Tom Bombadil is such a ridicolous character I'm glad they left him out of the movies.
Yea Tom Bombadil is super important lore wise but hes basically something that would not work in the film without seeming really silly so I think its best they left him out.
The Fly - 8/10
My first Cronenberg film after somebody basically forced me to watch it. Really good.
Donnie Darko.
Really love this movie. Weird, but very enjoyable. Watched it so many times.
Frank/10.
"obnoxious woodman"
Tom Bombadil is the embodiment of all nature in Middle Earth, he ain't no woodman, son.
Or possibly an avatar of Eru or something, I don't even know.

if you want more Cronenberg, watch videodrome/scanners (although all his old stuff is basically gold in my eyes) then watch eastern promises. Don't watch Cosmopolis, I argued with myself for so long about whether or not it was good cos I love the book but it just isn't IMO

8/10. Good as fuck.
Very funny, plot starts off a bit predictable but it dives into some clever ass writing.
I recommend the fuck out of this movie. The trailer DOES NOT do it justice at all.
Godzilla vs. Biollante - 7/10
A great movie I enjoyed. Have not seen it since it was on HBO a long while back, I love the score too (by Dragon Quest games's composer)
Maybe you should just write all those reasons in one post again. I'm sure most people here won't mind it.
Besides, it'd be good to reference to for inevitable future lotr/peter jackson arguments.
I'll try to keep it short.
- Flat and boring soap opera cinematography. Most of the shots are flat, back and forth chest up shots. Yes, there are some panning scenery shots. But those are just sprinkled over the rest of the boring shots.
- In addition to that, it has a soft, glowy feel to it, that feels very cheap, also similar to a soap opera.
- Lifeless, wooden, over choreographed action sequences. Think of the Star Wars prequels, as far as emotionless fights go. Yeah, there's 'epic' music over the top. But there's nothing at all interesting about the fights. They feel robotic.
- Awful performances from most of the cast. Everyone has the hammiest, b-grade acting in this movie. Even people who are otherwise good in other roles. Once they put on their fantasy hats, all subtely and acting talent just went right out the window. It is very hard to watch. And as a result, I could not bring myself to care much about any of the characters.
- A boring, generic fantasy world. Orcs and elves and wizards. Not interesting. I realise that the books were the thing to popularize this fantasy setting, but that doesn't make it any less cliched and dull to watch. The solution to that, is to not make the books into movies.
- A thoroughly average plot. A guy spends 3 movies walking to a volcano. I know simple plots can be great, but this one isn't. Every movie feels over-long and filled to the brim with padding, just so it takes Frodo longer to get to his destination. I naturally attribute this to the source material. Which leads me to think that, while likely a pioneer with great amounts of dedication, JRR Tolkien wasn't very good at writing plots.
- Peter Jackson's general lack of directing flare or talent. The whole thing feels so middle of the road. Nothing interesting or unique about the way in which the movie is made or shot. And for most of the films, the colours feel very dull.
And I feel like all of this, is just overlooked or ignored, because so many people get a raging fantasy boner over it. Someone said that fanboyism ruins films. I absolutely agree. You can tell Peter Jackson thought these books were the bees knees, and his blind love for them blinded him in his directorial chair. He just didn't do anything right.
Noah, 8/10
A few minor changes here and there could have bumped it up, but overall a VERY good movie.

-terrible opinions-
Maybe if you actually read books you'd realize how incredibly wrong you are about Tolkien.
Literally every point he made is legit and I like the movies lol don't be a dumb fanboy. Lotr is the worst for 100% blind praise by its fanbase refusing to accept any of the blatant flaws.

