The Monuments Men
I'm going to try avoiding spoiling too much.
Pacing is not good. The movie starts off going 20 miles a minute, and then somewhere past the middle it starts to slow down to an acceptable speed; even then it constantly jerks around to different locations and set pieces, never letting much sink in.
It doesn't give you a chance to connect with any of the characters, leaving me confused and not knowing many if not all of the guys' names. I was also at a loss as to what the point of whatever they were doing was sometimes. I know why they were in Europe, I know what their overall goal was, but everyone jumps around to so many places in such a short amount of time that I would lose track of it all.
I'll try to list all the Monuments Men: George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Downton Abbey Guy, NBC Executive Guy From Seinfeld, French Guy, and German Guy.
Bill Murray and NBC Executive Guy have a sort of rivalry with each other for a good part of the movie, but the reason for it is one line in a 10-second scene, so when they resolve differences and become friends it feels hollow. Plus, like 10 minutes after we're introduced to everyone, they all split up to go to various European cities for long periods of time, so usually you only see Matt Damon by himself or John Goodman and the French Guy. When they're all acting like lifetime friends and telling each other how much of an honor it is to serve with one another, it misses on a certain level, since for most of the movie they're hundreds of miles apart doing completely different things.
All the actors gave adequate performances. They're good actors, great even, just they've all done much better in other movies. No one felt like they were pouring their souls into this. No one was really used often enough or well enough. The only reason Bill Murray, John Goodman, and the NBC Executive Guy are in this movie is because no one would have gone to see it otherwise.
If you've ever seen, like, any modern WW2 movie, you'll be making a lot of comparisons. I don't mean Monuments is a blatant copier, I'm just saying that George Clooney probably watched Inglorious Basterds and Saving Private Ryan before making this.
Now to start talking about the good stuff.
There were plenty of touching moments, and a even few times where you go "Hell yeah!"
This movie bleeds authenticity. Outfits, vehicles, military stuff, and, most importantly, the art. It all looks great. If they were skimping somewhere, I didn't notice it.
The messages and overall themes are great. If the arts and achievements of a society disappear, it's like the society never existed in the first place. Over a thousand years of modern human history was going to be blipped into nothingness, and there were people who cared enough to die to prevent that from occurring. There's places where that actually happened, like in Khmer Rouge-occupied Cambodia. It's absolutely horrifying, and that's just one small country.
Really, if you're an art buff, or even just have taken an art history class, this is your movie.
In conclusion:
6/10. Better than average, but not by much.
Okay acting done by great actors who were there to get asses in seats and a plot that needed a dose of Adderall, coupled with a heartfelt message and considerable amounts of art porn.
Synecdoche, New York
9.8/10
Sometimes I see a film that changes how I look at films. This is one of them.

how does this even work
I dunno. I've not read the book but I'm imagining the film will be a retelling of the BTS stuff, fictional retelling of what happened on set etc? Franco actually did something similar with his 60 min docudrama "Interior. Leather Bar." which is about the lost 40 mins of "Cruising", only it's more of a recreation of the process of making the film. Ive not seen the film but I'm pretty interested. It's a cool concept. Maybe The Disaster Artist will take a similar approach.
i think interior leather bar looks really good from the trailer

Not so much hyped as I'm interested in how it might play it.
Also, I pity the person who has to play Tommy Wiseau.
idk Tommy Wiseau would be a very challenging role imo
maybe they will get tommy wiseau to play tommy wiseau
Fire Walk With Me - 8/10
I expected confusing, but I did not expect it to be so goddamn dark.

Very good movie. I haven't seen that many kidnap films and for some reason I expected it would be okayish. But it actually was interesting all the way through. Definitely can recommend.
How is it confusing? If were all rating it good and you hear good things about then, well, it must be good. Go see it, I'm not telling why it's good.
But... he's asking for a reason why it's good, not just if it's good.

