I'm going to watch Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro soon and I'm wondering how the english dubs are. Usually I prefer subtitles but I feel that I'm gonna want to focus on the animation. So dub or subtitles?

So dub or subtitles?
Well I always watch subs first because it allows me to absorb how it was originally intended. Then, later, I go back and test out different dubs. I don't really like the English dubs but that's my opinion. For some reason, the Korean dubs work really well but that's also my opinion. If you already watched those movies before, try out the dub. If you haven't, go sub. If you liked the movies enough, you can watch them again later with the dub. The animation would easily be noticeable with the subs because your eyes shouldn't be glued to the subs all the time. Besides, Miyazaki's movies allows character silence when great animation takes place. You won't be hearing tons of convo when the movie shows off its animation.

Now... both are good, there's nothing wrong with the dub.. but the original just added some kind of reality to the entire thing that it seemed a lot more effective with subtitles. Again, not that the dubbing was bad, but the original is best.

I can't stand japanese voices because I can't understand anything at all and it's hard to make out what they're exactly saying at which moment.
I can't stand japanese voices because I can't understand anything at all.
subtitles are pointless right?
subtitles are pointless right?
I think he meant that he can't understand which words they are saying at one specific moment. Like hearing, uh, 'blabalabala' and reading the translation which distracts him. Still that's a really weird thing to say. Edit: as in junker154 not you AK'z
subtitles are pointless right?
To me voices are a very important thing in movies, they add a lot to the atmosphere and dialogues. Subtitles show you what they're saying, still you don't know in which manner and how they express themselves because I am not familiar with japanese. It kind of ruins the movie for me. Like kimchimafia said.
Fair enough, but watching it dubbed in German would completely ruin the film lol
Everyone has a preference, but actually the german voices are really good in animes. I'm not a fan of anime at all but they usually have great dubbed voices. I don't mind it that much.
I think I'm gonna go for a dub. I remember being annoyed at missing out on a lot of awesome visuals in Confessions due to all the subtitles.
I think I'm gonna go for a dub. Confessions has a lot of dialogue. Plus Japanese is a very fast language. I mean I can still enjoy the movie, I would just enjoy it a bit more if I didn't have to read subtitles.
but you get cringey bad voices that dont fit the lip movement sub > dub easily
That's why I asked if the dub was any good.
dubs are never good
You should go backwards, i.e. newest to oldest. That way you won't slit your wrists at the end.
but wait doesn't that mean he'll start with slitting his wrists thus making him bleed out and miss the good stuff?
Countdown to Liquor Day - 8.5/10

Brave 5/10 I was diappointed with Brave. It felt like a movie that Disney or Dreakworks would make, not Pixar. The movie is best described as a mother/daughter drama. It didn't even feel like a lot happened in the movie, the main characters just messed around at the castle and in the forest. That was it.

So dub or subtitles?
considering my bias against asian VAs (except for russian VAs), i'd say go dub. it's not that i don't mind hearing japanese/chinese/taiwanese/korean, it's just i prefer it to be live actors instead of voice actors, whom constantly sound like they're stuffing squirrels up their asses. plus i prefer not to rely on subtitles, unless once again it's a live actor. this is why i love watching films like la vita e bella, nochnoi dozor and inglourious basterds. plus i've never really watched any ghibli film subbed except spirited away.
dubs are never good
Cowboy bebop has pretty good dubs actually
Cowboy bebop has pretty good dubs actually
I remember hearing the creator and the woman who did the soundtrack prefer the English dub.
Finally got to watching Bronson, 8/10 Really awesome acting from Hardy.
Resident Evil: Retribution I actually quite enjoyed it. Yeah the story is kinda dumb and some of the acting is naff, but it used a lot of practical effects and set pieces and was overall a decent action movie. The set up for the sequel is also pretty damn good. [editline]5th June 2013[/editline] Time to watch a proper movie though.
Porco Rosso - 9/10 Hayao Mayazaki's film that even though you look differant, you will always be the same. Heartwarming story (except the annoying girl sidekick). Michael Keaton does a good dub too, at least its way better than Streamline Dubbing. They use 20 year olds as the voice of old men
Just watched "A Bridge Too Far" again. Love the movie and has an awesome cast as well.
Iron Man 3 7/10 Pretty good movie, fun watch but nothing I'll remember for long.
After Earth Steaming pile of shit.
