no one person is going to be right about everything. i bet if warner discussed the movies themes with harmony, harmony would be like 'yeah. totally. yep. yeah that's totally what that scene meant. i knew i was a genius.'
it's just a lucky fluke that some smart people assumed things about the movie that seriously were not intended. basically herzog is wrong.
can't be THAT bad..
not sure if it can be THAT good either..
I'm gonna have to dig into it some time, but after I see Bling Ring first :)
I wouldn't say its a fluke, his films have had a strong following since Kids, or at least Gummo (and then Kids gaining attention since it was written by Korine). Im not surprised that you hate Harmony Korine cos lots of people do, I mean he's a unique filmmaker with a style that not everyone will like and im not saying that as a negative towards you. I understand totally how people can hate his films. But personally I love them (except Mister Lonely) and see things in them. i see a beauty in Gummo, a film often ranked one of the most disturbing and strange films made, that isn't often matched even by filmmakers like Bergman who strive to find beauty and meaning in the world and are highly acclaimed for it (not to shoot Bergman down at all). I don't think it's a fluke if he's worked with similar motifs and themes over almost 20 years and delivered. And at the same time though, style is allowed over substance because in Korine's case the style is the substance. Or part of it, at least. Even if his films don't always have, or at times are lacking in, a specific and consistent message or theme or moral throughout the entire film (but I'd argue that especially in a film like Gummo, while not every scene ties into the overarching stories or moral, they are important in and of themselves and have a reason to be there), his movies are always interesting to me (and I think that's the main thing. To some people Korine is fascinating, to others he's boring, too weird, there's not enough plot to hold you etc which is fair enough)and provoke strong, raw emotion and I think that in cases that can be enough. I know a lot of people call Korine a troll or whatever whos just fucking with everyone and tbh I kind of agree, the dude is a total joker, especially when he was younger he just took the piss all the time on talk shows etc and even now he just straight up lies about really random stuff and makes up stories but he's also a good artist and I don't see why he can't be a prankster and a good filmmaker. (i suppose that point is a bit of a tangent but ive heard it used against him a lot)
i dont think Herzog was wrong but Im not gonna say youre wrong for not seeing it, I saw meaning and you didnt well whatever film is subjective and everyone sees stuff differently and thats how it is and thats one of the great things about art I suppose
its not like im the only person who sees this?? fuckin Werner Herzog said its one of the most important film of the decade and really amazing. he called up James Franco personally to tell him that its one of the best films hes seen, at least in a long time. and if he says it's goddamn great then im gonna stick with my opinion that is's goddamn great. If any living person has an important voice on cinema it's Werner Herzog. He knows cinema better than anyone else.
Quentin Tarantino has an important voice in cinema, and he thought The Lone Ranger was the best film he saw last year.
Brilliant people can also have shitty tastes.
Not nearly the voice herzog has tho tbf, he's basically the number 1 lol but I heard lone survivor was a really good movie? I didn't see it but that appeared to ve the consensus. But yeah I take your point
it's actually making me mad that there's an argument about whether or not spring breakers is a good movie
what was the plot of the movie? tell me.

Girls succumbing to their hedonistic tendencies using Spring Break as an outlet, who then meet a man willing to give them their fantasies. Then, when everything crumbles, they [sp]just kinda leave with no problem because they've had their fill.[/sp] To me, the film was a hyper vision of what makes spring break appealing, showing the audience exactly how gross it is, and by that merit, it did its job wonderfully.
I watched Spring Breakers with a group of friends. First thirty seconds one of them goes "oh man I'd love to do this." This friend has a history of drug and alcohol abuse, and I knew he'd hate the film because it portrays his personal fantasy in a bad light. Turns out him and his girlfriend were the only two in the room who hated the movie.
Not saying everyone else thought it was a masterpiece, most of them were on the fence, but those two were adamant that it was an awful movie. It wasn't fun to watch, and they hated the main characters. That, to me, speaks more than any glowing review could.
why is it that every few weeks or so we have a giant shitfest over spring breakers

Honestly, i thought Lone Ranger looked like shit until i actually watched it and enjoyed the hell out of it.
Batman & Robin
vomit / 10
New #1 worst movie I've ever seen

I haven't seen that since I was like 12. I don't really remember it being that bad, but that was years ago.