It's made by the same guys who did Cloudy, which was great, so maybe that has something to do with it.
The Lego Movie
10/10 go fucking watch it dipshit
why are you still reading this post and not on the way to the nearest theater
These positive reviews if the Lego movie are baffling. Like not cos I saw it and thouget it was shit (not seen it) just I had zero interest and assumed it was a shitty cash grab. I'm interested now.

Seriously, I am beyond surprised by the reception to the film. I'm almost in denial, telling myself I don't need to see it...but I have yet to see someone say something negative about it.
12 Years a Slave
I find it extremely difficult, to somehow rate this movie - to make it justice, and express what I'm feeling right now. I wanted to see it from the first moment I heard that Steve McQueen is making such film, but right now I feel rather underwhelmed.
My biggest grip with this film, is that you barely feel this twelve years passing. Even simply because of its title you'd expect a tragical odyssey, a journey full of dramatic turns. Besides Solomon's hair turning a bit grey at the end, it's hard to spot the passing of time, and it's almost impossible to feel it (best example is [sp]Solomon and the slaves serving the Judge. Guessing from the fact, that the little girl later was Patsey's daughter at least 3 or 4 years have passed. I'm not sure if it were even 10 minutes in screen time, and it felt like less than a week that they've gone missing[/sp]).
The other thing is, that despite Ejiofor's brilliant acting, Solomon Northup's character still was lacking something. Saying that he was underdevelopment would probably be too much, but at the end I didn't felt like anything has changed. He's a very static character, one-dimensional almost. The last thing that irritated me was Hans Zimmer's score. Maybe I'm nitpicking, but it's annoying when I hear for the fourth time the same notes from Inception, or even his earlier works.
But on the other hand I utterly respect this film for what it showed, and how it showed. Northup's story deserved to be adapted and it was done well. Many times I felt genuine sadness and sympathy for characters on screen. It was brutal, but not entirely for "white guilt" sake, and for that I'm thankful to McQueen. He delivers what he's known for - besides very cold and distant style, we also get beautiful cinematography and stunning acting. Suck it American Hustle (a film that according to its director was made solely for "great characters and marvelous cast"), but this film had the best ensemble cast last year. Everyone was equally amazing, from main Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender (who was more terrifying than DiCaprio in Django) and the amazing Lupita Nyong'o to small roles of Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Garret Dillahunt and Benedict Cumberbatch. All of them were top notch.
As I said before, it's really hard to rate this film. On a numeric scale it fiddles between 7 and 8, yet I wouldn't be mad if it will ultimately win an Oscar for Best Picture (although I still haven't seen "Her"). And I know that many people are against long films, but I think this one would only profit from additional one or two hours to flesh out more Solomon Northup's journey.
The Lego Movie - 8/10
A memorable and fun movie. Go watch it.
The Lego Movie 9/10
Way better than it has any right to be. It was clearly made with actual heart and good intentions, and doesn't feel like a soulless cash grab at all.
Captain Phillips
Another great movie. Some tense moments and that ending.
Moon
8/10
Man, I love this movie so much. I rewatched it for the second time and the story is just very nice. It's not 100% proof (aside from what's already the norm in the movie) but as a whole it's pretty good. Good actors too. If you haven't seen this then I suggest watching it.
End of Watch
Fuck man.
This is my new all time favorite and I can't explain why. This is my kind of movie, it's simple, it's extremely realistic and it's the first movie I've ever watched where I could actually empathize with the characters and feel the gradual build up of tension, even when it wasn't that clear. [sp] The ending made me want to cry so bad. [/sp]
10 out of fucking 10
yea end of watch is pretty good. reminds me of "Harsh Times", check it out if you haven't seent it
[editline]8th February 2014[/editline]
wait, it's by the same director, of course they're similar

I'm right there with you, I posted a couple pages back with the same type of response.
Also, which Saw movie should I stop at? Is it 3, or? Cause I know after a bit they started to become.. Rather dull.
The Monuments Men
9/10 - one of the better WWII films I've seen.
