The War of the Roses
4/5
A nice little dark comedy. Danny DeVito was a pretty good director, back in the day. Shame he doesn't do it that much these days, apart from It's Always Sunny episodes.
Rango
5/5
If I must defend this review, you have not seen the movie.
The Man With No Name cameo alone made Rango worth it.
Blue is the Warmest Color.
9.5/10
Fucking amazing movie, not surprising why it was so well received at Cannes.

Also the movie has a lot of great music as well.
Nebraska
7.5/10
I don't want to get old. Like, never. It's so sad and depressing, but final scenes made it worth it.

Yeah, seeing the main character's dad like that was depressing. [sp]But at least he got to show off his truck in that town at least, well at least sort of his truck.[/sp]
I just watched Beetlejuice tonight for the first time. My mum was always telling me that it was a good movie it's surprising I hadn't seen it before.
10/10 I really enjoyed it.
Oh I also saw 2 other movies recently.
Agora
8/10, shame this movie didn't get more attention. The ending is tragic as fuck, but it's very thought provoking.
A Serious Man
9/10
The Coen brothers did it again. Great movie, and funny as hell.
Dredd
7.5/10
I liked the writing and the action, but some of the CGI in the movie was fucking with my eyes during the combat.
Cold Comes the Night 5/10
Eh, some good performances but all the other aspects are borderline average.
Lego Movie - 9/10
Wild Style makes me cringe every time though

I was told by so many friends to watch this movie. Everyone was telling me how good it was. Well, they were all wrong.
The biggest problem is that it's just so formulaic. The plot is extremely predictable, and there are so many cliche' scenes that you could literally play a drinking game taking a shot for each one you notice. You will be smashed by the end of it, I shit you not.
The characters are extremely stereotypical cardboard cut-outs of ones you've seen one million times in films. You have the typical group of annoying cunts: dumb unlikeable and extremely shy and cringy protagonist, the hot girl he ends up getting laid with because...film logic, the unfunny comedy relief shitstain that you want shot dead 2 minutes after you're introduced to him, etc. you get it.
There are probably just a couple of twists you don't see coming, but they don't make up for the rest of the disaster that this film is. Kevin Spacey does an ok job but doesn't save it. It just felt so lazy, the cinematography is meh, the music is generic, the actors are terrible and the story is boring. Don't waste your time like I did. 3/10

finally someone who agrees that this is a fairly mediocre movie.

Count me in as well, 21 wasn't all that great.
That was the one with the unfittingly-handsome savant that counts card to pay for college, right?
Monuments Men 2/10
Really, really dull. A very good example of why you shouldn't see a movie just because of its actors.
Elysium - 3/10
I should not of excited myself to watch this. It was crap.
Ladri di Biciclette (Bicycles Thieves) - 10/10
What an amazing experience. The devastated post-WWII Rome is the background of a widespread & personal drama- poverty and the story of a father of two that gets a job after two years of unemployment, but the bicycle he needs to do said job gets stolen on his first day of work. Thus his quest to find his stolen bicycle in the capital begins, with the aid of his son.
The music and the shots give a sense of isolation I have yet to see in a movie. and they don't even need western-style wide as fuck shots, man, I don't even know how they pull it off, they just do.
I found myself getting all emotional at this movie and it's hard to do otherwise.
From a historical point of view, this movie is special in many ways- first of all, the middle finger to the studio system. Cinecittà was air-raided, so there were no sets to film in. Thus the city, the reality, and the landmarks became the set, bystanders became actors. Shit son that was inthinkable of at the time.
Also because it's a tragedy. Under Fascism, both national and personal tragedies were forbidden. This movie was like a wake-up call. like a 'look, look the reality of things. This ain't no set, this is the reality all around you'
Only mishap are the subtitles. The original english subtitles are utter garbage and they often don't match what the actor say. Look for a recent, more accurate subbed version instead.

