I always get confused if it's "Ipp Man" or "I.P. Man"
The World is Not Enough 4/5 Another solid Bond film, and this was the very first Bond movie I had ever seen. Desmond Llewelyn's goodbye was rather touching, giving that he died not long after this movie. Shame they didn't keep John Cleese as Q. I think he was a good replacement. Similarly, I wish Robbie Coltrane did another movie as Zukovsky. His character was a funny bit part in GoldenEye and at least this time he hung around for a couple of scenes. And now for (oh god) Die Another Day. Christ, the surfing has already begun.
people really liked this one? i thought tomorrow never dies was loads better than the world is not enough, though the garbage song was pretty damn good.
I always get confused if it's "Ipp Man" or "I.P. Man"
the first
Ip Man is a Chinese/Hong Kong film tho.
Wow, I'm terrible. It's still damn good.
Andy Serkis is becoming a bigger star. He's working on so many movies, I'm surprised he would be the one to both portray King Kong and Godzilla through mo-cap. Now he is a lead in Star Wars, we should thank Peter Jackson for casting him as Gollum in LotR. He wouldn't have achieved this much fame if Jackson didn't pick him.
The Dirties- 5/10 An interesting idea with a lot of weight, and several scenes of very good acting. I'd rate it higher if it wasn't found footage. Though it doesn't make sense near the beginning (are they just letting a student skip class all day every day to record these other students?), and I did appreciate that they acknowledged a character as holding the camera, it made less sense as it went on, to the point of nonsense. The "character" holding the camera suddenly disappears during some of the more tense scenes, instead opting for shot-reverseshot as if there's now two cameramen (were there? I have no idea). Very light spoilers, if you know anything about the film's story it's not really a spoiler:[sp]And a huge portion of the conflict is how one of two main characters deals with the other main character's decisions and decreasing sanity, but that holds less importance when the found footage suggests that there's an equally psychopathic character willing to film and edit the entire thing just off screen.[/sp] On top of that I don't feel like it added a whole lot to the bullying conversation, instead opting for things and ideas we've already seen and trying to make the punch happen in how the characters deal with it. I will give the movie props for tackling this subject, especially with the events of the past few years. However, it felt like the "punch" they tried to pack was more of a story element than an actual statement.
Lost in Translation 8.5/10 Can't believe I've never seen it before, thought it was great.
Robocop 2014 : 8/10 Not the same level of absurd violence as the original but a good movie nonetheless, was happily surprised by how it turned out. Samuel Jackson cursing his guts out at the end of the movie made it all worth it.
Heartbeats (Dir. Xavier Dolan, 2010)- 7.5/10 Watched this before Cry-baby which I've already written about but didn't write about this one. Young filmmaker Xavier Dolan's second feature film, made at the age of 20. (his first, I Killed My Mother, was made at 19- a fantastic film that I preferred to this one) It is more ambitious, but slightly less focused due to it. He's experimenting and doesn't exactly fail- the film is clearly more of a stylish, Nouvelle Vague piece of cinema rather than the slightly more straight forward I Killed My Mother (but his voice and style is there in his debut film, and at 19 that is just absolutely incredible). It's a great looking film with a really good story (a gay man, played by Dolan (who is himself gay and sexuality/identity seems to be a core aspect of all his films, however you definitely do not need to be LGBT+ to enjoy them), and his straight female friend both fall for a mutual friend, who leads both of them on, creating a love triangle and putting pressure on Dolan and his friend- but not so much the love interest) Worth a watch for sure, emotionally resonant, brilliantly acted and just superbly directed. A good choice for a different and stylish approach to romance. Dear Zachary (Dir. Kurt Kuenne, 2008)- 8/10 A very powerful, heartbreaking documentary, it's hard to explain without ruining it. The subtitle summarises it well, A Letter to a Son About His Father. The father, Andrew (titular Zachary being his child) was murdered by his girlfriend and this documentary is about Andrew as a person as well as the effect the death of Andrew has had on people that knew him, the on-going court case and events that followed. It