Loki as a serious character has been forever ruined for me by Tumblr.
the thor and loki interactions in the dark world are what made the movie for me
This post contains spoilers for Watchmen throughout
I didn't hate the final quarter as much as you did (I liked the movie quite a bit overall) but yeah, I have to agree with a lot of your points. The opening credits were absolutely perfect. I didn't really expect Snyder to carry out a lot of the back story and tone of the world so well. Plus it had the 'Golden Age' feel to it, which is something I've never seen anywhere else in a live action superhero movie.
Yeah, like I said the movie really "soured" for me - it burnt off a lot of my good feelings from the rest of the movie.
The worldbuilding in the opening was brilliant - there was simply no way to insert all of the background from the comic into the movie (unless they did a twelve-part miniseries, or split it into two or three three-hour films as is so popular today).
Rorschach's arc was handled pretty well and I really enjoyed Jackie Earle Haley's performance. I think I really liked every major actor except for the one who did Silk Spectre II.
Yeah, Rorschach was handled the best, by both the writing (apart from changing how he offed the child-killer) and the acting. Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Comedian), Patrick Wilson (Nite Owl), and Billy Crudup (Manhattan) were pretty good as well.
And yeah, Veidt was adapted extremely poorly and is pretty much inferior to his comic version in every way. But, I dunno, despite all that I thought the film had enough to pull through in the end.
I think what really "broke" the movie for me was Veidt. Not just "oh wow, this performance is bad" but Ozymandias - from the second page of the comic - is such a huge part of the story. If I could sum up the failure of the performance - and as a result, the movie - in one sentence it would be this: I never sympathized with Adrian Veidt.
In the movie, he's so emotionally disconnected, serious, and overall odd that it didn't work for me. From the moment you see him, you feel something is off about this guy. In the comic, you do get the sense that he's disconnected from humanity (often viewing people and society as little more than factors in an equation), but you empathize with him: he jokes, he smiles, he gets downcast, he has doubts...
For instance, telling his story (and his connection to Alexander and Rameses) is changed from the last confession of a man pouring out his heart into a rich man harshly criticizing his inferiors. His tearfully relieved "I did it! I DID IT!" is gone. His claim that "I made myself feel every death" comes across as hollow and untrue.
When I read the book, I didn't really agree with his plan. However, I empathized for the man. I felt the weight on his shoulders, felt his loneliness, and saw that this was not a decision made lightly. That strong emotional connection was totally gone in the movie. You're supposed to feel conflicted about what happened because you understand the people on each side.
Worse, the finale manages to screw over the other three main characters.
Dan's "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" and subsequent punch-up on Ozymandias was cheesy and stupid. Worse, the point was already made with the line: "Dan, grow up. My new world demands less obvious heroism." It felt pointless and only made Dan look dumber and Adrian look more apart-from-humanity.
Laurie and Dr Manhattan share a big smooch - in front of Dan, no less. This obfuscates Dan and Laurie's growing relationship - in the comic, the two of them end up together in Karnak, symbolizing that she has left Manhattan behind. But this is just confusing - do the two still have feelings for each other? In addition, Dr. Manhattan's absence is now much more of a factor now that he is blamed for the deaths of millions. Does he still just leave for a less confusing galaxy? Is he still "watching" the world?
But the final insult was the changing of the line Nothing ever ends. In the comic, it's used in the last time we see Manhattan and Ozymandias. By suggesting that "nothing ever ends," Jon implies that, despite being effective in the short term, Adrian's drastic measures may not have saved humanity forever. As he leaves, we see Adrian looking back with a concerned expression. Jon has introduced doubt into the man who was previously so very, very assured in his plan. By removing this scene, it implies that the duo are both completely fine with what happened, erasing some of the ambiguity and humanity that made it so strong. Worse, by having Laurie say it, it robs the quote of its power. Manhattan's unique perspective on time and miracles carries much more weight when discussing the future, whereas Laurie doesn't have any sort of precognitive abilities.
As a side note, if it seems like I'm just saying "it wasn't like that in the comic" that's for two reasons.
First, I try to see it as "it was good in the comic because it was well-written" rather than "it was good in the comic because it happened first". I was actually pleasantly surprised at how the squid's absence barely bothered me.
Second, the movie is very close to the comic in most other ways. Many lines from the script are direct quotes, and Snyder even kept a copy of the book on hand while shooting for reference. As a result, whenever anything is changed it is very noticeable and very easy to compare to the source. Comparatively, a movie like Man of Steel or Thor samples from many, many sources so "it wasn't like that in the comic" isn't as relevant.