Horror of Dracula - 7/10
Acting was good, editing was very good ( I particularily liked those shots with things out of focus right in front of the camera, gave the idea Harker was being 'spied on' )
Horror elements were.. meek. Beside a shot with Lee's face all splattered with blood, there was little to rattle me bones.
I'm torn between considering the story good or bad. The beginning is faithful to the source material, with the dialogue between harker and dracula being word-by-word accurate. Then they went 'meh, fuck this' and went all off the radar because.. reasons? The story they made up contained all the elements familiar to the book tho, the vampirized lucy, dr van helsing, dracula pulling smooth tricks to get all the ladies, and wasn't half bad per se.
Also I have to complain about color. Yes, I went there. Color is used in a sort of 'spectacular' way, to show viewers this new technology. Might've been spectacular then, but has the same effect of 'in your face imax 3D' to me now.
I mean half the movie was like this-
light blue walls + cherry wooden furniture + charachter dressed in bright red
red pattern wallpaper + brass stuff + charachter dressed in bottle green
blue lights due to night, orange as fuck candlelight cast on charachters
Did nobody at any point thought being as colored as a children's cartoon wasn't appropriate for a horror movie?
Nitpicking aside, it felt like a very enjoyable B movie worth giving a shot.
I still like Murnau's > Fisher's best. Also I'd rather wach this instead of Coppola's any day.
leon: the professional
7.5/10
gary oldman was fucking spectacular. best part of the movie.
Incredibly wrong opinion
Wadjda (وجدة)
Apparently it's the very first theatrical feature film from Saudi Arabia. That's just... woah.
And the production was...:
Wadjda was filmed on the streets of Riyadh, which often made it necessary for the director to work from the back of a van, as she could not publicly mix with the men in the crew. Often, she could only communicate via walkie-talkie and had to watch the actors on a monitor. This made it difficult to direct: "It made me realise the need to rehearse and to develop an understanding for each scene before we shot it."
okayyyy............
Anyway, this film is really wonderful. Lots of heart, lots of great acting, very natural child actors which earns very big points and a nice sweet unravelling of scenes. It challenges a large aspect of the culture around, whether it's gender roles, humility, faith or simple ambition approaches. I'm reminded of "Children of Heaven", an Iranian film but as I remember that film was a lot more depressive, haven't seen it in years.
Worth a look, I personally loved it. Sure it could have dug deeper with what it challenged, but honestly if it really wanted to make a huge deal out of it, they would never had let them film in Saudi Arabia. I think how it tackled those situations with subtleness and ease is more in tune with the main girl's personality in the movie anyway. Quality score by Max Richter and terrific lead performance make it wholeheartedly soothing and uplifting in the end. Good, genuine chemistry between the kids, and that's rare.
Antichrist: 8/10
I think I just fucked up.
no u did right antichrist is A+
What do you people think of The Dark Knight Rises?
What do you people think of The Dark Knight Rises?
decent-ish..
batmen 1 and 2 were neat but this felt bloated and unfocused, there are a handful of neat sequences. The sound mixing for Bane's voice is horrible and anne hathaway is dull as a dud here. Nice image quality though, you can taste the buildings.
no u did right antichrist is A+
Yeah, but Rusty's opinion scares me :(
What do you people think of The Dark Knight Rises?
It's alright even with it's flaws, but the first two films are way better. I'd probably give it a 6 or 7/10.
yeah but he'd slap you for giving batmon 3 a 6/10.
I'm just eager to see his new one seeing as matt mac is on his stride to getting his career steaming.
Rises was decent. It was fun I suppose. Awful script.Messy, full of plot holes with pacing issues and dodgy dialogue. [sp]Talia's[/sp] death scene was laughably bad. The characters were often stupid... His back went from broken to hard as steel in only 3 months or something which is dumb as fuck. [sp]banes death[/sp] also sucked and the ending was a bad copout

who cares. Lars von Trier is one of the single best directors working. He's made some of the best films ive literally ever seen. Breaking The Waves is in my all time top 3... not that I could tell you the other 2 cos that shit's impossible. But yes Breaking The Waves is one of the greatest films of all time imo. Dude is a master and Antichrist is one of his better works, even if the consensus is its one of his weakest... I love it a lot. It's very different from his other stuff though, but then again his films can kinda be broken into waves/his trilogies. His first films being the Europa trilogy, using weird techniques and pushing technological boundaries to create post-modern noir thrillers. Abandoning a lot of the stuff he did for stripped down, handheld human dramas in his Golden Heart trilogy, his America Trilogy set on a stage (although pretty similar to his Golden Heart trilogy- the third is not made yet though), his Depression trilogy (antichrist being the first film in it) using very beautiful and striking imagery and focusing a lot on themes and symbolism rather than actual human stories, although the films are still very realistic in their own way. Cant wait for Nymphomaniac, got a ticket booked for a double-bill on the 22nd.
Primal Fear 7.5/10
Really good movie. Edward Norton is very young in this, and it's one of his best roles imo. Nice murder mystery with lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing.
Untouchable 9/10
By far one of the funniest films I have watched in a long time.
