The Desolation of Smaug
The pacing is much better than the first, less boring and a little more movement. Overall it still feels like the story is drawn out too much, 3 movies is a real stretch you can notice just by watching. But still fun and I'm glad in some ways that the movies take a slightly different direction.
7/10
“This casting choice is particularly shameful for a children’s movie,” the petition reads. “Telling children their role models must all be white is unacceptable.”
Holy shit, it baffles me how people can be that stupid with so blatant double standards. But I guess nothing will top people boycotting Dallas Buyers Club for having a white straight male playing the role of transwoman.
Katniss from the Hunger Games is meant to be black/at least dark skinned iirc but no one talks about that lol. Whitewashing is kind of an issue though imo, like there are lots of great black, asian etc actors out there too. There are people within the race of the character who could do the role.
btw can u explain the double standards comment cos it sounds like theres more to your perspective
i'd rather just watch Battle Royale

it's a pretty valid complaint. studies have shown that seeing people who look like yourself helps make you feel better about yourself.

at least Cars 3 is changing things up a bit...

That'd be hilarious if it was real
Ted - 5.5/10
half if it was alright with some golden parts and the other half was pretty boring (standard Family Guy story/humor (lmfao a jew kid!!) I kinda thought it would be better overall considering ebert apparently gave it 3.5/4 (wtf?)
marky mark was also funnier than the bear most of the time.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams
What a nice, thought-provoking documentary. Directed, written, and narrated by Werner Herzog, it focuses on a cave in France discovered in the 1990s that contains the oldest known paintings in the world. The paintings themselves are wonderful, and the music that accompanies the movie is very fitting. The documentary gives some thoughts and insights as to what these ancient people could have used the paintings for and how these people might have lived. Some of the people that were interviewed were rather quirky, and there were a few shots that went on for a long time with nothing but the paintings, but everything works. I wanted to be a spelunker and archaeologist by the end of it. Overall, it's a really nice documentary that people who are interested in prehistory should watch. I think it would have been an amazing experience to watch this in 3D in the theater when it came out.

Ted did the same thing Family Guy does. They'll have 2 minutes of some lame plot, and then the disgusting oafish retard (Peter/Ted) will do a one-liner that no other character acknowledges, so it wouldn't even matter if they were there or not.
Sin City
4/5
I cannot believe I haven't seen this until now. That kicked ass.

Hell, I'd pay to see that.
In the horrible sequel that everybody hates [sp]Hannibal is obviously infatuated with Clarice and kisses her. Apparently in the original novel, she falls for him too.[/sp] For this reason, many people think Thomas Harris is more of a hack who got lucky in writing The Silence of the Lambs.
That said, I would say Hannibal has legitimate emotions for Clarice in TSotL given the scene where [sp]he strokes Clarice's finger through the bars. Subtle affection like that works much better than a nonsense kiss.[/sp]
How To Train Your Dragon 7/10
It was pretty good. Doesn't hold a candle to most of Pixars work, but definitely Dreamworks best.
Terminator 2, 10/10
After many conversations with my friends about what makes an action movie good, I decided to throw on the best action movie ever made. Didn't disappoint.
Doesn't hold a candle to most of Pixars work
I disagree, I think it's way better than Pixar's recent stuff.
I disagree, I think it's way better than Pixar's recent stuff.
Having seen Brave the other day, I agree. I'd give it maybe a 6 or 7 out of 10. Not a bad movie, but certainly no Disney or Pixar classic.
Haha, that's why I said MOST of Pixars work.
I'd watch HTTYD over Cars any day of the week, but works like Wall-E, Up, and Finding Nemo are simply in different leagues, in my opinion.
Nymphomaniac
Good day ladies and gentlemen. I have been wanting to see this for ages and it finally came out. Von Trier always brings something challenging to the table and this was no exception.
The first part was kind of light by his standards and covered much of the sex is power stuff and the balance of power between the sexes. What got me about Joe's character was the total lack of care about those around her and the utter selfishness of her actions. I wonder if Von Trier has such a low opinion of humanity because this film seems to celebrate the worst of it.
The second half takes a rather darker turn, especially with the entrance of Jamie Bells character. Nymphomaniac means an addiction to sex annd Joe seems to be willing to sacrifice everything to get her fix. The dialog between her and the rescuer becomes ever more interesting as the 2 opposites reveal much about their lives using the similarities between fly fishing and the methods of a sexual predator. The ending I sdidn't see coming and that was just ......ughh.
Amazing pair of films with some really clever script.

