Why can't we talk about tv shows? I want to talk about how bad Helix is.
because we have a special-needs little brother thread for tv shows here: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1300431&page=6 But really though, its dead as shit, theres no discussion at all and its way easier to talk about it here
can we talk about shitty cable tv shows? i've been seeing so many ads for nbc and abc shows every damn second, they are really pulling this stuff out of their ass. ressurection: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-CxKM59S78 some fucking show about resurrecting dead people and making families happy blah blah blah. so fucking mind-numbing.
go ahead and start up a "shitty cable general thread" also abc fucked themselves when they cancelled last resort, that was the only competent show they had. instead they stick with once upon a time and other nonsense.
abc fucked themselves a lonnngggg time ago
A movie I suggest see is Logan's Run. It's like In Time except it isn't shit and it's actually enjoyable
Im fuckin puking [editline]17th March 2014[/editline] Didn't know I was browsing /r/movies
First, notice that I put "films" in quotation marks. I had to make some sort of distinction, as yes there are movies made with mindless entertainment in mind while some others are made to make you think more than anything else. However, i use flick, movie, film etc... interchangeably as they all mean the same damn thing. Secondly, read on to my second comment. "That is completely true. I was making a generalization more than anything. In the end they're all movies, but they each serve a different purpose is what my point is." Those purposes aren't mutually exclusive, but to act as if all movies are made to be thought provoking pieces is insane. There are movies that are made solely to entertain. There is nothing wrong with that. It's ok to like movies like that, and to give them ratings according to your reaction. People were getting bashed for enjoying and rating slightly above average a fun action flick. Which is stupid, it's a fucking movie.
Or you can be a huge tosser like Dane Cook and call them cinematic adventures
Moonrise Kingdom Saw a lot of talk about this movie in this thread, so I decided to give it a watch. What a nice, charming movie. I normally really dislike child actors and romance stories, but somehow this one manages to pull them both off. The performances by everybody are all amazing. I didn't even really know that Bruce Willis was in it until a ways into the movie when I thought Captain Sharp kinda looked like Bruce Willis. Bill Murray is also great. I thought the 2 main kids did really great. The plot was nice and easy to follow. The cinematography was beautiful, the colors were really vibrant and the shots were amazing. Editing was also rather nice. The music worked really well with the visuals. Overall, give it a watch if you want a nice, charming, unexpectedly good movie. I wish any of the theaters around me had Grand Budapest Hotel, but not a single one anywhere has it.
am i the only one who felt like they've seen the movie before as they were watching it? really nothing special about this movie. fuck it, maybe i don't like movies based on on "true stories" or inspired. hollywood just romanticizes the fuck out of them.
it's more about the writing and acting and the funny situations that make the movie great. the story is kinda formulaic.
you do realise there isn't lick of CGI in the entire movie
wrecked [editline]18th March 2014[/editline]
That doesn't tackly my points though. Edited something up there.
yes it does. because you don't know what kind of movie it is. because you havent seen it !!!!
Just saw Non-Stop 3/10 I need to stop letting my fucking friends pick movies to go see, this is bullshit
Open Grave I knew nothing about this film going in. The only reason I picked it to watch was because I wondered what was Sharlto Copley up to when he isn't making blockbusters. It was okay... definitely could use better pacing. It starts out alright and the ending is interesting but everything in between is pretty lackluster.
HOLY MOVIE NEWS BATMAN!
Disney Pixar just announced that THE INCREDIBLES 2 is coming!
AND
We're excited to announce that Episode VII filming will begin this May at London's historic Pinewood Studios. Set 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, the highly-anticipated next installment will feature a mix of new and familiar faces. Read more at http://strw.rs/1eOXCAU
I guess I had a movie day today. I watched the "new" Oldboy (2013). Surprisingly, Sharlto Copley stars in it, too, but I remember seeing a trailer for this film and looking worth checking out. Now I haven't watched the original which I think is a plus because I don't have any kind of bias going in. Still, I quickly looked up the iconic fight scene after finishing and the original does it better. Better camera angle and most importantly [sp]the main character actually has trouble beating all his opponents. In the 2013 version he's unstoppable.[/sp] I only compared this scene because you can judge the technical stuff without knowing each movie's plot. Rest of the story seems pretty solid although it has that Hollywood vibe to it. CGI blood doesn't help. Primarily, the main villain who is played by Copley is actually very Hollywood-ish. He's simply too weird than he needs to be. There are many reasons to hate him but it felt like they wanted you to look at him and instantly say: "He's messed up." That to me felt a bit cheap and unoriginal. Finally, the ending's choice seemed strange to me END SPOILER[sp]Suicide would make more sense then prison alone for the rest of your life. Maybe he likes TV, I don't know.[/sp]END SPOILER. [del]3/5[/del] 2/5

Its also pretty insane, its probably the only film where you'll see a man eat a LIVE squid on camera. What a commitment to the role. The Fight Scenes are also Amazing. Recommend you see this. Absolutely hated the Remake, as it is nothing compared to the Original.