Eternal Sunshine for The Spotless Mind

I never knew that Jim Carrey could be the lead role in a film that would make me tear up a bit
Spring Breakers

I'm a massive sucker for romance so I'll probably like it.
fuck it, I'll start downloading it now and watch it tomorrow
Out of the Furnace - 7/10
pretty underrated movie, you could tell they kind of drew a lot of inspiration from Deer Hunter. Do yourself and favor and don't read about the plot before you watch this, it'll have more impact if you don't. wasn't a huge fan of the ending though
woody harrelson is so good at playing unpredictable psychos
meanwhile christian bale plays redneck jesus

If you love Folk music, this is the movie for you. And it's also made by the Coen brothers, which makes it all the better.

it was sooooo bad and it was trying to be all artsy and it just looked cheesy and stupid and the acting was awful and the fact that they think just because a third of the film is [sp]women shaking their asses and getting their tits out[/sp] and just becase selena gomez and vanessa hudgens and those two other girls in bikinis through the whole movie or whatever out that their target audience (men probably) is going to love it

spring break yall. sprang brank. sprnnggg brrrrnnngggg foreverrrrr
All Is Lost
well.. 2013 sure is quite the boat movie year.
This one, is a little outside of the other disaster zones. In that we're all alone. Yes, I'm getting the Gravity feel here.
Thing is, this one is unique in that the actor here is totally great. This fella is well into his 70s and he's doing a movie like this, which is just admirable.
The film itself is a very well constructed journey of tranquility and challenge. Some may feel "been there, done that", but I found it warm, inviting and very intriguing.
My main complaint is... the picture quality. Now this is weird considering we're well into the 21st century but there's this dumb blocky, gradient thing going on when it fades... I dunno what to call it. The blu-ray is riddled with that crap, wtf. It's not too distracting but just wow.
I really admire the camera work too because in close quarters I know it can't be easy to navigate the shot you want. The camera flows very well and provides a nice convincing feel that we're with him in that boat and we can see the peril he faces.
Worth checking out for a neat night-time watch.
Zack & Miri Make a Porno
Beasts of the Southern Wild
not enough love for this movie from folks, hardly know anyone who watched that.
My Neighbor Totoro
Despite how crazy weird the movie is (catbus), there were some things that left me confused, and there were some things that I would have preferred to have stayed synonymous (like the girls are actually imagining Totoro in order to cope with their mom being in the hospital); but like Beasts of the Southern Wild, there are some slightly vague messages about the environment and life.
The animation and art are just amazing. Shame it runs at 90 minutes.
9.5/10 because I'm a sucker for Hayao Miyazaki.
There are other ways of interpreting it.
http://ihogeek.com/2012/04/10/two-new-ways-to-watch-totoro-you-wont-like-either-one-part-one/
Love totoro... really wonderful film. Shame I didn't watch that as a kid though. I didn't think it was "weird" at all considering what's out there :/
The catbus was mesmerising.
I don't think I've ever disliked any of Hayao Miyazaki's feature films. Unfortunately I haven't seen his 'The Wind Rises' yet but I've heard it's great. Plus it has Hideaki Anno as the voice for the main character, that's pretty damn cool.