Blue is the warmest colour
Another film with graphic sexual scenes hits extremely high. This would still have worked without those bedroom scenes but the uncompromising way its shot reminded me much of Bertolucci's school of film making because he firmly believes in making something that doesn't look simulated. The direct much have creatively drained these 2 actresses and thats probably why they said they would never work with him again.
Much has been said about the sex scenes because the girls said they were not real yet the film suggests different. Let me tell you now, I know exactly where a girls bits are and for a fact those 2 were having sex the best way 2 girls can, this was not really a simulation. The thing is it works because the emotions they express seem just as real as the passion betwen them physically, it's all so real.
The innocence, the discovery, the behaviour and the places these characters go make this so watchable that I just need to see this again. It's odd that such a movie has replay value to this degree.
This film is a modern masterpiece.

I saw Nymphomaniac in a double bill with Q&A afterwards, Stellan Skarsgaard said Lars von Trier made it end the way it did literally to say "fuck you". No real reason other than to piss you off. Which is kinda funny. It does make sense but its kinda far fetched (as is the rest of it though but imo it's deliberate and its silliness is even questioned a few times by Skarsgaard's character)
Also I never thought von Trier hates people. There is no way a person who has nothing but disdain for humanity could make a film like Breaking The Waves. Breaking The Waves shows the terrible side of human nature, yes, but Bess is one of the most beautiful people ever in film. She's a shining light in a terrible world. For Lars von Trier to have created her he must have a positivity, an almost naive optimism and hope for human existence. I think von Trier knows human nature and exploits the darkness of it, often for controversy tbh but I like it so I don't mind, but he celebrates it as well, mostly with his Golden heart trilogy. And Dogville too.
Although I maybe twisted your words there, he probably does have a cynical view of the world, however I think he has fantastical ideals of what people could be if they were good. eg his golden heart trilogy. But how good people never survive in the world we live in.

Blue is the Warmest Colour was honestly amazing, my favourite film of last year and one of the best of the 21st century. It just arrived in the mail the other day as I preordered it on blu-ray after seeing it twice in the cinema. Really incredible film.
47 Ronin
a load of arse. 3/10
can't wait to see nymphomaniac, missed it in theatres :(
Silver Linings Playbook
Holy shit I cannot contain my feels right now, its rare that a movie touches me so much but damn. Perfect happy ending too :)
Finally got around to seeing Frozen. I was a bit skeptical given the amount of praise surrounding it, but I'm impressed. Not quite a 10/10 as the pacing had a couple bumps and the villains were far more one-dimensional than they should have been, but a damn fine film.
holy shit I forgot that vikings season 2 started

Argh yes I really wanted to catch that q&a but had to settle for the standard showing due to work commitments.
What did you think of Shia le poof? Some were claiming this to be his departure from boy into a real acting man but I wasn't sold. I couldn't help but think he was cast because he should be the last person you'd expect to see in a Von Trier film. He was ok but nothing fantastic. The rest of the cast were fantastic, especially Jamie Bell for what littlle he did.
I'm aware of the trilogy themes he's running with and I guess once again for the last of the 3, Nymphomaniac fits into what they are about but some of the characters in his last 3 seem to have nothing moral about them whatsoever yet still retain a complexity you'd want to chew over after its finished. Von Trier is fantastic.

I'm sure theres a thread on here about the Marvel films? Ask nicely and I might dump you a link Charles.
I don't deny that lars von trier is immature, in fact I definitely think it's the case but his artistic ability is top level and he makes it work via clever dark humour and creating worlds that slightly bend reality. The ending is just provocation but it works.
Also worth noting that'd what's skarsgard said and he's a big joker so he was probably exaggerating the 'just to annoy you' factor. I imagine it's more of a mean prank type ending.
[editline]21st March 2014[/editline]
I view von trier films as an inside joke. Either you get it and you're in on the joke and you love it, and you actually find absurd humour which is in literally every one of his films, even the darkest and most depressing (I tie this with his naive hope of humanity being potentially good- he sees good in the worst of situations) or you dont and it'll probably just piss you off. And when you get annoyed I think von trier laughs. So the absurd humor, bleakness and his forceful hand bringing unrealistic events yo come about are all part of his big game of cinema
it didn't annoy me. it just made think lars has a tenuous grip on reality, because neither characters actions made any sense and went completely against their established personalities and ignored the entire events of the film. it just made me feel like he had no idea what he was doing. that any coherence before this point was a complete fluke.
[editline]22nd March 2014[/editline]
like, he wanted people to go 'what the fuck!!! cmon!!!! damnit!!' but I was just like 'uuuuuhhhh. that's dumb. this movie is dumb.'
a good example of an ending getting the reaction I think lars wanted, was inception. but instead of doing it a clever way, he just did the most retarded bullshit nonsensical thing.
Snowpiercer is out fuck yeah
ANd it's really really fucking awesome.
