Synecdoche, New York (2008); 9/10.
A near flawless film, the absurdity of it all, yet how heartfelt it is, especially as it reaches it's final moments. The ending really has stuck with me over the past day since I've watched it. It is without a doubt, one of Philip Seymour Hoffman's greatest performances and Charlie Kaufman's writing/directing is simply top notch. I'm sure it'll grow more on me with repeated viewings. This and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are probably my most favourite movies within the 2000's.
Godzilla - 7.5/10
Kick-Ass wasnt very good in this but I liked Breaking Bad guy.
Street Fighter
I honestly love this movie, it's so beautifully dumb and ridiculous and all of it is completely tongue in cheek. Everything Raul Julia as M. Bison says is pure gold, he honestly carries the movie. That's not to discredit Jean-Claude Van Damme though, he has some great lines as well, even if it is weird hearing his Belgian-ass accent coming out of the true American hero Guile.
It's nothing like the games, but damn if it doesn't make something really enjoyable out of itself.
Best Bison scene

Raul Julia was the best. It's a shame he died right after Street Fighter.

A teaser for Lost River (Ryan Gosling's writing/directorial debut) just went out yesterday. Looks like Harmony Korine meets Refn (although I always find it unfair to directly compare someone to another's work. I feel it demeans it as an original piece. But I'm a hypocrite I guess)
Interested at least. Looks beautiful and vibrant as expected since it's shot by Benoit Debie. It's strange and appears pretty surreal (Matt Smith said the script was Lynchian which was one of the reasons he picked it)
It's getting mixed/polarising reviews at Cannes where it premiered today but first look reviews are pretty worthless. Also polarising is interesting imo.
why not post it here?

Didn't notice that thread. I tend to just look at a few that I post in haha. Plus this thread has become basically a film discussion thread as well.
Godzilla
Kids in disaster movies / 10
It was a cool movie, could've skipped all the kid scenes though.
The only kid I didn't mind was Short Round. Kickass's son was a terrible actor.

Cannes' reactions are pretty much meaningless. I don't remember a year that wouldn't feature at least 5-6 movies at Cannes that wouldn't be "polarizing", constantly booed and wooed at the same time, called a "masterpiece" or "worst film ever".
Seriously, the mere fact that some film is premiering at Cannes means that it should be interesting watch. But the reviews are in no way any indicator of their quality.

For Your Eyes Only
2/5
Really boring, to be honest. Didn't like the Bond at the Winter Olympics theme during the beginning. Apart from hockey, I really don't like anything involving the Winter Olympics to begin with, so the beginning of the movie was almost unbearable.
Julian Glover was the villain. You know, the one bad guy in The Empire Strikes Back, and The Last Crusade, and the repulsive Maester Pycelle in Game of Thrones. It was supposed to be a surprise that he was the villain all along but given his acting history, it didn't work for me.
The only good part of this movie was the scenery of Greece. Now that looked very nice and held my attention.

Honestly the majority of Bond films are awful so I can't say this surprises me. There are a couple decent ones and even less great ones but overall it's terrible schlock imo.
Also I saw Godzilla. I had a lot of issues with it but there was some great stuff there too. I started writing a bigger post but I could tell I would go on for a while and it's getting late so I'm gonna finish it tomorrow. Probably the best blockbuster this year will have (far as I can remember it's the only one I've seen so far but hey they almost always suck so yeah) but that doesn't necessarily mean I think it's good as a film and not just a blockbuster.

Not to say Godzilla was terrible, but if I was to use one word it'd be "disappointed". So much squandered potential that was RIGHT THERE. :(
I have a soft spot for the movie Octopussy

Ok I saw Godzilla too yeah, and I don't quite think it's gonna be the best blockbuster this year.
This is just my opinion but Edge of Tomorrow and Guardians of the Galaxy look like they will deliver a lot more on the promises of their trailers, whereas Godzilla was considerably misleading. I liked Godzilla a lot, hell Godzilla is one of my favorite series ever, vs. Destoroyah is the shit and vs. King Ghidora is fucking amazing, but this movie was only like a 7.5 maybe an 8. I feel like if Edge of Tomorrow or GotG are as good as they look, they'll be around solid 8's and 8.5's.
Edge of Tomorrow has a bit of a soft spot in my heart since it's based on "All You Need Is Kill" which is a fucking amazing Light Novel/Manga. This movie NEEDS TO SUCCEED so that more movies can see there is potential in this type of movie. This is quite possibly the hypest I have ever been for a movie in a long, LONG LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG time. It looks like such an incredible movie, and it makes me so happy that this year could be the year for original ideas in hollywood. With Godzilla's flooring success and hopefully this succeeding, we can start getting competently filmed blockbusters. I'm being quite hopeful here, I think EoT will probably not do so great in the states and kill it in the other markets, but if it does good here AND there, i'll be so happy.
So yeah only a slight edge to those two, we haven't seen them yet or anything so who knows if they'll be worth a damn or what, i'm just being hopeful. I'd write a little paragraph about GotG but I feel like it's self-explanatory.

have you seen cap 2? even though you seem to hate superhero movies you might actually like that one
Grease - 8/10
It's a fun movie with good songs.