takes twists and turns and is an absolutely masterful feat in editing. As the film goes on it becomes more and more like a genius crime-thriller... Only it's real. Truly heartbreaking and highly recommended. Laurence, Anyways (Dir. Xavier Dolan, 2012)- 9/10 Damn. This is Dolan's third film, as it's gone I've been watching them chronologically and considering he only has one more film out, Tom At The Farm, it's how I'm going to have to continue :v: (His latest, Mommy, just premiered at Cannes and won the Jury Prize- but it's not on wide release yet) and it is probably his best. At the young age of 22 at the time of this film Xavier Dolan has perfected and expanded upon the style he was going for in Heartbeats, he makes his most ambitious and fully realised film yet both as a storytelling and directorial effort. He is once again pulling far above his weight and creating art more fully his own than directors who have been making films for 10, 20 years. Drawing again from Nouvelle Vague, Terence Malick (but less airy and whispery :v:), and likely British drama, topped with deep exploration of sexuality and identity, he has created something that is, very much, Xavier Dolan. My only real complaint for this film is that, running at just under 3 hours, it is very long and despite the scale of the film it doesn't really need to be. It could use being a little shorter. Aside that, the film is outstanding. The film is the 10 year journey of a middle-aged man who decides to stop living and lie and begin living as who he was born to be- a woman. At first the film is about his struggle of acceptance overall, but as it goes on it becomes more intimate and more about acceptance from the love of his life, played by Suzanne Clément in a just truly outstanding performance (she won the Un Certain Regard- Best Actress award at Cannes and it is well justified). The writing is great and poignant, as well as personal but also philosophical. It really hits you hard. The photography is one of the best parts of the film as it's never anything short of absolutely stunning. It can't be captured in still images as the moving camera sells it so much more than any one frame could- the film is shot in 4:3 and Dolan clearly understands how to use this aspect ratio to his advantage as he makes it look incredible. The music as well is phenomenal, always striking a chord and working perfectly with the scene, be it score or a song being used in the film. There are some scenes in this film that are nothing short of perfect (including the amazing final scene which is a genius way to close the film- [sp]the penultimate scene being them leaving each other presumably forever as they realise they don't work, the final scene a flashback to when they first meet, back when Laurence is still living as a man, and the sparks fly.[/sp] Just outstanding. I was smiling and almost laughing, not because it's funny but because it was a perfect ending and I was reveling in how great everything about it was. Highly, highly recommended to anyone looking for an original personal drama that is sad, yes, but also fun and absolutely visually stunning. It's not difficult to watch but as it's almost 3 hours it's worth setting time aside for it to really get into it. Cannot wait to watch Tom At The Farm, which I'll probably do later tonight. [editline]29th May 2014[/editline] This is the face of the best director of the past 5 years. Ridiculous. Hes just a cute lil model-potential boy?? Picturing him bossing around all these people to create these meticulous films is a pretty crazy image. But massive props to him for making it so early and doing it so well, as of his first 3 films he's still a little indulgent (mostly because he edits most of his own films, I reckon) but I think it'll change with age and for all I know it maybe has. After all he's made two films more than I've seen.
Edge of Tomorrow - 7/10 enjoyed it and i dont even care, just like how i enjoyed Oblivion despite its shite story I dont know why Tom cruise is suddenly playing in these complex sci-fi wannabe movies for the mainstream audience but I love it. Theyre conceptual, have terrific effects and designs and have neat ideas in them. gimme more
dunno why you're acting like that's shameful, its been getting some very good reviews (unlike oblivion)
dunno why you're acting like that's shameful, its been getting some very good reviews (unlike oblivion)
I would honestly say that theyre both as good but thats my opinion eh
Yea I thought Oblivion was solid and it looked great
12 years a slave 8/10 That's a good story, really feel like watching Django Unchained again after that.

