Ghostbusters - 10/10 Naturally after hearing of Harold Ramis' passing yesterday, I knew it wouldn't be long before I decided to sit down and watch this, seeing as how I spent a good portion of yesterday playing the video game (which is fucking fantastic and they put it back on Steam finally, for those who are wondering and haven't purchased it because of said reasons). Anyways, I first saw this movie at about the age of four. Of course, being four years old I had no fuckin' clue of what was going on for the most part except the Ghostbusters catching ghosts and the catchy theme song, but nonetheless it stayed embroiled into my brain as something not just good, but exceptionally fantastic (this effect also applies to The Wizard of Oz and Star Wars Episode IV). One thing I did notice on this most recent viewing is that Ramis seems to take what would have probably been an ordinarily dull and nerdy character (possibly sideshifted to Rick Moranis' Louis Tully) and gives himself a smart, witty and charismatic backing. The comedy is subtle, but effective. There is really not one thing I would have changed in this film. Of course, this being an older movie, you always find those one-liners that stick around, and Ghostbusters is no exemption. Bah, I don't feel like going into further detail, still a great movie and will always be one of my absolute favorites.
There really is a lot of great subtle stuff in the movie. Ray getting noticeably more worn-out over time, and Janine's growing relationship with Egon are two things that come to mind. I also think that the Ghostbusters being super-broke at first but quickly becoming super-popular is handled well. I also like how it has a good sense of scale. Sure it's a comedy (Slimer and Stay-Puft sure look humorous) but the plot is serious and the stakes are high. It knows when to dial back the laughs and build tension.
This film is considered legendary. I watched the restored versions and I was entranced by it, It may be a silent film but the sets, theme, effects, and the 1920's idea of the future fixated me. Some people actually laugh at the effects and story today, so it may not be for everyone but I love it! 10/10 It's on netflix and It's definitely worth a view.
Have any of y'all seen the Giorgio Moroder edit of Metropolis? It sounds like an interesting concept.

Considering the full version wasn't even released to the general public by that time either.
Iirc metropolis' original score is considered lost though and there are lots of soundtracks composed for it. His interpretation is valid. The editing however is a bit iffy yea, I've seen neither version though. Passion of Joan of Arc has a lot of different scores as well for the same reason.
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. I loved almost everything in the film, but I thought the Civil War battle at the end (where Tuco and Blondie just signed up for the Union) felt like they needed a big action scene for some reason. Also, Angel Eyes just happened to disappear until the graveyard. That sort of bothers me in a story aspect. 9.9/10
I dunno, I felt that the civil war scene put the characters into some kind of context. It showed that even ruthless killers such as Blondie and Tuco thought the war was completely senseless and immoral.

Friend of mine recommended movies by Jacques Audiard and I have yet to see a bad one from him, they are all 8/10 or more. Todays schedule: A Prophet
Frozen I absolutely loved it. From the technical side it was a masterpiece, Disney with each film is raising the bar so high, that I doubt any studio will ever surpass them. The characters were adorable, and the singing was wonderful. The only thing that bothered me was how story was handled, specially the beginning. It was bad for Disney's animation standards. I mean, it sounds like a great idea to separate two sisters, lock one up and isolate her from everyone, and shhh, let's not say anything to the other one. Make her guess. Yeah, I see absolutely no way it could backfire. And prince Hans? Well [sp]from the first moment he appeared on screen it was kind of obvious that he's the villain. I know that there always have to be one, but I don't want to watch Disney's animation for politics, treasons, plots and cynical schemes (although now when I think about I would absolutely watch Disney version of House of Cards).[/sp]

The Wind Rises - 9.7/10 Couldn't give it a 10/10 because I am trying to compensate for my director-crush on Miyazaki, but I do think it deserves the 10. I would highly recommend going to go see it. It was a fantastic send off for Miyazaki as his last film.
Senna (2010) - 10/10 One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Never was too interested in F1 racing or even cars in general, but this had really opened my eyes to the way things were a few decades ago and why it was such a popular sport. I've heard of Senna before and after seeing this documentary the fatal crash is twice as depressing. Truly a shame to lose such a great, humble and passionate person at such a young age and with so much inspiration to people all over the world, especially Brazilians. Obviously highly recommended to watch as it is extremely interesting even to those who aren't into F1 or racing in general.
I enjoyed Senna, but I wouldn't give it a 10 because in some areas it was far from perfect. It feels like they often portrayed Prost as this pantomime villain when their relationship was more complex than that, it's especially annoying when they praise Senna as this Machiavellian genius for ramming Prost and when Prost turns the tables he's instantly vilified. The extended cut solves a few of these problems but for some reason it was only released in the UK.

Well A Prophet 9/10 It's a movie about a 19 year old wit arab ancestors who goes into prioson for the first time and has to decide between other Arabs or the Corsicans who use him to serve them as he is "the new guy". In a slippery slope that he starts to embrace he goes up in the ranks of the criminals.. It's portrayed pretty damn realistic especially in what's happening with and around him in prison and I really really liked that you could get what's going on inside him without him or someone directly telling it, A++ acting.
12 Years a Slave - 9/10
12 Years a Slave - 9/10
I had watery eyes at the end.
Frozen Really good, loved it
Man of Steel 4/10 Disappointing
That's a good way to describe it (I like another review who called it "wildly uneven"). I feel like there are some good moments and lines, but so much else about it falls far short.

Brazil- 10/10 An underrated classic and probably my favorite steampunk/cyberpunk film (it has a bit of both). Terry Gilliam's dark vision of an Orwellian future deals with serious themes in a humorous and exaggerated way. And the protagonist's quest for escapism has a suitably cynical ending. Watch this movie if you haven't already.