ive defended this film enough but basically the cheese is on purpose u are not meant to enjoy the hedonism that is in the first part of the film, the target audience isnt teenage boys. well i mean it is but not because its some awful vapid party Project X shit- more like cos its some Michael Haneke stuff where u are lured in and then its something else and it will probably piss you off because it goes against conventions and expectations, or maybe you will love it for different reasons than you expected to, but probably you will hate it for it not being the vapid shit you wanted. I wouldn't say it's a flaw of the film, rather I'd say it's the point of it.
The lightning paced lifestyle of the 21st century leaves our generation stuck in perpetual boredom and people do stupid shit to try and counter that, be it going out and getting absolutely trashed, snorting coke, robbing shit. The montages of tits and ass and parties show that, it glorifies it to the point of ridiculousness and keeps going so that you think it's stupid. You look back and you think "this is fucking ridiculous" or even better "this is fucking boring". It turns these parties into boredom. People go to Spring Break because of this boredom and go all out because it's the only real chance they get. But also, Faith especially goes on about her never wanting it to end, she wants to stay there forever etc. because their lives are so boring and they need something, anything, interesting in their lives. That's why they take so many photos, buy crappy memorabilia etc. To hold on to it. Look at it and think, "man. my life was interesting for that one week". Then their dream comes true and it's not at all what it seemed. To some it's not what they wanted, to the other two it's more than what they wanted.
The film is aimed at Generation Y but not because it's trying to appeal to them. You said you watched it cos Selena Gomez is hot. That's a testament if there ever was one quite honestly. Korine wanted u to watch the film and piss you off in the exact same way Michael Haneke remade his own film, Funny Games, 10 years later, this time in English with famous Hollywood actors at the height of the torture porn movement- so that dumb teens go see it and are pissed the fuck off and its revealed that they are actually kind of sick for enjoying watching people be murdered in really awful ways. I think Spring Breakers is not so condemning of the lifestyle it portrays though, I know Korine said that he's actually interested in it, but I do think it tries to show the darker side and it does. Its a pretty extreme dark side but the film isn't meant to be realistic, its made like a music video, Korine called it a "pop poem" and uses a "liquid narrative" (both quotes his words) which makes 100% sense to me. It plays on caricature and archetype, but especially with Alien it manages to create a lot of depth to them. Imo Alien as a character does not get the recognition he deserves as an incredibly well written, multi-faceted and deep character. Imo the best character of 2013. He also is hedonistic, but he's insecure, he's sad and lonely, he's a bad dude but he's trying to be good. Trying to help these girls, show them what they want. The girls are the real evil, they drag Alien down further and end up [sp]getting him killed[/sp]. We see before the final confrontation that Alien does not want to do it. I think mainly of the scene where he's loading the guns in the kitchen. He's shitting it and doesn't want to do it, but he was pressured into it by the girls. The girls are the evil, that gun fellatio scene was a major turning point in the narrative and character drives, showing the real side of the two remaining girls and of Alien. So great. Totally flipped everything. The best scene of 2013 for me.
Spring Breakers is visually amazing imo, and a beautiful critiquing but not condemning view of youth culture and American excess, but it also shows the spiritual side to it. Spring Break Forever is Alien's mantra, he keeps saying it because it's what he wants, Spring Break is his enlightenment and his nirvana. "Bikinis and big booties y'all, that's what life's all about!", it's hedonistic yes but I do think its pretty spiritual.

well its not a fim for everyone so ~thats ok~
[editline]22nd February 2014[/editline]
maybe watch an interview or something with Harmony Korine though to get a feel for what the film will be cos I think that might help in kinda "getting" it you know? not that you need to or anything but it might add some stuff to it
the main theme to the movie is a skrillex song
you are reading things into the movie that simply are not there
it's an idiot's take on arthouse with a script an edgy 15 year old could have written
you are seeing intelligence where there is none. it's not too late to pull out and go 'oh. i guess my own intelligence lead me to believe there was more to this movie than intended', we will understand.
its not like im the only person who sees this?? fuckin Werner Herzog said its one of the most important film of the decade and really amazing. he called up James Franco personally to tell him that its one of the best films hes seen, at least in a long time. and if he says it's goddamn great then im gonna stick with my opinion that is's goddamn great. If any living person has an important voice on cinema it's Werner Herzog. He knows cinema better than anyone else.
