witch who left them in eternal winter. (Note also the reference to Joan of Arc in "Do You Wanna build a Snowman", who was also a young woman with good intent condemned for witchcraft)
Her second panic attack is perhaps even worse. It's the one inside her ice castle (yet another witch image), with her sister. This time, Anna really tries to help, but the closer she gets the worse she makes it. She is totally helpless. (I think the icy wind is another metaphor, how Elsa won't let anyone close etc) Also, I think Marshmallow (the snow golem thing) also works as her creating barriers to keep people away from her.
However, even though Anna cannot possibly comprehend what Elsa is going through, she at least learns to trust her sister. She learns to let go (sorry) of the pain her sister has caused her, and accept that what she's going through isn't just some childish tantrum.
I also want to take some time to talk about Let It Go. It's one of the best scenes of 2013 overall imo. Like, fuckin top 5 material. Not only because it's an absolutely fantastic song with some brilliant visuals to accompany, it's a pivotal moment in the film and really important to understanding Elsa's character. The song is basically saying, "fuck it. I'm gonna be who I am. I'm not going to restrain myself just because it's not normal, or because you don't like it." The song is about how she is going to be who she is regardless. It goes further, in fact. How she embraces it, leaving behind the kingdom of Arendelle. ("My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around; And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast; I'm never going back, the past is in the past", "That perfect girl is gone; Here I stand; In the light of day; Let the storm rage on; The cold never bothered me anyway")
But also, it's a bit more than that. It's about overcoming her fears and problems, how getting away has helped her because she's not longer oppressed by her parents and society's views. ("It's funny how some distance;Makes everything seem small; And the fears that once controlled me; Can't get to me at all", "No right, no wrong, no rules for me; I'm free!") and also how she's grown up and is her own woman, and how she's even left the problems behind. ("That perfect girl is gone", "The cold never bothered me anyway!")
Also, I love how they changed her costume, hair etc when she was singing the song, as it shows she's changed as a person.
Sorry for the super duper long post, but I was just so captured by this film. I absolutely fucking loved it. I think it's the best Disney film I've ever seen. Everything is just incredible. Elsa's character is just so so great that I can't actually praise her writing enough. 100% recommend to absolutely anybody.

I would say 3/10.
Good concepts, adequate visuals, but everyone was half-assing it.