I haven't seen either Robocops but I feel like most of the hate toward it is from people who've seen the first and are just hating on the remake.
cloud atlas - 8/10 pretty underrated film imo (who went and saw this?). the film stretches over 6 vaguely interweaving stories, each interesting enough to be their own film. it has a bit of everything -period drama, thriller, offbeat comedy and some solid sci fi sequences. i can see why some people would be put off by the length, but i was never bored and cant see how the film could have been accomplished shorter. good performances all round and great fun spotting each actor playing different characters depending on the time period it was focusing on; i particularly enjoyed hugo weaving as a butch nurse ratched-esque character. check this one out if you have the time, it was much better than i anticipated. The Amazing Spiderman 2 It was alright. I didn't love it or dislike it, it was just alright. *spoilerz* [sp]why the fuck is harry osbourne this creepy emo teen motherfucker it's kinda awkward and dumb[/sp] [sp]i know gwen's death is inspired by the comic "the night gwen stacey died" but it was really unnecessary and stupid, sure it was an unusual plot twist but the kiddy / cartoony style of the entire movie doesn't contrast well with the super dark depressing comic ending at all.[/sp] i give it a :| out of 10 also i'd just like to add that i love how in the first "the amazing spiderman" [sp]peter parker gets bullied and shit but he's a super attractive guy that rides a skateboard, like what the fuck happened to the geeky average guy character that toby maguire played so well in the original movies[/sp] you can't beat toby maguire and james franco
[sp]also i know gwen's death is inspired by the comic "the night gwen stacey died" but it was really unnecessary and stupid, sure it was an unusual plot twist but the kiddy / cartoony style of the entire movie doesn't contrast well with the super dark depressing comic ending at all.[/sp]
My problem with that scene is that it went for dark and sad but came out more like in a funny way [sp]"Peter save me" "Okay" *Splat* "Gwen u ok" "OH NOOOOOOOO"[/sp]
My problem with that scene is that it went for dark and sad but came out more like in a funny way [sp]"Peter save me" "Okay" *Splat* "Gwen u ok" "OH NOOOOOOOO"[/sp]
really though like if you're gonna [sp]make the ENTIRE movie like old school spiderman cartoons where he saves the day no matter what then why did they add it, it was particularly irritating because it wasted valuable time where i could have been looking at emma stone's face for a little longer[/sp]
I haven't seen either Robocops but I feel like most of the hate toward it is from people who've seen the first and are just hating on the remake.
incorrect assumption meatbag the reason we don't like the reboot is because - they missed the point of what and who robocop is (your average jesus complex, it's really not that hard) - the studio clearly forced jose padhilla to not do whatever it was he had in mind - the overall villainy bit is awful, and nowhere near as awesome/crazy as clarence boddicker - the film is generally not memorable and would have been a wasted trip at the theaters
I heard that the dude who plays Robocop in the new one wasn't even supernaturally handsome like the dude who played Robocop in the old one.
Never saw Peter Weller as supernaturally handsome but he was definitely the much superior actor that's for sure. Weller's mouth gave out more genuine emotions than the new Robocop actor did in the entire movie.
Peter Weller has one of those ugly/handsome faces. Like Ron Perlman or Michael Shannon.
Yea I thought Oblivion was solid and it looked great
It was good, but no the 'memorable good' kind.
Overrated imo. It felt like a bunch of disconnected stories for the hell of it. I expected them to be pulled together in some meaningful way. Kind of felt like a movie that tried to be deep but didn't really have anything interesting to say.
i didnt see Cloud Atlas but I got the idea it was pretentious pseudo-intellectual "arthouse" trash and I mean The Wachowski siblings are quite bad like they literally have one movie worth anything (The Matrix) and Speed Racer was fucking abysmally horrific and Jupter Ascending looks equally trashy. It seems like a babby's first art-house film, and so exposed people who wouldnt normally see "different" stuff like it which I guess I commend it for, it's brave, but it still seems shitty and its 3 hours so I dont care enough to waste time on it to find out if im right or not lol

oh yeah i forgot about that-- just a memory lapse. my bad.
speed racer was the kind of movie i thought i'd enjoy if i didn't take it too seriously but nope, its shite no matter how you look at it
yeah i can see why people wouldnt like it, but for me it hit the right boxes