I'm not being a fanboy. I'm not even a fan of the series. Though I read the books and watched the movies, I think it's silly for Rusty for suggest that Tolkien cannot write plots.
Literally every point he made is legit
not true tho
"im bored of elves and ogres" isnt a valid point, its completely subjective
also i'd argue that the plot wasn't really bad at all. just because their final goal was really simple (and stayed the same from the start), it doesn't mean the other aspects of it were bland and boring
so question
if tolkien writes sub-par plots
why does every fantasy story/game/etc literally stem from those same plots?
shit wouldn't be copied if it wasn't good.
Is it okay if i squeeze in a movie-rating amidst all this arguing with Rusty?
The triplets of Belleville 8/10
I'm in love with the artstyle of this movie. I was constantly pausing it just to admire the backgrounds. all the warm colours and details, especially the cityscapes.
paranormal shitivity: fucked ones
4/10
I don't know why I even bothered watching it to the end
its boring, the shock scares are predictable as fuck (oh let me just put my camera here for a second, CLEARLY SOMETHING IS GOING TO POP AT YOU)
Also for fuck sake;

Filth - 8/10
I'm so glad that i didn't watch it with any expectations, except for this:
Because this just blew me away. Amazing, gritty story and incredible acting by the whole cast (allthough McAvoy stands out considerably).
McAvoy is awesome if I'd call me a fan for anything it would be him
the Place Beyond the Pines
jesus, what a tragedy. It's not specifically sad in many ways, but the atmosphere is bluughh and depressing and the characters have pretty much only bad things happen to them
also loooonnnnng. and the editing does not help make it go any quicker. halfway through the 2 hr 20 mins is a 15-year timeskip, so after digesting some decent but mostly stonefaced acting by Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling, you get to watch their teenage kids bash heads. both of the young actors are mostly annoying and difficult to sympathize with, and the dysfunction and drama that comes from their interactions isn't terribly engaging
it's a decent story, but it could have used a lot more style, since it plays out a lot like a documentary re-enactment. 6/10
D'jango Unchained.
9/10
Was good when you are bored and want to watch a movie that you can get right into. Although I did not like the electronic/dubsteppy music in the middle of the fight scenes. Would reccomend.

The plot was basically just ok. I wouldn't say it's bad either. (however the world and lore is great) But being bored of the world is a perfectly legit reason, yeah he created it but for one thing he didnt make the peter jackson films which rode on it lol. And SO many people have ripped off Tolkien, to the point where his ideas, while original at the time, no longer feel like they are. We know the story. His characters and races are all archetypes found in every mediocre fantasy novel, film or game. I don't fault Tolkien for this but the legions of fans who just took his ideas and run them into the ground. But because of that we've all had a lot of exposure to these ideas so LOTR doesn't really stand up in terms of feeling original.
And yeah Rusty said that he was bored by the concept? Is that not ok? Its subjective as you said. Its his opinion that its boring. I don't see how that makes it any less of a valid point when film is such a subjective medium. And you dont need purely objective reasons to dislike something. Things such as being bored by the concept because it is done to death are 100% legitimate. I think mafia and gangster films are boring. The Godfather doesnt interest me. Its boring and lame. Thats subjective. Does that mean im wrong? (hint- if you say yes, you are a hypocrite) Is it not a good reason? Idk. Maybe u dont like sci-fi. Thats your opinion. good for u. So what. im not gonna say you are literally incorrect in an objective way. Your argument is stupid.
[editline]29th March 2014[/editline]
And he is very right in terms of Peter Jackson. hes basically an ok director. He directs like hes directing a soap. Flat as hell, cheesy lighting, boring cinematography. Very generic shot-reverse-shot stuff. Theres like nothing adventurous in the camerawork whatsoever. The lighting looks cheap and soft. The action is shot in an average, generic way.
holy christ on a cheese cracker can we stop this LOTR shitfest
people have opinions, and some certain people have wrong opinions, lets move on

well, do you wanna back up your hostility for 2 more points out of 10 with an argument instead of a dumb rating?
That is literally impossible?
what? how, lol

im not arguing whether or not its a good reason to like something or not, idk where you got that?? im saying an opinion shouldn't be used to label something as a "blatant flaw"
Just watched The Purge
strange
I felt like I wanted to enjoy it a bit since it was sort of a neat and unique idea but the characters and the way the story played out just made absolutely no sense as far as motivations and etc. went. It's also never really explained why the purge actually makes society some utopia. Dumb as heck as to how it implied everyone is a closet serial killer underneath or something too. It's just a hair above unwatchable but it was entertaining enough to kill an hour and a half with.
I don't know how to rate it aside from saying it is far below average but not a failure in every regard.

I used to make the joke that the Paranormal Activity movies were made on a budget of less than $10 with most of it going towards fishing line, but I'm starting to think it's not so funny.