He also said Battle Royale is his favorite film ever.
People can have guilty pleasures.
Wolf of Wall Street
I have to say I haven't seen a movie this long for a while. Fortunately I didn't notice the lenght so much, mainly because the movie keeps you interested. Though there were couple of scenes that went on for a bit longer than they needed to. Still, I wasn't bored and I could see myself watching even some extra scenes if they would add to the movie. Finally, for a comedy I like it explores a lot of themes and goes dark at few moments.
Honestly, i thought Lone Ranger looked like shit until i actually watched it and enjoyed the hell out of it.
my reaction would be the polar opposite
looked good from the trailer and then i thought it was rather dull when i saw it

it could've been done soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better than it was though
Cowboy Bebop Movie- 8/10
Yeah, this is not exactly a new film. But if you have ever found yourself invested in the Cowboy Bebop franchise, then I would highly recommend watching the movie as well because it's basically the extended, penultimate episode that provides context to the events in the final episode.
I'm going to have to knock it a couple of points because of the plot hole where spike somehow comes to the conclusion that he needs to look for some "beans" with his only lead being the picture that fey drew.

But that movie is excellent, nothing guilty about it.

I could tell you the plot but I'm not going to because that's a stupid question that I won't dignify. Plot isn't the be all and end all of cinema. Far from it. Many of the best films ever made are light on plot. Look st Bergman, considered by many as one of the single best writers and directors of all time. His films are very light on plot, generally. It's about meaning and character, and themes, symbolism etc and to me that's what makes films great. Not plot.
Anyway I'm just out of a double bill of Lars von triers New film Nymphomaniac, complete with a q&a with 3 cast members, one of them stellar skarsgard. If did some one off screenings throughout the UK so obviously I jumped at the chance of seeing a Lars von trier film not only in the theatre but in the first and only showing it's doing and booked myself a brilliant seat the second they went on sale. He's one of the all time greatest to me and really inspires me as a filmmaker. His vision, stories and directorial style are on par with any master director.Really goddamn incredible. Absolutely fascinating from minute 1 to 250 or however long it was. Over 4 hours. Didn't feel it. I'm on my phone so I'll write more on it tomorrow but basically.. Goddamn. If a film tops it in 2014 it'll have been one he'll of a year. I rate both parts 9/10.
[editline]22nd February 2014[/editline]
And stellar skarsgard was incredibly good in the q&a. So much to say, so well spoken. He really understands Lars an. Was very insightful.
it could've been done soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better than it was though
Well I mean Gucci Mayne was the badguy so there's no real place to go but up in that category, but personally I really liked the euphoric, loud visual aesthetics, and the disjointed drugged out pacing it took. The scene where Alien is trying to get the nerve to [sp]raid the compoud[/sp] really sticks out to me, as well as the Brittney Spears montage. I tell people if I were to put it in a triple feature pack it'd be paired with Only God Forgives and The Councilor. All three very flawed, Love it or hate it ambitious movies that share the same corner of my DVD rack.
Would the film have been better with a different director? I don't really know. I think changing hands would lose a lot of what I loved about it. Whether it be the complete disregard for the target audience or the unique pacing, something would have been lost in translation. I feel like it stands well on its own, but I understand why people wouldn't really dig it all that much.
Gravity 7.5/10
this scene ruined it for me
But that movie is excellent, nothing guilty about it.
That's not what I was saying.
What I'm saying is that he likes movies everyone else likes, so just because he or anyone else likes one bad movie doesn't mean they have shit tastes.

QT also liked Kickass 2.
He made Pulp Fiction, my favorite film of all time, but man, he has some controversial opinions.
I caught the last half of Tarzan, starting right before Tarzan meets Jane for the first time.
[t]http://impawards.com/1999/posters/tarzan_ver2_xlg.jpg[/t]
It's really good. The characters are well-designed and enjoyable. The animation is especially great, seeing how Tarzan moves through the trees (IIRC they designed his muscles based on how a person walking like an ape would look), stylizing the animals differently, fantastic jungle scenes, and so forth. I actually enjoy the Phil Collins songs, and I'm not sure this would have worked as a traditional musical anyways.
Other thoughts:
- I forgot how incredibly British Jane was.
- I will never be able to unsee Tarzan as Weird Al.
- Clayton sort of looks like the Comedian.
- Does Tarzan shave or something? His dad had badass facial hair but he doesn't even have stubble.
- What sort of gun does Clayton have? It's some sort of double-barrelled shotgun, but they play loose with how the bullets and reloading work (probably because it's a kids movie). /k/ has ruined guns in movies for me.
- I have slowly been noticing that all the comic-relief characters I loved as a kid are annoying now that I'm older. In this movie, Rosie O'Donnell and Newman are more in the first half so I didn't see much of them, I guess they weren't too bad.
The Lego Movie
5/5
Go see this. Right. Now.

George Clooney and a mediocre script ruined it for me.
It was sort of distracting to have Clooney and Bullock as the leads. What I really enjoyed about The Thing and Alien was that - for the most part - the characters weren't recognizable celebrities but rather folks that looked like working-class men and women.
I liked Bullock in the movie, I just thought George Clooney was really annoying.
Why is everybody hatin' on my boy Clooney?
