Monuments Men Oh my, where to begin. First off, I don't really care much for George Clooney, and when he writes, directs, produces, and stars in a movie, I just don't have high hopes for it. Second, you can't give John Goodman a character that is named Walter, it's just heresy. Now, on to the big stuff. The movie just cannot stay in one place for more than a couple minutes. It's constantly all over the place. There's very little going on, and a lot of the run time is spent in shot-reverse shot dialog sequences that say everything that is happening without having to show it happening. Another huge problem is the tone. You never get a solid grasp on how you should feel. One scene can be a terribly unfunny attempt at comedy, then the next scene can be some "dramatic" scene that you don't care about because you never get attached to the characters. It's just scattered and doesn't know if it wants to be a comedy film, an action film, a drama film, or a kind of documentary type of film. This movie is 2 hours long, and you feel every second when you're watching it. It just goes on and on and on. Overall, I do not recommend it. Save your money and do something better with your 2 hours. PS: I only saw this because it was extra credit for school, otherwise I would have gone to see The Lego Movie.
Robocop Not that bad/10 I liked Oldman and Keaton, honestly. It really was a fun movie and the whole "oh boo it gets rid of the satire!" thing was adressed decently enough. It updates the topics and such in a way that it is more inline with america's fears or concerns today, rather than just completely remaking it and using old stuff, or making it ditch the satire element completely. It was very obvious though, less subtle than it could have been. I think the trailer mislead a lot of people on its purpose. Unnecessary, but not the worst thing since hitler like a lot of people thought it was going to be. Edit : The Pacing is kind of shit too.
Why is everybody hatin' on my boy Clooney?
I usually like Clooney, but he was terrible in Gravity. He just hammed that shit up.
Gravity 7.5/10 this scene ruined it for me the physics dont make sense
They could have fixed it so easily, like make the station spin or something so there's an actual force pulling them out
Gravity 7.5/10 this scene ruined it for me the physics dont make sense
Certain astrophysicists would disagree.
yeah didn't a bunch of astronauts say its pretty realistic
Just watched Riddick. Really enjoyed it despite the fact a lot of people don't seem to like it. It was a bit closer to Pitch Black than Chronicles. Vin Diesel kills people and monsters, fairly good plot and characters, special effects and set design are all pretty great. Overall though the story seems like it could've just been skipped in the overarching plot, but none the less, decent film 7/10 I will be more interested to see how the next one turns out though.
Mikey, if you think everything whedon touches is gold. Then you must think Alien Resurrection is a masterpiece
I'm a bit late with this, but didn't Whedon even said himself that he wanted to get fired from the project so he wrote a really bad script on purpose? But instead of getting fired the movie guys thought that the script could work?
not enough love for this movie from folks, hardly know anyone who watched that.
I've watched it last year before the Oscars and I honestly thought it was the weakest of all contenders for Best Picture. It wasn't bad per se, but rather mediocre. While I enjoyed the creation of the father, the little girl was absolutely annoying. And oh god that shakycam all the time.
the little girl was absolutely annoying.
:/ and people are way too stubborn about that camera technique.
It's really hard to have not-annoying little children act really well on camera, but when it happens it makes the film much better. And generally I try to be open minded about certain filming techniques. I guess in certain aspects shaky cam can be useful - when used wisely, with subtlety, to give this distinctive tint of realism (Children of Men with its famous long-take shot comes to mind), but not when it looks like cinematographer has Parkinson's disease during an earthquake throughout entire film. I want to see a film, not guess what's supposed to be on screen. Exact same thing is with lens flare. I really love that effect when used in moderation (e.g. "To The Wonder", most of Malick's films make really good use of that), not when entire film frame is blinded with it.
I'm a bit late with this, but didn't Whedon even said himself that he wanted to get fired from the project so he wrote a really bad script on purpose? But instead of getting fired the movie guys thought that the script could work?
He did say that, but I'm not sure if he's just covering his ass these days. When he was promoting Serenity, he was asked about the movie and he said that the script wasn't that bad, it was the film makers doing everything wrong. It's not as if the dice weren't loaded against him in the first place either. When he was tasked with coming up with the script, he had no logical way of bringing back Ripley, so Walter Hill and David Giler, who owned the franchise but we're cut off the project, suggested cloning Ripley because they thought it would end the franchise. Joss, who knew it was a shit idea pretty much said "fuck it" and wrote the script.