Clearly Godzilla isn't the best blockbuster of the year, we know this but we can still admit it was a enjoyable experience and worthy of a blockbuster title. But for the 'best blockbuster of 2014', we have to give the credit to Cap 2. Just the movie works as a summer flick, movies like TASM2 are NOT worthy of the title 'best blockbuster', and sorry to admit but despite how much I loved the new Godzilla, it can't achieve the 'best blockbuster'.
A good blockbuster has to come from a critical and and box office perspective (to most people, a box office perspective). Another movie that may be able to copy Cap 2's success would be the next X-Men. It's a possibility, but we'll have to wait and see. I was happy with what they did with the movie, there was finally less CGI and more practical effects, more developing story, more intensity, more thrilling. I want to see that in more movies
Either this is my true opinion that I realized Captain America 2 surpasses my favorite movie character, but that's okay. Best blockbuster of the summer overall goes to Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier in my opinion.
I'll agree to an extent for Cap 2. It was so much better than the first one it kind of redeemed the character for me and I loved Anthony Mackie. It also had a lot of interesting things going for it, a lot more than you would expect from a comic book movie. Marvel stuff has just been getting better, but I don't know if CA2 can be topped. I kind of forgot about it but remembered it again when you brought it back up. By no means is it forgettable, I just see a shitload of movies and they can sometimes blend into each other.
I'm hoping Planet of the Apes is super fuckin' good
I'm really hoping

I've not. And I don't hate superhero movies I JUSY think thebar for the marvel movies is set super low mostly due to blind fanboyism. Most of them are incredibly average but people are all like "OMG IRON MAN GODDAMN THOR!! 10/10!!" just ignoring flaws and deciding it's great cos we'll it's a marvel film it's gotta be great right?? (despite not having proven a standard that justifies them as great yet lol) I think they're crazy overhyped and so circlejerked. I like Iron Man 1 and the avengers was pretty good too bu Thor sucked and so did iron man 2 and The Hulk and capt America 1 was super average. Winter soldier is out of theatres now so I doubt I will ever watch it. Just not interested. I don't feel I can trust its praise since people said it about every one and they're all at best decent movies.

Also I love the xmen films I think xmen 2 is the best superhero film I've seen. I enjoy theraimi spiderman films (3 works as an absurdist comedy) and the Nolan films are good too (but a far cry from being the masterpieces people claim)
[editline]21st May 2014[/editline]
But like aside capt 2 what else is gonna challenge Godzilla lol the New transformers film? Which I will see cos Optimus Prime riding Grimlock wielding a big ass sword.
But guardians of the galaxy looks like it's trying to ve joss whedon but failing, I reckon it'll be a cringe-fest of awful humour. Edge of Tomorrow.. I've not seen much about it but from what I can tell I doubt it'll be anything but totally forgettable Tom cruise. I might see it if reviews are good I guess. Can't think of anything else?
fuck blockbusters
except Godzilla
Fuck Godzilla too cos it's all I've been thinking about since ice seen it and while there are several positive aspects there is an insanely large amount if issues and missed opportunities. The film is bullshit. I feel cheated.
ofc there were missed oppurtunities character-wise, but it's a monster film. At least it's better than Cloverfield and that's ok in my book.
Cloverfield was decent imo. Outside the first act we had no compelling characters...I really think it didn't so Godzilla justice at all. I'll get finishing my write up just now.
plus I actually ended up liking the overall vibe of the movie anyway, there was only one character who was underplayed and that ultimately brought the movie down (it wasn't Heisenberg) but in terms of flow and rigor I think it held its own.
It wasn't trying to be deep or end up being superficial, in a way it's like what Skyfall did to the bond franchise. It may not be the most compelling plot, but it did things the others didn't and aesthetically challenged others in the same genre.
i liked cloverfield
Even if your not interested mikey, your not giving Cap 2 a chance. Wait till its on dvd
captain america 2 was a good fun movie
art it ain't, but it's something enjoyable to relax to after a hard days work