yea man what a fuckin crazy dude eating a legitimate asian food source as it is meant to be eaten fuckin MENTAL [editline]18th March 2014[/editline] if u wanna watch a REALLY good film from Park Chan Wook watch Sympathy for Mr Vengeance it is twice as good as Oldboy
Yeah, that's what I keep reading. I guess I'll check it out later. The more I think about it the more I hate the main villain. He was just so over the top and his backstory was pretty rubbish, too.
Dear Zachary-9/10 Really depressing but well made and unique in a way of taking a somewhat different kind of style unlike other documentary film Skyfall-6.5/10 While it had some nice action scenes and alright acting, the story is what frustrated me throughout this movie since it didnt really feel like a 007 story but more of a generic one that made me personally feel like Ive heard this story already
in the original I think the villain is not that fleshed out either, everyone goes on about the plot being amazing but really it is not that solid. its just got a good twist and powerful moments. In terms of story progression its quite forced and over the top. [editline]18th March 2014[/editline] tbh Oldboy is almost silly but Park Chan Wook is such a good director he makes you not realise it
The first two of the Vengeance trilogy are definitely worth watching. mikey says sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is 'twice as good as Oldboy' but eh, they're both different and great for me. And yeah, eating live squid is really common in Korea.
imo Mr Vengeance has a far better story that makes more sense, 10x more striking imagery and a better lead actor with a more interesting vice than just being an asshole
They both highly differ both in style and tone. The only thing they have in common is the director and the theme of vengeance. It's definitely the more grounded, gritty and depressing of the two. However I still think any preference of the two will fall rather largely on personal taste than actual drastic differences in quality. [editline]18th March 2014[/editline] Also just my personal opinion
The Holy Mountain: 10/10 I don't know what compelled me to watch this film but it's been a long time since I've felt so satisfied after watching a film.
The Holy Mountain: 10/10 I don't know what compelled me to watch this film but it's been a long time since I've felt so satisfied after watching a film.
Jodorowsky is one of my favourites. I'd recommend his other films too.
Saving Mr. Banks - 8/10 I really enjoyed this movie. High production value, good actors and a good script. Really liked Tom Hank's portrayal of Walt Disney. It's overall a pretty good movie and would suggest people to give it a watch.
Great Gatsby was a okay movie, but the modern music mixed with 20s music ruined some of the feel the movie gave me, also the dialogue felt rushed alot. The only modern song that was okay to leave in was Young and Beautiful

Wind Rises 7/10 I'm a bit of a Studio Ghibli fan, I love his works, I've seen Totoro, Spirited Away, Ponyo, Grave of the Fireflies, Arietty and such, so then I decided to go and see his final work. It was alright, as usual his works tend to make some heartstrings for you and suddenly wrenches it from your chest, but it was pretty slow-paced. Some parts drag and all I found myself doing was admiring the animation and not get immersed into the story. I mean, I admired the historical aspect and the tribute to the man, but it just wasn't that, well. Exciting. There were some anti-climactic moments and it just didn't really go as well as I had thought in my mind, but overall, the story was good, the animation is superb as always and the soundtrack was pretty good too. The execution could have been better.
You've mention the first 2, but how is the third one?
Hm, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance isn't bad but to me, it felt more like a weird blend between Mr Vengeance and Old Boy. I just don't remember it being as powerful or distinct as either of those two movies. It's not bad, it's a quality film, and it's worth a watch if you're curious but imo, inferior to both Oldboy and Sympathy for Mr Vengeance.