ok so yea i said i'd write more, here it is- Nymphomaniac Parts I & II, plus Q&A with cast- 8.5/10 Alright alright alrighttttt I don't even know where to start. This is the longest film I've ever seen, clocking in at 241 minutes, but it feels shorter than a lot of 2+ hour films I've seen. And not even bad 2+ hour films. Nymphomaniac flows so perfectly, so well structured even if this is a slightly cut down version (not the directors 5 1/2h cut which I hope will make its way to home video). The film is split into 8 chapters. We begin before the chapters do, in a snowy alley way. The sound design is eerie and creepy. The cinematography is like a combination of Tarkovsky and Gaspar Noe. We hear the creaking of the vents, the rain and the snow, and a low metallic hum setting a very unsettling tone. We crawl into a vent, instantly cut to a wide shot where we are introduced to Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), lying beaten and broken. The second the cut happens a big Rammstein riff drowns out all sound and a really fucking good long shot happens. Like I just wanna take a second to say how fucking incredible the cinematography is in this movie, some parts especially. Some really creative use of the camera and really beautiful and strange shots. Seligman (Skarsgard) finds her. She refuses help from an ambulance or the police, so he takes her home and she tells him her story. The film is split over two parts and 8 chapters, as mentioned. Part I being 5 chapters, Part 2 being 3, mirroring that time Shia Lebeouf took her virginity via 5 vaginal thrusts and 3 anal ones, then just leaving her to hobble off and out the stairs in pain and disappointment. I viewed this film as a culmination of all of Lars' previous work. It has a technical prowess most definitely, from his Europa trilogy, where he meticulously planned out every frame, every shot, every action from an actor. Then he abandoned it, working without his tools, and started the Dogme95 movement, making films like Breaking The Waves, The Idiots and Dancer In The Dark- a home video feel, focusing on people, avoiding cliche and staying away from being genre films. Then he stripped himself down even further with Dogville and Manderlay. His films were just people. And of course in Antichrist and Melancholia his visuals were far more stunning (in the Q&A Stellan said that Lars was getting annoyed because his artistic eye was drawing him to the beautiful visuals but he wanted to make it ugly and kept shouting that things were too pretty etc :v:) I mean fuck I don't even know really what to talk about in this movie. It's really really good though. That's for sure. It's two parts as I said, 5 and 3 chapters each (although part two is actually longer- the chapters don't include the current day dialogue between Joe and Seligman in the room) It's not wholey realistic, but when is von Trier? His stuff makes sense in its own bubble. His films are about his views and his struggles, not real people. It's a bit self aware in that aspect though. I don't want to ruin anything, but yeah, watch this. Standout performances go to Stacy Martin as young Joe, Shia Lebeouf as Jerome (even if his English accent isn't very good, his mannerisms and delivery are fantastic. He stole a few scenes. He was one of the characters that appeared the most as he comes in and out of Joe's life, I was happy he wasn't just in it for one scene or something. As I suspected he's got some real acting chops and hopefully he continues doing great work) and Uma Therman's one scene appearance as a wife whose husband Joe has been sleeping with. Oh yeah, also. This film is really, really funny. Not by accident or anything. It's absurdly hilarious at times, it's surreal and weird, there's proper comedy going on in this movie amongst the darkness. Lars von Trier has always had a dark sense of humour that's been apparent in his films but it takes the most form here. Also, his Tarkovsky influence is the strongest it's been too. He dedicated the film to him, as rival Nicolas Winding Refn did last year with Only God Forgives. (little fact- Refn's father, Anders Refn, has worked many times with von Trier as either his Assistant director or editor. In Antichrist's case, he was both) There is one truly transcendant scene (that harks back to another scene, a childhood memory of Joe's, where her father tells her winter trees are when they show their crooked and twisted souls hidden beneath the beauty. although not so cynical as I phrased it at all, there's beauty all the way through. It makes sense given joe's character too) That is as poignant and powerful as Ingmar Bergman at the top of his game. It really sent shivers down my spine. The film continued on but I honestly wasn't really paying attention for good two or three minutes. I was still taking in this image that I was shown, something that came out of nowhere that absolutely blew my mind. I consider that single shot one of the highlights of von Trier's career and thought it instantly.
, the little girl was absolutely annoying.
No shutup Hushpuppy's the Clementine of film.
just watched the first 20 minutes of The Secret it's just basically this: [editline]23rd February 2014[/editline] this film made $60 million+ at the theatres....
came back from 5 movies yo Her - 9.9/10 Aint them bodies saint - 7.2/10 August: Osage county - 7.4/10 Grand Budapest Hotel - 8/10 Keepers of the lost cause - 7.5/10 so yea had a pretty good day
He did say that, but I'm not sure if he's just covering his ass these days. Nobody with any integrity, regardless of the situation, would want to write a bad alien movie. You would feel honoured, you would try to make your mark in history, and outdo the previous disappointment. There's no way you'd try and make an Alien movie bad on purpose. Joss so clearly tried to write a good film.
Gravity 7.5/10 this scene ruined it for me the physics dont make sense
you're forgetting physics don't apply up there, that's why the ship starts going with them also, shit travels at disgustingly fast speeds up there, so it's a good bet george had some decent speed on him from getting hit.
Three Kings is the only David O Russell movie I've seen (so far) and I really enjoyed it. I've been torn on going to see American Hustle - initially I was really interested and there were some good reviews at first but it seems that a lot of people really didn't enjoy it.
Most people thought it was boring, but I beg to differ. Then again, Stalker's my most favorite film ever.
Most people thought it was boring, but I beg to differ. I don't actually hate o Russells stuff but hes average Three kings is his best film imo, it's really good

Grown Ups 2 All that happens in this movie is Adam Sandler has a party. It wasn't Holocaust levels of terrible like I was expecting, but it was the equivalent of staring at the ceiling.
